Valson Taampu is the Principal of St Stephens. He is actually an Ordained minister of Church of North India i.e. A Christian priest. However, he tends to drop the 'Reverend' part of his name that all Priests use. Obviously, it is not that it is an embarrassment, it is just that it lets him merge into the Indian milieu as 'one of the many' i.e. an ordinary Indian with religious affiliation. Yet, he was recently in a huge row over the attempted conversion of St Stephen's administrative staff, Subhash Kumar Dash, and leading to the latter's suspension. Das had moved High Court challenging his suspension and accusing St Stephen’s principal Valson Thampu of trying to convert him to Christianity. Thampu astutely revoked the suspension order, issuing high moralistic rationalisation, possibly to avoid public scrutiny and interest that would have damaged the reputation of his Church. Now, he has made an interesting commentary. He does have a quaint terminology for conversion - head hunting.
