Poachers thriving on Chinese support

The new patrons of illegal trade in tiger and leopard body parts from India are Chinese military officials, a London-based NGO has found.

“Wildlife traders told us that Chinese military officials were buying tiger and leopard skins for putting them up in their homes or for official purposes,” said Debbie Banks of Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), which visited China in August 2009 to investigate the illegal trade.

This year alone, 75 tiger deaths have been reported in India, the maximum since 2001, according to NGO Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI). “Tiger poaching cases reported this year (2009) are also the maximum in the last three years,” said Belinda Wright, executive director of WPSI, which partnered in the investigation.

The EIA photographed tiger and leopard skin and body parts in Lhasa and in Xining, Linxia, Shigatse and Nagchu provinces, but their visibility in markets had gone down since 2004, when the first such probe was held.

Investigators spotted 27 tiger, leopard and snow leopard skins in these markets. Many of them — all from India — were less than a year old.

In Lhasa, investigators found that Tibetans shunned tiger skins after a call by Dalai Lama, but Banks said, “Most of the business has gone underground, with rich Han Chinese from Beijing and Shanghai ordering tiger skins as decorative items.”

A huge jump in prices of tiger body parts in the last couple of years had made the business highly lucrative.

A full tiger skin in China costs between $11,660 and $21,860 (Rs 541,000-Rs 1 million), while a leopard skin fetches $1,020-$2,770 (Rs 47,000- Rs 129,000).

It's only going to get worse. This year is going to be the "year of the tiger" for the Chinese (no, not in the sense of 'tiger-conservation'). It is when some "really strong believers will want tiger skins, nails, even meat. If India wants to save its Tigers, it must deploy paramilitary forces to surround and protect tiger reserves.

When it comes the Great Panda, they are always so concerned about its conservation, since it being an endangered species, but for them the Indian Tiger seems to be more like a dog rather than being a highly endangered species that it is.

It is death penalty to kill a Panda for skin in China.

Indian media are the worst in abusing their press freedom to spread bullst on others. There are illegal trade for wild animal stuff in China. But these activities are certainly against Chinese laws and will be punished with less mercy than other countries. Here're some reports from Chinese internet:

Man reselling tiger skin sentenced to 10 years in jail
???????????10?_???

Zoo owner murdered a tiger and sold tiger skin for 80000 Yuans sentenced to 18 years in jail

Now tell me how India and Russia punish those who kill tigers for selling their skins.

so members logic is a one way train, an obvious sign of brainwashed. To them, anything bad thing from China must be true, There is no other possibility to explain the bad thing, the only answer is "evil commies", there must be no rule or law in China. They can never think independently.

Brainwash my foot !!....there is no race that is more responsible for the extinction of tigers, bears and various exotic animals more than the Chinese race.

Chinese medicine values these animals because supposedly they are aphrodisiacs that can enhance sexual performance. The Chinese are the only people in the world that will kill a 600 pound bear for a 10 ounce piece of gall-bladder.

When I lived in Malaysia....I knew of rich Chinese businessman who would pay thousands of dollars for Tiger organs, Deer or Bear parts.

The Chinese tiger farms are some of the most disgusting examples of animal cruelty and sheer depravity !!

Stop giving us a goddamn lecture, and go look at your own sick habits of your "great Chinese culture".

Better yet, tell your countrymen to get some Viagra and leave our Tigers alone !!!

Yes we do. Bengal Tiger, and Siberian Tiger are both protected species. Don't cite one or two examples to show how your country is virgin-clean when it comes to making sure there is no demand of tiger skin/organs, thereby helping us conserve it. When your state can suppress organized religion that "harms the society", it better learn to suppress ******ry as well (since you brand such religion as ******ry, and ironically let real ******ry flourish ("buying tiger parts in the 'year of the tiger' for good fortune" BS, etc)).

For that matter, ours is a democratic nation, pal. Freedom of speech and thought is a fundamental right of every citizen here, unlike yours !! On the contrary, your whole damn country is brainwashed daily by your regime and its strongarm institutions !!

Every democratic country's media abuses its press freedom. India is no exception ! Since your country's media act as cronies to your regime, you people have no idea of the power of a free media in society ! By the way your media spreads bullshit about India at the drop of a hat. At least ours doesn't misrepresent the basic facts, whereas yours' commits nonsense acts like painting a wrong map of India, misrepresenting Indian regions as Chinese or Pakistani !!

What facts? Indian media simply reflects the culture and mentality of her people. You do not need any facts. It has nothing to do with the value of free press in democratic society.

Again i will say that every country's media reflects the mentality & culture of her people, you are dumb enough not to understand that, pal ! A free press of any country seeks the opinion of the world as well as its own people on all issues, but obviously the voice of their own people will outnumber others' viewpoint, after all its their own country's voice !! And as the facts i am referring to is that we don't the basic facts like we don't portray Tibet as a free country in our media.... whereas yours on the contrary shows the state of J&K in northern India as not being a part of India which the whole world knows is an integral part of India, also your media shows some Indian regions as either Chinese or disputed. Our media doesn't stoop so low just to whip up some stubborn nationalism..

Seven arrested for smuggling wildlife products into China (Lead)

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) Seven people, including two Tibetans, have been arrested for illegal trafficking of wildlife products into China. Two tiger skins, two leopard skins, tiger bones and their body parts have been recovered from them, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said here Monday.
Charan Das, Amit Kumar, Ranjit, Sadhu and Ram Swaroop were arrested when CBI sleuths raided a general coach of the Yashwantpur-Hazarat Nizamuddin Sampark Kranti Express near the Nagpur railway station and recovered two tiger skins, 38.4 kg of tiger bones, teeth and body parts from them.

They were arrested Nov 5 with the help of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB).

“The accused in their interrogation named their associate Tashi Tsjhering, who was arrested from Majnu Ka Tila area in north Delhi. Two leopard skins, one otter skin and red sandalwood were recovered from his possession. Their other accomplice Tashi Ladoe was also arrested in Delhi,” a CBI official said here.

“The accused used to send this to China through Nepal. The cost of tiger skin and its bones in the present international market is around Rs.1 million and Rs.80,000 per kg,” the official said.

All seven will be in CBI custody till Friday. They are being questioned about where tiger poaching was taking place.

“Their other gang members are being identified,” the official said.
