NEW DELHI: The standoff in Parliament earlier this week may have forced Dharam Jagran Manch, an RSS affiliate, to postpone its 'ghar wapsi', or homecoming, programme in UP, but the project appears to be on in full earnest in Gujarat. Leaders of the Sangh offshoot VHP are focusing on Dawoodi Bohra Muslims, claiming the community, a sub-sect of Shias, was originally Brahmin that had converted under the force of the Islamic sword.

"Bohras were originally Brahmins and follow Hindu rituals and, in their homes, keep Lord Ganesha's idol," said one of the RSS functionaries who did not wish to be named. "Bohra Muslims are keen (to reconvert), it is their own attempt at ghar wapsi." According to VHP, thousands of Muslims in Gujarat embrace Hinduism every year without any coercion or allurement. "Every year 25,000-30,000 Muslims are returning home to Hinduism in Gujarat," said Ranchod Bharwad, VHP's general secretary in Gujarat.

Sangh's 'Ghar Wapsi' event in full swing in Gujarat"Patel, Desai, Bhat are all Hindu surnames, but some Muslims suffix it since their ancestors were Hindus. It is only in Gujarat that we have Noor Mohammed Desai, Ahmed Patel, MaqboolBhat. It is Christianity and Islam that forces or offer allurements to convert; for us, it is gharwapsi."

However, RSS pracharak in Gujarat, CB Upadhyaya, refused to comment on the matter. Mahipal Thakur of Dharam Jagran Manch said there was no immediate programme for the state, even as he added, "We will offer moral support to ghar wapsi. Bohra Muslims are enthusiastic about embracing Hinduism." Gujarat has 45-50 lakh Muslims out of a total population of around 6 crore, of which Dawoodi Bohra Muslims number about 10-12 lakh, and around 2-3 lakh live in Gujarat.

Rajkot:Continuing with its controversial 'ghar wapsi' campaign, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) claimed to have brought 80 Muslims, including sister of popular folk singer Farida Mir and her family members, back to the Hindu fold at a function on Sunday in Wadhvan in Surendranagar district.

VHP claims 'ghar wapsi' of 80 Muslims - The Times of India

Stepping up its ‘ghar wapsi’ campaign to mark its golden jubilee Saturday, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad “officially brought back to the Hindu fold” some 100 Christian tribals who had “embraced Hinduism earlier” in south Gujarat.

VHP conducts ‘ghar wapsi’ of 100 Christian tribals, later claims 900 reconverted | The Indian Express

Even as 'Ghar Wapsi', the Hindu right's agenda to get back Christians and Muslims into the fold of their 'original religion, gains momentum, it seems the Hindu groups have not restricted this 'programme' to just Hinduism and have extended it to Sikhism too.

According to an Indian Express report, RSS and other affiliated groups in Punjab, claimed to have converted over 8,000 Christians back to 'Sikhism' in the "last three years, some 3,500 of them over the last one year."

Dalit group working on ghar wapsi programme to restore lost pride of Hindus

NEW DELHI: Just when a resurgent Vishwa Hindu Parishad is hogging the headlines by reiterating that it is determined to bring Hindus who had converted to Islam back into the fold of their original religion, a Dalit group is working on another sort of ghar wapsi or homecoming programme with much less fanfare that could kick up a similar political storm.

Unlike the VHP's programme, this group's project does not threaten India's fragile religious harmony. But it could radically alter social equations within Hindus as it seeks to restore a Valmiki, a Khatik or a Charmakaar to their "original" surnames such as Mishra, Pandey, Tiwari, Tomar or a Rathod.

The group - led by led by Bizay Sonkar Shastri, a national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a former chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes - says it has taken it upon itself to restore the "lost pride" of the Hindus who volunteered to descend in the caste hierarchy rather than accept Islam during the time of Islamic invasion.

"We are talking about ghar wapsi for people who took to other religions because their ancestors were either forced to do so, or who thought they would get respect if they convert. What about those who did not convert but took up menial jobs just to save their religion? Is it not the right time to give them their place in society?" he asked.

Shastri said he has already addressed about 500 seminars to spread awareness on the issue and he has also held talks with the BJP's ideological mentor, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and other Hindu organisations. He added that he has lined up another 2,000 seminars across the country.

