Protest over death of Indians in a hit-and-run case in Nepal
Kathmandu: Enraged over the death of six Indian vendors in a hit-and-run case, thousands of people shut down the main markets in the capital city today, demanding stern action against the culprits.
The protesters burnt tyres, blocked roads and gathered at the site of accident. Riot police has been deployed to prevent untoward situation.
The main markets of central Kathmandu, including Ason, Bhotahity, Indrachowk and Ratnapark, remained close.
Protestors accused authorities for not taking the accident seriously.
"We have approached the police and the Indian Embassy for help but no one has taken the accident seriously," Arun Gupta, one of the friends of the deceased, said.
However, the police said they were in touch with both the victims and the vehicle owners.
Although the main culprit, the driver of the vehicle, is not arrested yet, the Police has identified him and detained his family members, a police officer told reporters.
"We have been negotiating for necessary compensation and making arrangements for the treatment of the wounded," he added.
However, Indian embassy officials could not be contacted for comments.
Meanwhile Nepal today celebrated Janaipurnima, a festival of siblings in which girls tie thread around the wrist of their brothers asking them for protection.
