So it all boils down to what and how much, will the Malaysians would be buying from us? Would it justify the cost of procurement of 10 mig 29 from them?
The real agenda my friend is the upcoming year end PM election and Mr.najib wants to be in the good eye s of the indian ethnics there in Malaysia .. He first went to Actor Rajnikanth s house to watched a movie with him before he even visited Delhi.. So its more of his personal trip which was given official colors for the election prospects ..
Go ahead and buy it but upgrade them with Indian and Western systems, no more reliance on Russia. You can get spares for these from FSU states. Just a stop gap to get numbers up. These have too many hours to be viable long-term.
Another motive behind the purchase of the 10 Migs can be so that we can cannibalize the Malaysian Migs for important spare parts we might have trouble acquiring from Russian vendors who are known for overcharging and delays in supplying equipment and.

Its an old tactic - buy old planes cheap to get spares to keep yours flying.

For that you need 1-2 test bed aircraft not 12 which is the number that IAF is looking to acquire. Its most likely purpose to fill up dwindling force numbers or for spares which I have suggested in the above post (#21).

Utilizing a twin engine fighter plane as a test bed for Kaveri? i don't think so coz it ain't safe. For that you need a plane with more than 2 engines. Besides we don't have that sort of test bed capabilities right now. An example would be our dependency on the Russians for testing out Kaveri earlier.

India currently operates around 112 Mig 29UPG and mig 29k. How many spare parts do you think we can get from a measly 10 migs? o_Oo_O

There are few things here.
a) Malaysians are not comfortable with MiG-29s and are more comfortable with Su-30 MKM which offer better warload and better range, Malaysia is now not about protecting their assets but also to show China their intent. For example the new bases that China is building, those cannot be attacked by the MiG-29 but can be done with their Su-30 MKM.
b) By selling off these to India, India gets immediate 10 units of MiG-29 which are useful on Pak side of fronter adding 10 units immediately once accepted/
c) Malaysia manages two things firstly is getting rid of its MiG-29 and and not spending more on buying and maintaining spares for Su-30 MKM and MiG-29 and thus streamline their spares management. India has dual advantage, gets Mig-29 almost intermediately and they also manage to get Malaysia with them for their spares and thus also in a way helping the availability of Malaysian Su-30 MKM by making spares available. Thus India and Russia already have an agreement and based on that India makes an agreement with Malaysia and hence getting business.

Also am sure that Malaysia might be eyeing Brahmos for their Su-30 MKM

Also maybe Malaysians are thinking of Rafale and so it makes sense to streamline their air force and get rid of the planes which other planes can take place, but that would mean less than 12 new planes.

Just a theory dude, too early to be making conclusions. I don't think there is any official confirmation from the Indian Govt. on the matter.
Once that comes we will know.
