Raipur cops can sleep on job, hypnotised

The Raipur police has found a "cure" for its men being drunk on duty or overweight: hypnotism.

So, last Sunday, about 200 of them, diagnosed as either alcoholic, overweight or depressed, sat through a 30-minute session with a Jagdalpur-based hypnotist, Dr V L Soni, during which over 80 per cent reportedly "went into a trance".

Raipur SSP Dipanshu Kaabra was excited, as was city ASP Lal Umed Singh. "Doctor ne divya drishti dikhlayi (Doctor showed the divine vision). He says he will de-addict every participating policeman at the next session, and they will feel nauseous at the suggestion of alcohol or cigarette," said Singh.

According to officials, at least 40 policemen in Raipur were found to be alcoholics, 81 had high blood sugar, and 170 high blood pressure. Of the 1,815 policemen in the city, at least 53 weighed over 91 kg, with one weighing 121 kg. :heh:

"This is the result of their stressful lives. A special dietician is being hired," said Kaabra.

Soni, who claimed to be an 'Ayurveda Ratan' with a diploma in hypnotism from Indore, said: "We erase the required memories from a person's brain and then introduce fresh ideas, which last forever. I've cured over 30,000 alcoholics."

Soni also claimed to have been "restrained by the presence of women". "The next session in March will see the real impact of hypnotism."

Officials are planning to also use hypnotism for investigation. "We can use it to interrogate an accused," said Singh.

Not many policemen are as enamoured, with many leaving the hypnotism session before it began. Equally quietly, they are persuading colleagues to stay away from the "magician doctor".
