Russia ready to negotiate with India on MiG-35 fighters

Russia is keen that India buys its MiG-35 fighter aircraft, a top Russian official said.

The Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG (RAC MiG) has proposed to India to consider the possibility of concluding a contract on the supply of the MiG-35 multipurpose fighter jet, RAC MiG Director General Sergei Korotkov told Itar-Tass in an interview.

"Despite the fact that we lost the tender for the supply of 126 multipurpose fighters to the Indian Air Force, the RAC MiG fulfilled all the requirements set the tender committee," Korotkov said. "The aircraft has demonstrated good results, sometimes even exceeding expectations."

According to him, the corporation hopes that "India will consider the possibility of concluding a contract on the supply of the MiG-35 fighters."

"And we will have the opportunity to implement it," he said. "Within this bundle of knowledge that India received during this tender, I would like the MiG-35 issue to be continued against the background of our common history and 50 years of partnership."

With their stooge in Italian waitress, they have to just threaten her of exposing her and they can sell whatever they want at whatever price they want. The Choppergate has gone cold. How & Why??. The russians got deals worth 3bn for three more krivek class, One more Akula class on Lease, more Mi-17s, more Su-30MKIs and now maybe this MIG-35 crap.
When choopergate broke out, I told you guys that this is russian game to send a clear notice to the Italian waitress to behave and keep the money pouring into russian armament industry else they will expose her and her family who have taken bribes in each and every deal till date.

Pls read my post properly. IAF does not want it but russians know how to force the hands of Italian waitress. Mark my words very soon you will hear that IAF has decided to buy 60-70 of them. Present Russian ambassador to India was a KGB agent in India in early eighties and was the conduit for bribes for the hubby of the Italian waitress. He came to India the day UPA-1 came to power. All intelligence agencies know the whole truth and so does indian media but no one will tell the truth.

April 11, 2013: After more than a year of haggling over the details, Russia has agreed to sell China 24 Su-35 fighters. The big obstacle to this sale was the Chinese inability to assure Russia that the new Russian technology in these aircraft would not be stolen by Chinese aviation firms. Apparently a mutually agreeable compromise was worked out.

At first China refused to buy Su-35 fighters from Russia if a "no unauthorized duplication" clause was included in the contract. The Chinese wanted to buy the Su-35s but were not willing to sign a binding agreement to not copy the Russian design. China is already producing unauthorized copies of the Russian Su-27, as the J11 and Russia is not happy with that at all. China has since designed a two-seat fighter bomber version (the J16), a stealthy version (J17), and obtained an aircraft carrier version of the Su-30 (the Su-33) from Ukraine and are producing a copy (as the J15).

China insists these are all Chinese designs that just happen to bear some resemblance to Russian fighters. In response Russia halted combat aircraft sales to China but still sold jet engines for these aircraft. So far, China has been unsuccessful in building copies of these engines. The engine sales are too lucrative to pass up, as they enable the Russian engine manufacturers to continue developing new designs. The Chinese plan to steal these as soon as they figure out how to handle the exotic manufacturing skills required to build these engines.

The Su-35 is a 34 ton fighter that is more maneuverable than the original, 33 ton, Su-27, and has much better electronics. It can cruise at above the speed of sound. It also costs at least fifty percent more than the Su-27. That would be some $60 million (for a barebones model), about what a top-of-the-line F-16 costs. The Su-27 was originally developed to match the F-15, which is larger than the single engine F-16. The larger size of the Su-27/35 allows designers to do a lot more with it in terms of modifications and enhancements.

The Su-35 has some stealth capabilities (or at least be less detectable to most fighter aircraft radars). Russia claims the Su-35 has a useful life of 6,000 flight hours and engines good for 4,000 hours. Russia promises world-class avionics, plus a very pilot-friendly cockpit. The use of many thrusters and fly-by-wire will produce an aircraft even more maneuverable than Su-30s (which were Su-27s tweaked to be extremely agile). The Su-35 was in development for two decades before it was declared ready for production in 2005. But even then there were problems with the new engines that gave it its superior performance. Russia says the engine problems are solved, but only time will tell if that is true.

The Su-35 is not meant to be a direct rival for the F-22 because the Russian aircraft is not nearly as stealthy. The Su-35 carries a 30mm autocannon (with 150 rounds) and up to eight tons of munitions, hanging from 12 hard points. This reduces stealthiness, which the F-22 and F-35 get around by using an internal bay for bombs and missiles. But if the maneuverability and advanced electronics of the proposed Su-35 live up to the promises, the aircraft would be more than a match for every fighter out there except the F-22. Since the Su-35 is to sell for well under $100 million each, there should be a lot of buyers.

