Riot police have again been deployed to the streets of London as violence broke out for a third day running.

Cars were set on fire in Lewisham and a bus and shop were set ablaze in Peckham. A large furniture shop in Croydon is also well alight.

In Hackney, police have sealed off part of Mare Street after youths smashed police car windows.

The trouble flared after a man was stopped in Hackney and searched by police but nothing was found.

There were also fears trouble may spread further afield as police in riot gear were deployed in Birmingham city centre after scores of youths rampaged through the shopping area, smashing windows.

The fresh violence prompted Acting Scotland Yard Commissioner Tim Godwin to called on parents to contact their children and urged the public to clear London's streets.

Up to 200 police officers in riot gear are in the Hackney area and are clashing with youths, who have tried to set fire to vehicles.

Groups of people began attacking the police in Hackney at about 16:20 BST, throwing rocks and a bin at officers.

Police cars were also smashed by youths armed with wooden poles and metal bars.

Looters also smashed their way into shops, including a JD Sports store, before being dispersed by police.

Planks of wood taken from a lorry were then hurled towards lines of riot officers.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a lane off Mare Street the wreckage of a burnt-out car still smoulders, surrounded by riot police.

At least for now, the violence in this half of London seems to have abated. I was talking to one young man who had received on his BlackBerry a list of places where he said there will be further trouble tonight.

He didn't tell me which places and stressed it is speculation. But he and a friend told me frustration with poverty in the area was boiling over.

On Mare Street there is the sound of crunching as police vans run over broken glass. Much of it from a bottle bank which was overturned providing makeshift missiles for rioters who lobbed the bottles at police.

Violence has broken out in Peckham, south London, where a shop and a bus have been set on fire.

In nearby Lewisham, a number of vehicles and a trail of bins on fire.

At least 215 people have been arrested and 25 charged following the riots across London over the last two days.

In Birmingham City Centre looters have attacked several shops, smashing windows and stealing items.

An eyewitness said windows have been smashed in McDonalds and Jessops near Birmingham Cathedral and a sign has been thrown through a gym window.

London's mayor Boris Johnson is cutting short his holiday to return to the city.

Home Secretary Theresa May also returned early from holiday, to meet Metropolitan Police (Met) chiefs to discuss their response to the violence.

Mrs May condemned the riots as "sheer criminality" and said those responsible would "face the consequences of their actions".

The fire quickly swept through the furniture store
The trouble follows two nights of violence over the weekend which started after police shot a man dead in Tottenham.

Mrs May said: "The riots in Tottenham on Saturday night and the subsequent disturbances in other parts of London are totally unacceptable."

A peaceful protest in Tottenham on Saturday over the fatal shooting by police of Mark Duggan, 29, was followed by violence which spread into Sunday.

A candlelit vigil was due to be held at The High Cross in Tottenham on Monday evening.

Met Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen Kavanagh said there were "significant resources" on the streets, with a third more officers on duty than on Sunday.

He said: "What we can see is that the Metropolitan Police are getting police officers there in numbers.

"When we have large numbers of criminals intent on that type of violence, we can only do that, get lots of officers there quickly and try to protect local businesses and local people."

He also admitted relations with the family of the man shot dead by police could have been handled better.

Mr Kavanagh said: "I want to apologise to the Duggan family because I think both the IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission) and the Metropolitan Police could have managed that family's needs more effectively."

Its not whole UK, its just one neighborhood where a black kid was killed by police and the protests turned ugly.

London bridge is burning all over again. However the riots have to do with economics and culture of britian which has degenerated, the bullying culture or hooliganism we see in football matches all shows how much spoilt the youngsters have become there.

Britian has 400% debt on GDP compared to 98% debt on GDP in US and yet BBC covers the debt crises closely in the US!! LMAO

Because its entertaining to watch the lecturers of 'civilized behaviour' to go on a rampage themselves.

    Insurance will cover the businesses.

It's not "whole UK", just a backwards district of London. But things are pretty bad. I'm surprised how the riot police isn't using tear-gas or water-cannon.

Gangs of masked youths have gathered in Birmingham city centre and some shop windows have been smashed.

A McDonald's restaurant, close to the city's cathedral, has had a window broken and eye witnesses have reported more damage in the Colmore Row area.

West Midlands Police said it was aware of some disorder, including vandalised shops and incidents of theft.

Nine people have been arrested, a spokesman said. Six of those arrested are juveniles.

Police said four people were arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, four for violent disorder and one for a breach of the peace.

    Riot gear

West Midlands Police Assistant Chief Constable Sharon Rowe said: "We will not tolerate mindless violence and damage anywhere in the West Midlands and are working to ensure that the offenders are identified and caught as soon as possible.

A window was broken at a McDonald's restaurant close to the cathedral
"Our communities have made it clear to us that they do not want this kind of violence in their city and we will continue to work with them to bring anybody who commits acts of crime or anti-social behaviour to justice as soon as possible."

Police said officers were controlling access on some of the routes into Birmingham. One eye witness said Broad Street, one of the main roads in the city centre, had been closed to traffic.

A heavy police presence has been seen in the city from late afternoon. Some shops in the city centre closed early amid rumours that trouble may break out.

An eyewitness said the window of Mills City Express store, in Colmore Row, was smashed by youths wielding a bin.

He said some then ran into the store before emerging with goods in their hands.

Vans of police in riot gear soon arrived and the youths dispersed.

Soon after, another group broke through the metal security shutter of the Jessops store in Temple Row and cameras and electrical equipment were taken from inside.

In New Street, a front window of the Adidas store was smashed and empty coat hangers littered the street outside.

Another eyewitness, Chris Scrivens, said youths were "running amok" in the grounds around the cathedral.

"I saw one guy put a window through of a shop. Another one picked up the debris.

"They were kicking over motorcycles," he said.

Police in riot gear were positioned in several parts of the city centre, with some advising onlookers to get off the streets.

Police have also asked people to think twice before calling emergency services with non-urgent calls as there is high demand for services.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was aware of incidents of disorder and was working with police and the NHS to make sure a normal 999 service continued.

It said so far, no-one had been taken to hospital.

Buses were not going into the city centre due to the disruption.
