Rahul Gandhi, scion of Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, is the favourite choice to be the country's next Prime Minister, a CNN-IBN opinion poll showed on Monday.

Among his ruling Congress party colleagues, Gandhi is preferred by 42% of Indians to lead the country, according to the poll.

"No other Congress leader poses any challenge to him," said leading pollster Yogendra Yadav of the New Delhi-based Centre for the Study of Developing Societies which conducted the State of the Nation poll last month.

Some 34% felt Gandhi should become premier immediately, replacing Manmohan Singh, who has been painted by critics as a "lame duck" leader after failing to prevent a string of corruption scandals.

Just 22% of the 39,000 people polled in the national survey believed Singh, a Gandhi family loyalist widely seen as keeping the Prime Minister's seat warm for Rahul, should continue in the post.

Release of the poll follows a decision last week by Gandhi's mother, Sonia, to ask her son to help steer India's ruling party in her absence as she recovers from an operation.

Gandhi, 41, was named to a four-member panel to run the party's affairs while his mother, 64, who is Congress party president and seen as India's most powerful politician, recovers from surgery for an undisclosed condition.

Although long billed as a premier-in-waiting, Rahul has shunned high-profile cabinet berths in favour of grassroots activism promoting the interest of India's teeming poor and building up the party's youth wing.

The Gandhi family has dominated India's political scene for much of the period since the country's independence from Britain in 1947.

The poll, conducted for television networks CNN-IBN and CNBC-TV18, showed 54% believed Rahul was trustworthy and genuine in his concern for the poor.

Rahul Gandhi also won the poll when pitched against politicians from the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), scoring 19%.

Narendra Modi, the controversial BJP chief minister of Gujarat, was the nearest opposition leader, collecting 5%.

Modi is a divisive figure as he is accused of turning a blind eye to Hindu-Muslim riots in the state in 2002 that left some 2,000 people dead, mostly Muslims.

Looks like the days of 1960s are back, when Congress proudly claimed that even if it made a donkey to stand for election it will win! Shame on the people of India, Kongoress party surely will destroy India.

It seems some other media houses or *concerned citizens* should also conduct some polls about the next prime minister of India.

That's actually very much possible, only if the Election commission allows non humans to contest.

i hope this is the beginning of the end for the Congress......Seriously, he has no idea of any issues- just hear him talk, every time he opens his mouth, he just embarrases himself furhter....... for someone like that to be our PM....well.....!!!!
i just hope the next election results in an able administrator like Nitish Kumar becoming the PM- Modi would be ideal, but given our social fabric, ma not be palatable to the "secularists":mad2:

Nitish would make a fine PM. .
Only if Kaangrace weakens in AP because of the Telangana issue and BJP and allies gain ground. Orissa BJD should come back to NDA and there should be understanding between BJP and some other powerfull regionl party in UP.

So, its Baba Gandhi at the throne according to these news polls ! Well, Mom and Dad have mad a lot of money looting this nation and now he is dreaming about his turn, it seems. I hardly have any faith in all these polls whatsoever.

Perfect hack job done by CNN/IBN for Sonia Gandhi and INC. Timing is just perfect, when Sonia Gandhi is away and PM MMS with corruption blot.

We should change the national anthem to God Save India!!

No, it's not surprising this poll result. The opposition gas not done well enough on it's own waitin to piggy back on Annas and Babas. Opposition has no good "mass" leader at the national stage and Rahul has been able to make all the right publicity moves with a lot of Kala (vati;-) ).
Why blame the media or Rahul, it's the opposition that has to be blamed for not playing it's part properly. For jot being a house in order and not being true and honest themselves as we have seen in Karnataka.
media is TRP hungry. The opposition has not fed enough of that to the media while Rahul does esp with his yatras and eating with Dalits and eating with farmers etc etc. Consider it as reality TV. the one with best histrionics wins.

Who needs this genetically engineered double hybrid as PM. He looks so artificial just like a cheap actor of TV serial produced by Ekta kapoor. This fellow knows nothing despite getting personal coaching from scores of experts in language , culture, dressing, looks etc. etc. These bl**dy p*mp channels wants this chicken sh*t to lead 1.20 billion of Indian Republic!!! If he becomes PM , it will be a real shame and this can not be called democracy at least.

Democracy is not what a few people on a forum think. It's those among the 1.2 billion eligible to vote who make it. What the polls also show that the opposition has failed to do it's job. Imagine Modi was way behind at 5%!!! if we had a poll here he would make a whitewash. So what people on the forum think is not echoed by those in the real world.

I think that once he becomes PM new sops and schemes may be rolled out . There may be a complete Image makeover and he may be presented as another "visionary" just like that visionary PM of the late 80s.

India's only hope is that the opposition camp joins hands against a common adversary and prevent this country from becoming a fiefdom of the 70s.

The result of this TV poll is reflective of the current national mood,i fervently hope that key Congress functionaries, including such intellectuals like Digvijay Singh, make the right inference from this poll and decide to go for early election and try to cashin on this pro Rahul Gandhi wave.

You know what, this result can actually have a damaging effect on the congress. They might get complacent and get the rugged pulled under their legs like it happened to the BJP in 2004.
