Two days ahead of the by-election to Jangipur Lok Sabhaconstituency, Abhijit Mukherjee, son of President Pranab Mukherjee, was on Monday optimistic of a smooth sailing even as CPI(M) accused the Congress of trying to resort to 'fear tactics'. “I am confident of a smooth win and I have been receiving positive and encouraging response,†Mukherjee said. To a question, he said he had noted that the voters had expectations from him which was 'very natural' as they had thesame from his father who had won the seat in 2004 and in 2009. The bypoll was necessitated due to resignation by Pranab Mukjerjee who contested the Presidential election. Despite severing of ties with Congress after withdrawal of support to UPA government at the Centre, Trinamool Congress has not put up any candidate against Mukherjee as a political gesture. Mukherjee is pitted against Muzaffar Hussain (CPI-M) and Sudhangshu Biswas (BJP) in a multi-corner contest in the border district of Murshidabad district which has a sizeable minority population. CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bosehas accused Congress of trying tocreate an atmosphere of fear by resorting to violence and fear among Opposition parties.
