Parties monitor trends as Andhra Pradesh reports 75% polling

The TDP launched a counter-offensive saying that "Jaganmohan Reddy is now history," as his YSR Congress party is losing the polls.

As polling progressed in 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi rang up Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N Chandrababu Naidu, spoke to each other,at least twice during the day, and enquired about the “trend”.

“Favourable,” is what Naidu reportedly told Modi, indicating that the TDP-BJP combine is all set to make electoral gains as estimated in 175 assembly and 25 Lok Sabha seats where close to 75 per cent polling was reported on Wednesday.

The TDP’s assessment is that the combine is well placed in north coastal Andhra districts like Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam.

The TDP is expected to put up a good show in East Godavari and West Godavari districts, besides Krishna and Guntur in south coastal Andhra.

However, in Rayalaseema, the TDP-BJP combine might make a mark in Anantapuram and parts of Chittoor district, but lose significantly in Kadapa and Kurnool districts.

In Prakasam and Nellore districts, a tough fight between TDP and YSR Congress has ensued.

Overall, the trend indicated that the fight would be neck-and-neck between the TDP and the YSR Congress for power in the new state assembly, even as a similar trend is likely to be seen during Lok Sabha polls, being held simultaneously.

With 75 per cent polling reported so far, which may eventually end up on a higher scale after final figures are computed, each party has expressed confidence about winning a majority.

Around 3 pm, during the course of polling, the YSR Congress began a campaign claiming that it was on course to bag 130 assembly seats.

Viewing this as a YSR Congress “mind game” intended to influence voting patterns during the last three hours, the TDP launched a counter-offensive saying that “Jaganmohan Reddy is now history,” as his YSR Congress party is losing the polls.

While the two parties fought it out until the last minute, the Congress quietly slipped into oblivion, even as the Jai Samaikyaandhra Party of former Andhra Pradesh CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy too exited without a trace.

One wonders who is playing mind games.

Andhra will be a game changer.

It will be an interesting finish to watch.

One wonders what will be the outcome.

Maybe some poster from this area can give us the local reaction and outcome to what exactly is the ground situation.

I heard Jagan Mohan on TV.

He was very confident that he would sweep the elections.

How far would that be correct.

I believe that YSR pro poor schemes would go a long way to ensure so.

AFAIK the last two days prior to the elections saw a drastic change in fortunes. It is very difficult right now to correctly predict. It might be very close for both TDP and YSRCP in many constituencies. Congress is completely out of the picture.

Rural and Minorities support YSRCP because of freebies and people friendly schemes they have promised.

Educated and Urban folk are preferring development and are favoring TDP.

People are favoring Modi there by voting for TDP while choosing MP's. In case of MLA's TDP seems to have slight advantage.

What was the drastic change and how come it happened?

I thought YSR was hugely popular at least it in quite a few areas and TDP had serious doubts of their success.

TDP distributed money @ Rs. 2000 to 5000 per vote in many districts in the last two days. For reasons unknown, YSRCP limited itself to only Rs. 300 per vote and as per reports even most of that did not reach the intended people. YSR is still very much popular...maybe that is why they did not bother much and are banking on the ingrained fervor among the general populace.

The major trend in AP is that Congress is no where to be seen. They won 105 seats in 2009 from this region and are projected to win maybe 1-2 this time.

Has Congress seen such a collapse in AP before?

After the death of YSR , Jagan's party relied on sympathy for votes ..... But as always people will move on after some time ..... Reason why Jagan did the "odarupu Yatra" meeting all the people who died after YSR's death this program is also aimed at reminding the people of YSR's death and keep the sympathy on his family alive.

During the last 4 years Jagan's party portrayed the struggle of Jagan as a fight between Sonia and Jagan .i.e between Telugu pride and New Delhi.

This worked and Jagan got huge popularity because of sympathy and the courage he has shown in fighting the congress at the center.

This is all before his arrest.

After his arrest and release, things changed slightly.

Jagan also gave pro congress statements and people saw Jagan moving closer to congress. So the support he got because of sympathy and courage got reduced.

more over people of Andhra after the bifurcation of state wants development as their top priority. Chandra Babu Naidu along with Modi is seen as pro development combination which has influenced the urban and educated folk.

The voting percentage is more than 72% (close to 75% which means creamy layer voted in large numbers which may change the voting percentage from 2 to 3% for TDP) which means educated and creamy layer also voted and these votes are going to TDP.