"We are planning to make this a people's movement and people will decide what our future course of action would be. But whatever we will do, will be done following the due course, as mentioned in our scriptures. And we are collecting data on that," he said.

Babri demolition was show of Hindu unity, don’t stop ghar wapsi: Adityanath to Govt | The Indian Express

Batting for the ‘ghar wapsi’ campaign of the RSS and its affiliates, BJP MP Yogi Adityanath on Sunday urged the Centre not to intervene “if Hindus who were forcibly converted want to become Hindus again”. He also called for “Hindu unity”, saying “one had measure of their unity in 1992 when they united and the Babri Masjid was demolished”.“Why don’t we care why Nalanda University was destroyed, and who destroyed it?

Giving the gathering the ‘mantra’ of “mala ke saath bhala” (pray and fight), he said: “If 15 lakh sants start visiting 6.23 lakh villages of the country, the handful of Christian priests and maulvis will not be able to convert Hindus.”
The West, he said, followed “Krishna’s philosophy of punishing devils even if they are your relatives” but Indians had become “soft” and followed “Christ’s philosophy of offering another cheek if slapped on one”.

The outfit claims that 80 Christian families and nearly half-a-dozen Muslim families in the district "have expressed wish to re-convert to Hinduism through ghar vapsi". "The VHP has made all necessary arrangements to facilitate their 'ghar wapsi' on February 5.

"Most of these families have already attended a 'yagna' -- Hindu ritual of sacrifice that involves the worship of deities, unity and charity. They have also decorated the walls of their houses with pictures of Hindu gods and goddesses and started wearing `Om' locket and saffron clothes and a sacred thread. They have also been given Tulsi water to drink and have taken Hindu vows. This completes their reconversion. The ghar wapsi' will be a mere formality," he claimed.

Another Bajrang Dal leader said, "Majority of the converted Hindus have been lured illegally to Christianity and Islam, particularly in 'bastis' (slums) through offer of money, education or health services."

    http://www.thehindu.com/news/nation...an-choose-caste-claims-vhp/article6701409.ece

“Caste matters little for us when the person is back in Hindu dharma. But if he or she wants a particular caste, it is made accessible to them”

Amid the ongoing controversy over ‘ghar vapsi,’ the Vishwa Hindu Parishad has claimed those who re-convert to Hinduism from Islam or Christianity will be allowed to choose a caste for themselves and will not be subject to unfair treatment.

Once a person returns to the Hindu fold, the VHP “investigates” the parampara (tradition), aastha (faith) and sanskriti (culture) of his or her ancestors.

Bhopal: A day after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat described India as a “Hindu rashtra”, senior VHP leader Praveen Togadia said efforts will be made to “increase” the percentage of Hindus in the country, but skirted the issue of religious conversion.

BS! Bohras don't keep any idol of Ganesh at home but do "worship" their own Syedna. Bohras are early converts from Brahmins, Kshatriyas. My lineage is probably Rajputs from the area I come from.

Bohras are again not a monolith. Depends who converted from which caste. I am sure even the "lower castes" so to speak converted. Anyone who says Bohras were converted by sword is on pure Afghan. Bohras are a docile lot bothered about their past & present Syednas,Business & Biryani 😂😂. So I was ROTFLMAO when I read converted by sword. But yes Bohras have been persecuted esp during Aurangzeb's rule where he executed the then Syedna in Ahmedabad.

Bohra culture is markedly diff from other sects. Can say there could he a run off of the Hindu past. The lineage of the Syednas go back to Rajputs as well. But not all of the stuff points to Hindu past. A lot has changed & Bohras have evolved entire own stuff.

The current Syedna (or one of the claimants whichever way one looks at) is very close to Modi.

Bohras again has split into Suleimani,Alavi & Dawoodi Bihras. DBs are the largest amongst them. There most probably will be another split pending court case within the DB community. I may add that VHP will not be able to convert any in Gujarat where things like money will not work as Bohras are pretty well off. They can try their luck in Madhya Pradesh. But Bohras have free meals etc going so don't think VHP will find any traction within Bohras by sops.

If they find people pissed off at the Syedna or something then well yes :)
