Possible sale of ALH Dhruv to Afghanistan | idrw.org

As soon as the Taliban bullet struck 24-year-old Afghan Sgt. Nazir Moradi's leg, the men in his unit began brainstorming a way to get him off the battlefield. The roads were too dangerous for an army ambulance. The Afghan soldiers, in several calls to their commanders, repeated one plea: They needed a helicopter.

Lack of helicopters and United States moving their assets out of the country is hampering military operations in Afghanistan, Afghan forces operate hand full of Russian built Mi series helicopters but helicopters are always in shortage.

According to sources close to idrw.org, there is possibility of India offering Dhruv helicopters to Afghanistan; HAL is already working on order for Cheetal helicopter against an order of three Cheetals for Afghanistan Government.

Sources also mentioned that Afghan officials in past have inquired about Helicopters which India can provide, Dhruv ALH is already serving in Indian army it is operated in difficult terrain in Himalayas and will be able to handle extreme afghan terrain , Afghans are asking for Indian help in training their crew to maintain Russian built Mi series helicopters .There is no exact number of Helicopters which Afghanistan wants from India or will India finally move away from Red tape and offer ALH Dhruv or even armed variant ALH Rudra.

If we supply them Dhruvs, how long till its in the hands of taliban?
better to supply them cheetals.
plus the first 20 or so Rudras which were to be inducted in IA this year, what's the progress in that? IA has only 2 rudras.
the large orders of IA and IAF should be 1st priority.
IDRW news network always prints speculations not facts. :tsk:

To be fair, the people at the helm of the govt. And indeed those who head the mid to upper levels of the the services are former commanders of the Northern Alliance and harbour a lot of mistrust, if not outright hate, for the Taliban.

If the situation does deteriorate again as after the withdrawl of USR, the units originally belonging to NA will scurry back to their safe havens, i.e, the northern part of Afg, and will take all the assets they can with them, destroying the rest.

And please do consider that the NA and indeed local people are deeply grateful to INDIA for the medical, food (and who knows what) support RAW and Army medical corps provided to the NA in support of NA, not to mention developmental activities we've carried out

Afganistan may be a country now but the true allegiance of the people and the fighting units lie with the local warlords first, many of whom now occupy the top posts in the establishment. This is why this country is so hard to control, it has nearly no centre of power.

India must help Afghanistan otherwise once NATO coalition forces leave Afghanistan it will be captured again by Taliban with obvious help from Pakistan ISI and anti-india militants. :gun: :shoot:

Afghanistan is going to get 3 helicopters between March and May' 2014.

It is reliably learnt the three choppers are being configured and constructed as per Afghan request at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bangalore. While the Afghanistan government was keen on Russian-made helicopters, it seems that New Delhi managed to convince them to take indigenously-built equipment.

No need for soft loan. Do what the Russians did. Get your cheques from the US:thumb:

It all depends on what the next president does come April. We don't need advanced and overpriced machines for now, just ones to transport and shoot Talibs. The Cheetahs are probably there for the pilots to gain experience with Indian systems in case of future procurement (my guess).

India to provide helicopters to Afghanistan soon: Salman Khurshid | NDTV.com

On board special aircraft: India will provide helicopters to war-torn Afghanistan "very soon", External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said today, months after President Hamid Karzai sought lethal weapons from the country.

"We are giving them helicopters and we will be supplying them very soon," Mr Khurshid told reporters who accompanied him on a day-long visit to Kandahar, where he inaugurated an agricultural university built with Indian aid.

"We have also been giving them some logistical support and we hopefully will be able to upgrade and refurbish their transport aircraft," he said.

Mr Khurshid did not specify the number or type of helicopters to be provided to Afghanistan.

Mr Karzai had sought military aid and equipment from India during a visit to New Delhi in December.

"Afghanistan is very special and uptil now wherever they felt they need (something), we have been giving them," Mr Khurshid said.

"I think it is consistent with our approach - building capacity, providing training. That seems to be going well. Ultimately it is what we mutually agree and is within our capacity to supply."

India is "not reluctant" about assisting Afghanistan as it has a very clear policy the world over to build capacity, Mr Khurshid said.

"We are not in the game of giving people large scale equipment which is lethal and so on," he said.

Earlier in Kandahar, Mr Karzai told journalists from India he was not dissatisfied with India's response to his request to supply military equipment to strengthen Afghan security forces.

"I am not disappointed. I am rather happy and grateful to India for its assistance," he said. "India's response has been good."

Mr Khurshid, speaking after he jointly inaugurated the Afghan National Agricultural Sciences and Technology University (ANASTU) in Kandahar with Karzai, said India will continue to assist the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).

The ANSF will play an important role in "this year of political and security transition" and the world community must fulfill its pledges to rebuild the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police, he said.

Afghanistan is set to hold presidential polls on April 5 ahead of the US troop drawdown later this year.
