Mumbai: Several people are said to be trapped after a portion of the monorail section collapsed at Shanti Nagar in Mumbai's Wadala area.

According to initial reports, eight people have been injured in the incident and have been rushed to nearby hospitals

Initial reports had suggested that a portion of the monorail section, which is next to the flyover, had collapsed. However, officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the city's planning body, later clarified that it was actually a part of Eastern Expressway flyover, connecting south and Navi Mumbai. "Action against the contractor will be swift and harsh if there is any lacunae," said MMRDA Chairman Rahul Asthana.
