President defends mercy spree to death row convicts

    She is indeed a kind hearted lady.

    She gave clemency even to the dead.

    And she never acted in haste or played to the gallery and the clemency petitions had been commuted only after due examination.

    However, good that she has done her time in the confines of the Viceregal Palace and roamed the world as if it were her own.

    Goodbye!

    We will not miss you!

    I would guess that the clemency may have legal implications for his family even after his death. I certainly don't know anything about Indian law, however.

    I read somewhere that

    a) the Presidents office clarified that the pardons were based on Chidambaram's recommendation as Home Minister

    and b) this is a prelude to abolishing the death penalty so Afzal Guru and Kasab can be pardoned ultimately :) .
