Russia Won a Medal at the First London Design Biennale
The Russian pavilion was organized by the Moscow Design Museum with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Rostec
Russia was awarded one of the main prizes of the First London Design Biennale. The Russian exhibit received the Utopia Medal 2016 for the most complete development of the exhibition's theme: "Utopia by Design".
The London Biennale is the world's largest exhibition devoted to industrial design and new technologies. Participating are representatives from 37 countries from around the globe.
"I am very happy that our Russian designers received an award at this prestigious exhibition! I sincerely congratulate the participants on yet another international recognition, confirming the professional level of our design school rooted in a long tradition. We were once again convinced that design in Russia, including commercial design, has a big chance to become our most important competitive factor. Let me remind you that we have solid achievements in this field, for example, in light industry and automobile industry. Today it is important to transfer this experience to other sectors," said Gleb Nikitin, First Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation actively works on integrating design activities into production, starting with project design and ending with the final product release. Thus, the agency has developed mechanisms for supporting projects for the implementation of the results of intellectual project design activity into the industrial process. The Ministry also promotes the development of contacts between design schools and universities and industrial enterprises.
It is Russia's first participation in a high-class international professional event in the field of industrial design since the break-up of the USSR. With the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation and Rostec Corporation, the Moscow Design Museum presented the Russian pavilion with the project "Discovering Utopia: Lost Archives of Soviet Design.”
"In terms of industrial design, the Soviet Union did not lag behind the most developed industrial countries, and true masterpieces were created, which we have tried to show at the exhibition. After the break-up of the USSR, there was insufficient attention paid to industrial design in our country, which has resulted in no such phenomenon as industrial design in Russia today. A year ago, Rostec began its revival in Russia. The Institute of Technical Aesthetics VNIITE has been restored and "Design for Russian Technologies," the first open competition of industrial design in our country, was held under its aegis," said Vasily Brovko, Director of Communications and Strategic Research at Rostec. "Today, we produce products that are often superior to their foreign equivalents in quality, but lack in appearance and ergonomics. We are confident that through the development of industrial design, Russian industry will be on equal competitive footing in the mass consumption market along with the largest world producers.”
The exhibition of the Moscow Design Museum acquaints the Biennale’s visitors with unknown pages from Soviet design history. The exhibit reconstructs the system of data storage in Soviet research institutes, which for the first time show the unique archives of artist-designers of the 1960-80s from the collections of the Moscow Museum of Design. The exhibit is an installation, with lightboxes with digitized slide images that show implemented and unimplemented projects of designers, pictures from exhibitions and conferences held by VNIITE, working moments, and the best developments of Rostec Corporation. Specifically for the project, a documentary film was made which includes interviews with Russian designers, engineers from leading Soviet factories and historians of design.
The first London Design Biennale is being held at Somerset House on September 7-27, 2016. The Biennale is a prestigious international platform where the world's leading representatives in the field of design, innovation, and creative sphere will demonstrate exhibits on the topic of "Utopia by Design."
Somerset House is a former Royal Palace located on the banks of the River Thames in the heart of London. It is one of the most popular attractions of the capital of Great Britain. The exhibit will fully overtake Somerset House including the famous Fountains Court. The Biennale is held in cooperation with Somerset House and with the support of the Mayor of London.
