For a political party facing a economy in a downward spiral, a opposition party baying for their blood and series of scams being exposed, silence from their top two leaders has lead them to a very sticky situation.

In recent days we have seen a new side of Sonia Gandhi trying to be more assertive and combative, but will this work for the party, which today is grappling with a leadership crisis. They have elevated their chief trouble shooter to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, and are sorely missing his skills.

First Post has an interesting analysis of the recent change in the way Sonia Gandhi is leading her party, which is under siege today.

From the same article we see the kind of perverse use of religion by the ruling elite. Another Congress leader, the Late Rajiv Gandhi also flirted with using religion, first the shilanyas, then the Shah Bano case.

Sob I think elevating Pranab is the biggest self-goal she did.The man is in a position to dictate terms to Congress, has a tendency to be independent and now he is as free as a bird. There are not many in Congress who practise statecraft like him

Agree, Pranab Mukherji is one of the last of the old guard Congressis who are expert in politics. Another master of politics was the great PVN Rao. Also, with Pranab babu out of the hurly burly, the mantle of leading the flock falls on the shoulders of Sonia Gandhi.

There is today a crisis of leadership in the Congress. For decades the GOP never build/ allowed second rung leaders to come up, as they were perceived a threat to the Gandhi family.

Today people like Mr.Sibal, Mr.Ashwani Kumar, Mr.Chidambaram, Mr.Vylvar Ravi, Mr.Manish Tiwari, Mr.Janardhan Reddy, Mr.Ahmad Patel and their likes do not have any political base. They are political lightweights and except for giving sound bytes on TV studios they have no other value for the party in election time. Rahul Gandhi has not been able t transform himself from an object of curiosity to a vote catcher. Priyanka Vadra remains an unknown but comes in a package deal with Robert Vadra.

So far apart from egging on her MPs to take on the opposition Sonia Gandhi has not shown any master plan for reviving the sagging fortunes of her party.

Priyanka has taken part in campaigning in UP election. Congress might have to reveal her sooner than later as crown prince has been turned in to a clown prince and it seems he lack the qualities of being a leader let alone a good leader.

come 2014 and you might see 3 person in charge of congress.

The Indhir era of charisma is over.Pritanka took part in the campaign in Rae Bareli and Amethi but the two boroughs did not yield much seats for the congress

Seats doesn't matters for congress. Rahul spent almost 2 years in UP result? tally down from previous count. In Bihar he campaigned result? 4-5 seats..

they have got others to take blame for their failures. Let them win once. It will be deemed as Gandhi Family charisma..

The BJP has a problem of plenty. IMO the biggest problem at this moment is LKA himself. He should step aside formally from the leadership race and should act as a senior statesman. We now need leaders in their 50s or at the most early 60s. Gone is the time period of leaders in their 70s. The disconnect with the people is too large.

Sob I disagree with you here. The BJP and the Sangh must focus on working at gross roots in the states and not both much focus on the Center.Sob here we need to speak of an ideology, aim and an org woven around it.BJP is a political culmination of the social orgs of the Sangh Parivar.Even the dravidian parties are a culmination of the DK org of Periyar. The Congress is a culmination of the freedom movement with its sole aim staying in power sans ideology and cadre. What we are seeing here is a withering of the Congress. The BJP can afford to be lenient with leadership at the centre as even now it is a party attached to the Sangh.BJP is an offshoot off the Sangh not the other way round like other parties

India is in a period of transition we will be seeing a gradual withering of dynastical politics. With the odd exception being YSJ we will be seeing the end of dynastic idiocy in a couple of years
