Russia to develop 5th-generation of Mi-28N attack helicopter by 2017 - News - Russia - The Voice of Russia: News, Breaking news, Politics, Economics, Business, Russia, International current events, Expert opinion, podcasts, Video

It could take Russia about three years to complete the development of a fifth-generation attack helicopter and start testing its prototype, a defense industry official said Wednesday.
The Mi-28NM, a modernized version of the Mi-28N Night Hunter attack helicopter that is being upgraded to standards of a fifth-generation aircraft, has been in development since 2008.
"I think we will need no more than three years to develop a new modernized version of the Mi-28N helicopter," said Andrei Shibitov, chief executive officer of the Russian Helicopters company.
Shibitov did not specify the characteristics of the future combat helicopter, but he was quoted earlier by the Russian media as saying that the criteria for a fifth-generation attack helicopter must include low radar signature, an extended flying range, an advanced weapons control system, the capability to combat fighter jets and have a speed of up to 600 kilometers (370 miles) per hour.

Re: Russia to develop 5th-generation of Mi-28N attack helicopter by 20

The reporters are confusing the deep upgrade program of Mi-28N to Mi-28NM for 5th Gen Program which is a different one.

5th Gen program envisages High Speed Helicopter program that final goal is to reach speed of 500 km/hr

The Russians are working in two step to reach that an intermeditate program called Rachel which attains a top speed of 380 km/hr and is a 10T class chopper and replacement for Mi-8/17 and final 450-500 km class chopper that still in R&D phase by Kamov and Mil.

There are talks of Military 5th Gen stealthy chopper program but its in early stage yet
More details on Rachel and pictures in link below

Russian Helicopters speeds progress of next generation

A flying testbed is being built around a Mil Mi-35 to validate systems that Petrov believes will translate into a 10t-class machine capable of carrying 21-24 people at a cruise speed of 195-205kt (360-380km/h). Comparatively, AgustaWestland's 30-passenger AW101 boasts a cruise speed of 150kt.

Critically, says Petrov, the aircraft must go into large-volume serial production, rather than exist as an expensive niche product. In addition to the basic -passenger transport model with convertible cabin suitable for offshore operations, Russian Helicopters envisions special variants for search and rescue, patrol and medevac missions.

RACHEL is being designed to replace the long-standing Mi-8/17 family, and sit alongside the heavier Mi-38.

It means stealthy, speedy (~500km/h), 360deg aware and network-centric helicopters with 20+km ranged GA smart weapons which are full air-combat capable by sensors and weapons both.

Excellent video of near first person view of a Mil-28N in combat by Iraqi pilots in their mission against ISIS in Mosul.