Meanwhile, China has not had an easy time with its Su-27 clone, the J11. This aircraft entered service in 1998, but production was very slow and only a hundred were produced. It was during this process that the Chinese mastered many of the technical details of building and modifying the Russian aircraft. China then modified the Su-27 design and produced at least a hundred of the 33 ton J11A. This model was equipped with modern, Chinese made, electronics and is capable of hauling eight tons of radar guided air-to-air missiles and smart bombs. Then came the J11B, which was the same size and weight as the J11A but had a more capable AESA radar and is intended to specialize in air-to-ground missions, while also being able to take care of itself in air-to-air combat.

The Su-35 would give China a lot of ideas (and technology) for the J11C, no matter what promises were made to the Russians.

I agree that the most rational choice for IAF right now is adding more MKIs. The IAF should streamline their aircraft inventory, especially frontline, so that they can rationalize logistics and cut cost on things like pilot training, upgrades, etc. Buy 1,000 (scrap MMRCA) of those MKIs and invest on AESA. The IAF should however solve the lack of HMDs in their MKIs.

They offer crap weapon system which nobody is buying & we feel obliged for that pay heavily and also act as brand ambassdor for their product.

MKI doesn't have the penetration strike capability for IAF to do without Rafale. As demonstrated at Red Flag, it does poorly in defended air space lacking small RCS and stand-off weapons. Rafale can sit back and pop air defences at will or sneak in close enough to wipe out the most sophisticated systems. MKI can handle the current generation of PLAAF Flankers, but with Su-35 and J20s coming they need the low RCS and defence capability of Spectra to go head on with these platforms and not worry about attrition. AESA on an MKI isn't going to be particularly effective considering its massive RCS.

Mig is on a healthy road to recovery with $6 Billion Portfolio from Russian and Export customers , Mig is already working with Sukhoi on a UCAV program plus they are moving into development of transport aircraft as UAC chief Mikhail Pogosyn mentioned .......Mig is essentially a design bureau like Sukhoi is and all the aviation bureau has been absorbed under a single entity UAC that cross uses expertise from all design bureau.

MiG Still Hopes for Indian MiG-35 Order

Russia has approached India again with an offer for MiG-35 fighters. The move comes as negotiations drag on to finalize a contract for the Dassault Rafale, which was declared the winner of the medium multirole combat aircraft (MMRCA) competition in January last year. Explaining the move, Sergei Korotkov, general director at Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG (RAC MiG), told Russian media, "Although we lost the [MMRCA] tender, we nonetheless met all the requirements set by the tender committee." He noted that MiG has been a partner with the Indian aerospace industry and air force for 50 years; India signed for its first MiG-21 fighters in 1962.

Although RAC MiG has failed so far to clinch a firm domestic order for the MiG-35, Korotkov said that negotiations with the Russian MoD continue, with an award expected in this year's second half. Korotkov said that deliveries of the 24 MiG-29K/KUB carrier-capable fighters for the Russian navy will start later this year. For the first time in recent Russian procurement history, they will come equipped with foreign avionics, including Sagem navigation systems and Thales helmet-mounted sights. The Russian navy is the second customer for the ship-borne MiGs after India, which has already received 20 such aircraft out of 45 on order (worth nearly $2 billion), and expects four more later this year.

On April 20 the Indian defense ministry awarded RAC MiG a contract for training the Indian Navy Air Arm pilots in the MiG-29K/KUB. The 10-week syllabus will start shortly after the INS Vikramaditya resumes sea trials in the Arctic waters before delivery to India as planned later this year. RAC MiG specialists will also help to complete the special training facility for carrier fighter pilots being built in India.

The modernization of the Indian air force MiG-29 fleet is proceeding well. While Korotkov declined to reveal the costs, he commented, "What I can say is that it is much less expensive than the upgrade effort on the Mirage 2000Hs."

Three reworked aircraft were shipped last year and three more MiG-29UPGs are due this year. The maker has also begun delivering upgrade kits for performing the work at Indian bases. "We have not been simply selling our aircraft to India, but also transferring technologies, and these facilitate development of the respective industry in India, especially large industrial centers and maintenance enterprises. Our cooperation with India has been a success story and we expect this story to be continued with the MiG-35," the RAC MiG chief concluded.
