OKARA: While Imran Khan is drawing huge crowds on his campaign trail, a senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) predicts that his party and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) could form the next coalition government at the centre. He also foresees the PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz as coalition partners in Punjab.

"The PPP could also offer Imran Khan the office of prime minister in the coalition government," Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, the president of PPP's central Punjab chapter, told The Express Tribune in a candid interview on Sunday in Okara where he was on a campaign trail. Wattoo is contesting the May 11 elections from three constituencies: NA-147, NA-148 and PP-188.

"If Imran Khan plays his cards carefully, his party can bag more seats than PML-N in the centre," he said. Manzoor Wattoo, whose party successfully completed its five-year constitutional term in office, predicted a 'hung Parliament' as a result of the upcoming election. He believes no political party could win a simple majority, either in the centre or in the province

"If the PPP outvotes its rivals [in the centre], we'll invite the PTI to form a coalition government," he added. "If the PPP can join hands with the ANP, JUI-F and MQM, it can also form a coalition with Imran Khan," he said referring to the last coalition government that his party led for five years. He added that President Asif Ali Zardari believed in political reconciliation.

@farhan_9909, what happen to IK and his party. Leave aside dreams of becoming PM he could not get more than 30 seats, lesser than even the PPP who was supposed to have been wiped out as compared to the so called wave in Imran Khan's favour.

Here our media especially the likes of NDTV and CNN-IBN were routing for him till the last moment. His speech from the hospital was being presented as a game changer by our media.

I have started to form an opinion, the more vocal, urban middle class on the internet has as little a say as possible in running the affairs of the country, voting etc, the reason I sense a party like the congress would not any more be concerned of what the chatter is online.

As far as the PTI is concerned, if they have not even managed a 2nd position in the number of seats then that indeed is a shame, especially when the PPP was being put across as a complete failure, by that account, and the PPP beating the PTI in the number of seats, what that makes the PTI as!

At best, the PTI, just like the PPP and to a limited extent, liike the PML (N) is a regional party of pushtoons, and an alternative to the ANP, far from being a national party.

My 2 'lowest denomination of your respective currency'

PTI has arrived. Try putting a value to becoming a 'third' prominent party in a major democracy - US, India, any major state in Europe, South America - fail fail fail. With the seats he won, he will raise funding and probably win in 5 years time - if pakistan lasts that long (and if it does then if nawaz lives that long)

@thakur_ritesh,

Politics is majorly about mobilising dedicated cadre. PTI did not have the cadre, they just had young educated Pakistanis rooting for it. These pampered kids will never come out and canvass for the party or do booth management.
