Praful Patel questioned at Chicago airport

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel faced some uncomfortable moments at the O’Hare airport in Chicago when he was quizzed by the U.S. immigration authorities after his name and date of birth matched with that of another person reportedly on America’s watch-list.

Mr. Patel, who was in Chicago on a private visit, flew to Montreal for attending an official engagement.

Seeking to downplay the incident, Mr. Patel said “I am in Montreal and nothing serious has happened... there is a person with similar name and birth date. That’s why they just double checked.”

Mr. Patel was questioned by the immigration officials after his name matched with that of another Praful Patel, who is reportedly on U.S.’ watch list.

The Minister was asked why he was visiting the U.S. and whether he had stayed in the country earlier.

US apologises to Praful Patel for detaining him at Chicago airport

New Delhi, Sep 29 : The United States has apologised to Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel for detaining and grilling him at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago airport.US Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, said the US will do whatever was required to make necessary amends to prevent any such incidents in future.

Praful Patel, who was on an official trip to attend the International Air Transport Association (IATA) annual general meeting at Montreal in Canada, was quizzed after some confusion over his identity.

He was travelling on a regular passport instead of the diplomatic one used by ministers.

The matter was later resolved after the Indian Embassy officials intervened, sources said.

Reacting to the incident, Praful Patel tried to downplay the embarrassment caused to him at the Chicago airport.

"Nothing serious has happened. There is a person with similar name and birth date. That is why they just double checked," he said

This is not the first such situation for the Minister - he landed in a similar situation earlier in New York.

I cant get the big deal there?

There was a confusion of duel identity and this chap was quizzed and I am sure immediately the Indian embassy would have swung into action, there is absolutely no mention about the time period he was detailed for could have been just for a couple of minutes, this chap’s first lap of the visit was a private visit not technically representing india above all Americans do take their security very seriously unlike us where we have some sort of a special rule for everyone who is some sort of IP and beyond and just by introducing themselves they are allowed to barge in without any checks, and for these few jokers the law gets specially made and then enacted that they can by-pass rules at their free will.

It happens in countries like ours where non-entities like Robert vadra’s are allowed to move around without any security checks, IMO other than the president and the PM of the country no one else needs to be made any sort of exceptions and also no exceptions be made for ex-presidents and ex-PMs, they all need to be treated like any other ordinary Indian.

next time praful patel is in an indian airport and needs to be quizzed he better be!
