Russia threatens to aim missiles at U.S. sites

The Associated Press | Wednesday Nov 23, 2011

MOSCOW — Russia will deploy new missiles aimed at U.S. missile defense sites in Europe if Washington goes ahead with the planned shield despite Russia’s concerns, President Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday.

Russia will station missiles in its westernmost Kaliningrad region and other areas if Russia and NATO fail to reach a deal on the U.S.-led missile defense plans, he said in a tough statement that seemed to be aimed at rallying domestic support.

Russia considers the plans for missile shields in Europe, including in Romania and Poland, a threat to its nuclear forces, but the Obama administration insists they are meant to fend off a potential threat from Iran.

Moscow has agreed to consider NATO’s proposal last fall to cooperate on the missile shield, but the talks have been deadlocked over how the system should operate. Russia has insisted the system should be run jointly, which NATO has rejected.

Medvedev also warned that Moscow may opt out of the New START arms control deal and halt other arms control talks if the U.S. proceeds. The Americans had hoped the treaty would stimulate progress on further ambitious arms control efforts, but such talks have stalled over tension on the missile plans.

“The United States and its NATO partners as of now aren’t going to take our concerns about the European missile defense into account,” a stern Medvedev said, adding that if the alliance continues to “stonewall” Russia, it will take retaliatory action.

The U.S. plan calls for placing land- and sea-based radars and interceptors in European locations over the next decade and upgrading them over time.

Medvedev warned that Russia will deploy short-range Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad, a Baltic Sea exclave bordering Poland, and place weapons in other areas in Russia’s west and south to target U.S. missile defense sites.

Medvedev added that prospective Russian strategic nuclear missiles will be fitted with systems that would allow them to penetrate prospective missile defenses.

He and other Russian leaders have made similar threats in the past, and the latest statement appears to be aimed at domestic audience ahead of Dec. 4 parliamentary elections.

Medvedev, who is set to step down to allow Prime Minister Vladimir Putin reclaim the presidency in March’s elections, leads the ruling United Russia party list in the parliamentary vote.

Iskanders are already at western border AFAIK.

This statement has more to do with domestic opinion buildup before elections.

It's time for Putin and Medvedev to stop fooling themselves. Europe and US are not their enemies. They're stuck in cold war hallucinations. And they think Russia is still the USSR.

If they are stuck in cold war hallucinations then what about NATO? What is the purpose of NATO ofter the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and the SU?

Russia seems to have realised that the west was slowly turning them into a boiling Frog.

Russia must understand that NATO does not anymore specifically target Russia (well let's face it Russia is not the USSR). NATO is still soul searching, but at the same time West is not too kin to dismantle their successful defence association. They know that there are security challenges ahead and that they are more effective unionised for the challenges than individually. However, Russia keeps on insisting that it be put by NATO in its cross hairs by provocative anti-West statements. Russia is actually begging to be considered important again by the West that's why it will resort to incendiary policies aimed squarely to get the West's attention. Attention Deficit Syndrome?

How can Russia be so sure of this when NATO spent trillions of dollars and decades to bring down the Soviet Union??

You mean NATO would again spend Trillions to kill something that is already dead? The NATO efforts were against the menacing USSR, which since 1991 is only a pigment of Putin's imagination. Russia is not the USSR. Simple.

Do you think they are satisfied with the break up of the SU?
If not for Russia's opposition all of Europe would have become Nato and their military would have been knocking at the doorstep of Russia from all sides.

Only a madman can entertain this kind of thought. Nobody will invade Russia, not even the USA. Especially not with the still potent nuclear first strike and second strike left-over capabilities of the USSR. Russia can suck its own oil to its hearts content and it won't be bothered by the West.

How can NATO further break up Russia? Russia is a solid geographic and political entity, it cannot be further broken down into smaller pieces. The USSR on the other hand was not a solid entity as it was not only composed of Russia.

What problem NATO has in running it jointly? Says everything about hostility on both the sides.

Please review again your history. USSR was not composed only of Russia. It was not called a "Union" (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics a.k.a. CCCP) for no reason at all.

Very easily use the broken parts against them that clearly seems to be the plan. Same pattern as India's partition and making India -Pakistan enemies.

Perhaps because Russia is well connected and the main supplier of arms to Iran, the country whom the anti-missile shield is being built for? A Russian access to the system will have the real danger of leakages into you know whom. Of course Russia by itself is not a threat to EU and the US, but its another story for Russian weapons clients. What do you think?
