Chennai : Passengers of the Tiruchirapalli-Chennai Rockfort Express had a narrow escape when suspected pro-LTTE elements blasted railway tracks at Perani railway station in Villupuram district in the wee hours on Saturday. About three feet of tracks were blown off in the explosion when the train was coming towards the station at around 2:10 am. The station master cautioned the driver of the train, who applied emergency brakes averting a major train disaster, police and railway sources said.

Leaflets condemning the visit of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa were found from the spot, police said. Train traffic has been disrupted on the route following the explosion.

Most of the trains coming to Chennai from other parts have been stopped or diverted. A manhunt has been launched for the culprits.

Repairing work is on and the traffic is expected to be restored by 9 am, the officials said. Rockfort Express, Pearl City Express, Kanyakumari Express, Mumbai-Madurai Express and others have been stopped midway. Trains departing from here to Guruvayoor, Puducherry and other places were also delayed.

Police said a wire from the blast spot was leading to a nearby irrigation pumpset. Investigations were on to ascertain the nature of the blast and the device used in the explosion, they said.

Railway officials have restored the track and traffic has resumed after a gap of nearly six hours. Several trains to Chennai were running late by more than five hours. Police said a team has been formed to nab the persons involved in the incident.

LTTE should be wiped if they try to do any mischief in Tamil Nadu. By what mean they are attempting to kill the tamil people.

Along with the LTTE, their supporters in india like the PMK chief vaiko should be also put in his place. He borders on being anti national in his support for tamil cause.

Highly doubt. The maoists don't have any presence there.

If it was a maoist attack they would claim it to show the GoI that their presence and reach has expanded.

Vaiko, and His ilk should be arrested with immediate effect under the most stringent of laws. They are a threat to National Security. The LTTE doesnt have a presence in TN I feel, just supporters, who follow Idiots Like Vaiko and Gang blindly. This is my personal view

And another Indian state will not be doing anything about this because of their perceive thinking that ltte has its local people support their. Also there is elections in GOING TO BE HELD IN Tamil Nadu so we can see cause for Tamil rising on both sides from DMK as well as AIADMK.for last years DMK did n`t cried for tamil cause and suddenly we see their demand for fair settlement of Tamils in Srilanka

Its all playtime in the election period. If there is no election there will be nothing. I dont care of the Tamil rising rather it is a vote bank technic.

@ahmed, vaiko was arrested under pota and was in jail for more than 20 months. Simply it is all blood money thats revolving around. LTTE is also zero in TN, the members who are paid to shout are them are shouting freely because there is not POTA

Get this LTTE shit out of here please. The Government should come down hard on this bullshit.

The nonsense is exacerbated by the lack of a definition and transparency on the issue. Even now they're trying to please all sides. With the result that hardcore Tamil civilians are beginning to think the mantle of war has befallen them.

On the other hand, there is no visible fructifying of their pressing Sri Lanka to begin the process of national reconciliation. If there is, it's taking too long and far too slow. If SriLanka is loathe to accept an int'l committee to investigate "human rights violations", the government can seek political leverage out of proposing an investigation committee of its own. Go to the North, assess the situation and prepare a report that diplomatically abridges Tamil desire to seek peace for their brethren and Sri Lanka's want to save face, with the warning that more must be done and promises of aid if it is.

The LTTE is, was, by far, the most deadly insurgent organization in the world. You do not want them in your backyard. The only way you will preempt such a thing is by changing the minds and views of the people. Because the DMK, democratically elected, conforms to the aspirations of the people. And the DMK will continue to pussy-foot as long as it has a significant theatre that is pro-LTTE.

In contrast, the rout of the pro-LTTE parties in the 2009 Tamil Nadu elections serves as a reminder that the vast majority of Nadu's population is not pro-LTTE. They need to make this known from the grass roots up. Not every five years in elections to the state Assembly, but frequently, every other day through the media, articles in print and organizational influences. Learning by rote for the politicians.

In the meantime, the Congress needs to crack the 'party whip'. Bring everyone on board in the alliance onto a common theme for the LTTE, with the whip being Cabinet seats, motion proceedings, etc. Play politics smart. And put a goddamn man with a clear vision on the issue in charge of it fir chrissakes.

People of TN have clearly proven that they wont be influenced by SL tamil emotion card from the last lok sabha elections. MDMK won only 1 parliamentary seat. All vaiko's antics never earned him a seat. I don't think it will be any different for assembly elections either. For people of TN its always been choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea (place dmk and aiadmk anywhere). There is no 3rd party who is significant. Though the demand for settlement of tamils in lanka is legitimate, everyone knows that it cannot be achieved by DMK or AIADMK.

As far as vaiko is concerned, IB will be closely watching him. Let him be crushed democratically.
