There is much to say of the current Pope.

He is man with clarity and reason.

He is not bogged down by mediaeval religious dogmas and does not carry such baggage in his vision and advice to the flock.

No religion is worth following if it does not keep pace with changing reality & contemporary proven facts.
The present Pope in this regard surely is a " Tope" ( as in Cannon)

    @Ray

    But would he later recant?

If Evolution is given credence, then Adam & Eve is not true.

If Adam and Eve is not true, then there is no original sin.

If there is no original sin, then what is life of penance for?

Life would become difficult for evangelists and missionaries.

However, if the Pope does not recant, he would be celebrated as probably the most progressive, reformist and non-dogmatic Pope in the history of Christianity.

Symbolism is in every religion to portray an idea.

One has to shift the symbolism and words for the social message that it underlines.

He has proved that the Pope is not really infallible by the very fact that he is freeing the Catholic Church from the Dogmas that contributed to the Infallibility of the Pope.

Let us look at the good side of the person.

He could have enjoyed the perks and privileges and the Papal opulence, but he is not doing so. He does not live in the Papal Mansion, but in another house with frugal comforts.

The idea that Creation and Darwin's Theory had to be mutually exclusive has been one of the biggest false dichotomies foisted on human dialogue ever. That argument has entertained pinheads for generations.

Evangelists are Protestant. Although, some Protestants accept the Pope as the leader of Christianity.

Roman Catholic church has never had serious issues with the Big Bang theory or evolution. If this is news, it's that the Roman church has moved from; maybe, but who cares? to probably, but who cares? to now being: OK sure, but who cares?

Pretty sure no Pope has ever said that the Old Testament's 7 days= 7 periods each 24 hours long,

Big bang was supported by the church as being proof their creation-out-of-nothing as given in Gen 1.1. Nothing new.

As for evolution, what does it matter if he accepts it or not?
