Massive power failure in northern India; 8 states affected - Indian Express
Eight states have been affected since late Sunday night due to major power supply failure in the Northern Power Grid.

The affected states include Delhi and Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan. There will be no Metro train services till power supply is restored.

The northern grid collapsed at 2.30 am. According to reports, it might take four to five hours for the whole system to come back to normal.

No metro services in Delhi

Services on all six lines of Delhi Metro were affected today due to a major failure in the Northern Grid that supplies power to the modern transport system.

No trains were available on any of the six lines on the network from 6 am, when the metro network resumes services after a few hours of break.

A Metro spokesman said the services would be fully restored only after the power supply resumes.
(Conspiracy theory: It was a cyber attack)

Power restored in my area :yey: Metro has resumed

Firstpost - » Power crisis Live: 40% power restored across North India

10.07am: Power is being slowly restored across North India, but officials estimate that the situation will only fully return to normal by evening. Union power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said about 40 percent power had been restored, including to emergency services.

Commuters in Delhi are still facing problems, since a majority of the traffic lights are still not functional. However the Delhi metro is now almost back to normal, as it is receiving hydel power from Bhutan.

9.58am: Services on all six lines of the Delhi Metro resumed by 8.45am after almost three hours of disruptio

solar storms or pole shift could be likely causes
It is reported that the problem started from Aligarh. It seems the same old story States drawing much more than their allocated share and this results in the Frequency dipping to dangerous levels, which may have led to the collapse. However investigations are on.

Even if it tripped, why did it take so long to restore the services?
How will they manage in case of War?

Further to the grid failure, the MD of UP Power Corporation has been transfered. Details have yet to come out, but with the fingre of suspicion pointing to UP overdrawing from the Grid, leading to the grid tripping.

The situation is quite serious with no discipline being observed by the states in the Northern Grid

National Regional Load Dispatch Centre (NRLDC), New Delhi.

According to the NRLDC website, the frequency in the Northern Regional Grid fell to 48.88 Hz as of 10.30 am and at 11 am was at 49.68 Hz. The frequency has stabilized because power is in the process of being restored and other regions are providing power to the Northern Grid, according to a flash report released at 6.30 am by NRLDC.

between 1 January 2012 and 25 March 2012, states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir drew excessive power when the grid frequency was below the permitted 49.5 Hz. There were 63 instances when the frequency of the Northern Grid was below the permitted 49.5 Hz. NRLDC issues 319 warning messages to these states between 1 January 2012 and 25 March 2012. Most of them were to Haryana, Rajasthan, J&K, UP and Punjab.

Despite these warnings, excessive withdrawal continued between 1 May 2012 and 14 May 2012. For example, UP consumed 1700 MW power daily when it is supposed to draw only 1200 MW. Rajasthan consumed 1200 MW when it is supposed to draw 500 MW power. Similarly states like Haryana and Uttarkhand continued to draw excessive power in May 2012.
Source : Did overdrawing by states cause northern power grid failure?

If this is the kind of overdrawing by the various states then we could be seeing more of such collapse in the Grid.
