China has placed an order for 250 Al-222-25 afterburning turbofans from the Ukraine to power its new L-15 jet trainer. That's enough jet engines for more than 100 trainers.

Ukraine Wins Engine Contract for Chinese L-15 Jet Trainer Production | Aviation International News
The L-15 is an advanced trainer aircraft built by Nanchang based Hongdu Aviation Industry Corporation. The aircraft made its maiden flight on 13 March 2006. The aircraft's general designer is Mr. Zhang Hong (张弘), and the development is reportedly assisted by Yakovlev OKB of Russia. The L-15 is a direct rival to the Guizhou Aircraft Industry Corporation (GAIC) JL-9/FTC-2000 Mountain Eagle in competition for the People's Liberation Army Air Force's (PLAAF) next-generation advanced trainer aircraft program.

yesterday...July 1st 2013...the maiden flight of PLAAF's JL-10( AJT status) ... it is another milestone of the Hongdu Aircraft Company's L15 project which is finally accept by the PLAAF after the 10 years' development....before it got the official code name(JL-10), this project was internationally marketed as L15 and got some orders already . within this year, L15 would be delivered to some African nation , the first batch is 6 units.

This is very alarming indeed. China will be even more reliant on CIS for engines than ever before. They should have figured how to make a simple trainer engine by now. Cutting numbers of jet trainers to 100 shows a significant decrease from the 170 J-8 trainers they have in service now. Shows the things to come for PLAAF.

See, despite all this, @shiphone derisively referred to Ukraine as a second rate European power (on the Sukhoi-35-flanker-e- thread in post # 541).

This is when Chinese posters themselves keep providing all the evidences to the contrary. China's heavy dependence on Ukraine for military hardware is all too well-known

May 1st.... the CCTV broadcasted special TV programs on various channels to celebrate the International Labor day...

one of the scenes came from the L-15/JL-10 trainer's Pulse-line assembly workshop where we could see quite some interesting things...

    -------------------------
the packed assembly line...few weeks ago. the Serial Production No. 9X frames has appeared which means so far the order of L15/JL-10 varients has exceeded 100 shared by PLAAF and African Nations...

    ------------------

the rolling out of the L-15B Light Attacker... this one should be the first prototype, the maiden flight haven't took place yet but it will be very soon...

the particularly long Airspeed probe for prototypes....the ECM pod on the tail tip means this is more than a trainer

5-blade IFF antenna--it is a Western Product not the standard PLAAF IFF device which means it is a Export airplane... the Fairing of ECM device on the tail tip is also striking...

the Engine is the one with afterburner- AI-222-25F ... the same as the L-15 LIFT varient...the AJT varient and JL-10 in PLAAF use the AL-222-25 without wet thrust...

typical recognition feature of L-15B...longer nose, larger intake, ECM pod, Engine, Wingtip pylons...etc

more L-15B under construction and they share the Assembly line with L-15 AJT and JL-10

This plane looks similar to American T 100. Did American copy the YAK?

the L-15B Multi-function Attacker Fighter Trainer was first revealed on Air Show China 2016 in Zhuhai although it was said for a while but few attention was caught... Last year on that event HongDu Aviation displayed the model and claimed that a 12-set contract had been signed.. it should be an African Nation just as that the Launch Customer was also a African Air force...

nine hardpoints are arranged for various payloads including a gun pod

it seemed a single seater plane but the rolling-out was Tandem cockpit

the nose is lengthened which is same as the LIFT varient ,longer than the AJT varient with a PESA radar, typical function range: 75KM

if you know the history between T100,L15 and YAK-130, you will understand the similarity.

The T100 is basically a USA version of M346(locally manufactured to win the contract), while M346 is a Italian version of Yak-130(with western engine and avionics).

L15 was related to Yak-130 to some extent(YAK provided technical support/instruction for initial design under some MOU/contract). Since PLA AF want to experience afterburning in the trainer, it has a longer fuselage to fit into engine with afterburner.

it will be very interesting if USA AF chose T-100. Yak did an amazing job. I think Yak-130 is the most beautiful advanced trainer.

Probably only the engine,it is from Ukraine. A joint venture is already establishedto build the engine in Chongqing.

    Beautiful aircraft! But the least well known of China's many projects -- J-20, F-31, J-10, Y-20, J-11B, J-15, J-16, etc.
