The United States is planning to send warplanes and warships to the South China Sea in order to put pressure on China over its artificial islands in the region, American officials say.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that the Pentagon is considering using “aircraft and Navy ships to directly contest Chinese territorial claims to a chain of rapidly expanding artificial islands.”

It also said US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter called for options that include flying surveillance aircraft over the islands and sending warships to within 12 nautical miles of the Spratly Islands.

Beijing is building artificial islands in the South China Sea, saying the construction is in its own sovereign territory.

However, Washington says the islands are made in international waters and it does not recognize the man-made islands as sovereign Chinese territory.

The Journal reported American aircraft have so far flown close to the Chinese islands and the USS Fort Worth has been operating in the area in recent days.

“We’re just not going within the 12 miles—yet,” an unnamed senior US official said.

The USS Fort Worth

Tensions between China and the US escalated in November 2013 after Beijing declared an air identification zone over the East China Sea.

The US military flew a pair of B-52 bombers over the area in defiance to China’s move.

The White House has not received the new plans by the Pentagon for sending the military to the region.

American officials believe that the case is complicated because the US government considers at least some of the areas where the Chinese have been doing construction as legitimate islands.

If approved by the White House, Navy ships and aircraft would be sent to within 12 nautical miles of the built-up sites that the US does not legally consider to be islands, according to officials.

There is no doubt that China is overreaching herself and her foolish claims over South China Sea.

The time is ripe to tell China Bande ban ja, paiye.

The US is on the right lines.

Needed this backup desperately. Hopefully China will bow and won't stop us from exploring Vietnam seas as well.

Well, not gonna happen.
Remember last time what boat cutting your cable? A fishing boat! So, literately, that was an "accident". There is nothing a US navy boat can do about it.
I am pretty sure this kind of "accidents" will continue happening to Vietnam boats, Chinese boats, Philippine boats and Taiwanese boats. That is how the game played. Gunboats can't do nothing otherwise even Taiwanese navy could wipe out the entire Vietnam and Philippine navy all together decades ago.

China would always be a Ganda and not Banda.

The blood of Han Chinese is boiling with sheer arrogance due to recent economic boom and wanna throw it away in a war.

Chinese "peaceful rise" needs to be turned into "pieceful rise".

A little sabre rattling in South China Sea would actually generate enough public support in the US for more defense spending to counter the so called enemies of America (this rhetoric sells well in the US).

A quick look at the world map will show that South China Sea to PRC is like the Gulf of Mexico to the US. It is obvious who is going out of the way to poke someone else.

From an Indian PoV, let them continue this shadow boxing. As long as the US and PRC exhaust each other, we can focus on quietly lifting ourselves up. India needs to avoid being the one that bells the Chinese cat.

Americans have lost the battle against Russians in Ukraine, now they have to score in South China Sea.

the land reclamation work China is doing in south China Sea drives Americans crazy, once China finishes the deployment and has defacto control over south China Sea, the first island chain surrounding China becomes meaningless.

This is a political gesture rather than a military move. Simply Americans needs to show a stronger commitment to Asian allies or they will falling into Chinese economical and political circle. It is RECP vs TPP. Since TPP can't win in economic term, now Yankees have to add some military chips.

Doesn't matter who poke whom, the question is not about South China Sea, it is East Asia ( or even the whole Asia). Chinese is doing exactly what Americans did in late 19 centuries--- "Monroe Doctrine" even they don't claim it publically.

It is not another "cold war". Both sides are fighting for their economic "colony". To be noticed, India is excluded from either, which means China and USA are determined to make sure that India won't be the winner from the beginning.

As a developed country, i think china should help its neighbours to sustain there problems instead of making them fear and doubtful. Remember, neighbours can't be changed. China as a developed nation, should have to show she is a civilized country, should promote harmonious relations with whole world especially neighbours.

What if China don't back down, then what would USA do? Sanctions? not gonna work. War? yeah right:blah:

This is just useless posturing, Chinese now know that simple pressure tactics ain't gonna work on them, so they simply went ahead and start building the islands.

Chinese blueprint indicates that the SCS reclamation in total may eventually outstrip the landmass of Diego Garcia (20~30 sq km apprx.) with helipads, airstrips, radars etc. etc..

The whole world has got over complacent with the US policing and even Prez. Obama complains abt freeloading by China among others on the security America provides, as well as China's reluctance to shoulder the responsibilty to safeguard the world peace as one of UNSC P5. BTW does India give a damn to Garcia, ever?

Every SCS claimant is busy doing the same build-up to assert their presence, Viets, Filipinos... Why is China alone under the spotlight? With greater power cometh greater responsibility! People look up to China a heavyweight for a bigger role as usual.

With phase-in of those projects China will be able to secure the freedom of navigation and hence allieviate the burden on US over West Pac..

Also increasing drills in SCS may lead to solutions to reduce carbon footprints by burning less coal for the sake of Mother Earth.
