Polish NSM division (NSM Coastal Defence System)

    This time I would like to present polish costal NSM division.
    In theory it's sucessor of the costal artilery defens.

    After almoust 3 yers of preperign costal NSM division is redy and the "fixed" base is in Siemirowice city. Of course in time of war whole NSM division will be dislocated and hidenn somwhere near Baltic costal line.

    What consist first polish NSM division?
    "Nadbrzeżny Dywizjon Rakietowy" (in polish) conist two fully independent baterry.

    Eacht NSM baterry have:

    Battery Command Vehicle +Mobile Command Center (visualy almoust the same vehicle) :

    3x fire units eacht whit:
    Mobile Launch Vehicle + Command Control Vehicle :

    + NSM suply vehicle

    Complete NSM costal division consist 27 vehicle and 24 NSM (Naval Strike Missile) - on six (6) Mobile Launch Vehicle (6x4) + 24 Naval Strike Missile in reserve on NSM suply vehicle.

    The main fire system is of course NSM (Naval Strike Missile):

    The main feature of the Naval Strike Missile is stealt and passive only guidance. The RCS is almoust incredible small and sea-skimmer mode give conected whit active flight mode and active responde on situation awarness give great chanse to overcoem any known defence.
    The main feature of the polish NSM division (NSM Coastal Defence System) is "distributed architecture". Two radars are not main detector system(!) in fact whole NSM division is preperaed to fight in netwarfare batelfield when targets will be detected by air, sea and other systems - using radars is option only in case of emergency and shoud not by done normally. Whole division is base on "distributed architecture" as I said - in theory the smallest unit able to fight is only Mobile Launch Vehicle - yes it can independly make whole fire process - if external data will be avaible for crew of course. Thanks that whole division is quite resistant against enemy counteraction. Eacht vehicle in division is using special multispectral coverage called "Berberys":

    In close future (5 yers?) will be bought and developed second the same NSM division.

    What is interesting - whole polish NSM division is used as long-range strike force and some ballance factor against russian Toczka and Iskander (soon) rockets in Kaliningrad region. After yers of threats from russian side about put Iskander or other rockets in Kaliningrad special region (really near polish borders) polish Army decide to devleoped some - limited - countrmesures - like JASSAM in Air Force, long range Excalibur/Volcano in 155mm SPH Crab bateries, new 300mm MLRS "Homar" bateries, and in Navy - long-range NSM division when nobody is pretending that ships will be most important targets for polish NSM division - it's amoust exatly opposite and it is assumed that land targets will be priority ans ships will be possible aditional targets. And this is next reson why NSM division is based on distributed architecture and prepered to work under enemy Air Superiority.

    How does it compares against other contemporary missiles of its class ?

    Is 7 vehicles the minimum needed for the battery to work ?

    What's the maximum range & what's the trajectory ?

    What's the Circular Error Probability (CEP) ?

    Details of its passive guidance ?

    Is mid-course correction possible ?

    What kind of warheads have been tested so far & which ones are the preferred ones ?

    What's the value proposition or relevance for India ?

    In theory yes, in Poland both option (anti land and anti-shipping) are the same importnat, maybe anti-land is even more important.

    No, eacht serial NSM have sucht abilities -it's anly problem to program "fly path" and give target coordiantes and if it's posible thermal target signature.

    Propably the most "stealth" missile and whit TOP seeker and "inteligence". Very advanced whit abilities to active use and change position many NSM rockets in one salvo (attack from diffrent directions in the same time, posibilities to use one NSM as "vanguard" and rest as sea-skimmer in the same time, etc)

    No, to work is needed only one vehicle: Mobile Launch Vehicle - if they are some external data about enemy position then NSM can be launched from only single vehicle -or when rest division is destroyed. Of coure attac will be not so good preapared as whit cooperation whit rest vehicles (mission planning) but it's possible to use only Mobile Launch Vehicle alone.

    Maximum range was 200km in polish requires, propably it is depand on how many manevrous and active anti-air defense manevrous NSM can do during fly - the lowest range is given as 150km. In polish sources it's given between 180 and 200km.

    Yes, and "active" changing fly path when seekers on NSM will detected enemy AA position or SAAM.

    Only telemetric for test and trening (two in Poland), and typical warhed called "New NSM Warhead" have weight 130kg is armoured and had "inteligent" fuze - when target is recognized the fuze is programed to explode warhed in that way to made the biggest possible damage in target (for example - deeply in target, on when the target is on open space - before hit ground, etc) In tehory 130kg warhed is small but we shoud remember that modern explosive material is sevral times stronger then older ones* -in fact 130kg explosive in NSM is equal to circa 250-300kg warhed from 1980s.

    Good question :) Brahmos and Club-E are very very modern but based on completly diffrent principles (idea) - very fasy, intligent, active ECM end others.It's complelty diffrent way of working.


    *for example modern 155mm artilery rounds have six time stronger explosive then second word war explosive 152 and 155mm rounds.
