HYDERABAD: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for joint development and production of the indigenous Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM).

The missile will be designed and developed by DRDO and will be manufactured by BDL, the ministry of defence nominated Production Agency, for supply to the Indian Army.

The MoU was signed by V. Udaya Bhaskar, CMD, BDL and Dr K. Jayaraman, director, DRDL on April 29 at DRDL. Directors and senior officials from BDL and DRDO were present on the occasion.

QRSAM has an advanced RF seeker with multiple target handling capability. It is canister launched and has a range up to 30 kms.

I don't see much difficulty in doing this since all the requirements at system level is already there. You have many suitable air surveillance radar and also multi mode radar in production. Astra MK-1 is almost done. Even indigenous RF seeker is coming soon. C2 is not even an issue. High mobility vehicles already there.

QR SAM project is more of integration challenge than technological. Five years at max.

Does the Astra BVRAAM have an Indian seeker, or a Russian one?

Dayum!!! That thing looks good. I mean really good. Finally, Indian MIC is coming of age. It is really heartwarming to see this. Let's hope DRDO, armed forces & MOD keep their respective sanity and induct the system before this decade ends.

DRDO Shows off Canister Launcher of QR-SAM hinting first trials later this year
    2-3 minutes
SOURCE: IDRW NEWS NETWORK / VIDEO COPYRIGHT NOOR ALAM

DRDO for the first time has showcased Canister Launcher for the Indigenously developed QR-SAM (Quick Reaction, Surface to Air Missile) at Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan and Expo held at Fergusson College grounds in Pune, Maharastra.

QR-SAM Canister Launcher consists of 6 launchers capable of firing any 6 QR-SAM missiles which are transported on Ashok Leyland Super Stallion 8×8 High Mobility Vehicle (HMV) Truck. QR-SAM (Quick Reaction, Surface to Air Missile) has been co-developed by BDL, BEL and DRDO with active Private sector participation.

QR-SAM weapon system is a quick reaction, all weather, Canister-based network-centric capable of search on the move, track on move and fire on short halts while engaging multiple targets at ranges of about 30 km with two vehicle configuration for Area Air Defence in Army/Air force Variant.

QR-SAM is similar to Astra BVRAAM in design characters but has bigger dimensions. unconfirmed reports also hint that a Naval variant of QR-SAM might also be developed to replace Israeli supplied Barak-1 in frontline warships in Indian Navy.

idrw.org in its earlier report (DRDO developed QR-SAM to be tested later this year) had said that QR-SAM likely to be tested after the second half of this year and DRDO has confirmed that System design has been completed and most of the sub-systems including X-Band Quad Transmit Receive Modules (QTRMs), Two Way Data Link (TWDL) onboard segment etc. are under realisation.

    Characteristics:

    Single and multiple engagement capabilities
    Unprecedented fire capability
    Strategic and high mobility
    Low manpower requirements
    High survivability against electronic countermeasures
Look down / shoot down capability
High-value asset defence, area and army defence, vital point and air base defence.

Damn detection range for 1m^2 target is 90km, this is indeed interesting development! 0.1m^2 targets at 60Km ... not bad at all, look who is threatening an F22 now :hehe:

It looks like it could be quad-packed for naval operations. If that is the case, then replacement of barak-1 & air defence of Kamorta class are two less thing to worry about.

Indeed, the silo assembly can be quad-packed, but the naval version can be used much as of like evolved-sea sparrow missile.
