Park Street case no rape, but ‘deal’ gone sour: MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar

KOLKATA: How many times must a rape victim be humiliated when she sticks to her complaint? In Bengal, it is as many times as it suits the politicians. Or, so it seems, given the way Trinamool Congress MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar hit out at the Park Street rape victim yet again on Friday.

Not only did Ghosh Dastidar rubbish the rape complaint, in a crass attempt at character assassination she dubbed the case a misunderstanding between a "woman and her client".

"They (the Park Street rape and Delhi gang rape) are totally different. The incident at Park Street was not a rape at all. It was a misunderstanding between two parties involved in professional dealing — a woman and her client," Ghosh Dastidar told a private television channel on Friday.

The derogatory comment left the victim appalled and civil society disgusted. "I am shocked and pained at such a statement from an educated, polished public representative, that too a woman. I thought the Delhi gang rape would be an eye-opener for all of us, including politicians. But this kind of insensitivity has saddened me," the victim said.

"I went to the night club on my own. How did the MP know that I went there to strike a deal? Is it because the rapists left me alive? And what sort of a message is she trying to send out? Does she mean to say that sex workers can be raped?" she asked.

The victim was taken aback at the humiliation that continues even after the police had submitted the chargesheet and urged a collective statement from women slamming such a disparaging comment.

Writer-social activist Mahasweta Devi termed the remark "improper". "Such a comment should not have co-me from a woman. It reflects how insensitive she is. This is not expected from an educated lady and a public representative like her. So what if the victim is a 'public woman'? One should not even make such a remark against a sex worker," she said.

The Barasat MP is the new member of the club of irresponsible politicians after CPM's Anisur Rehman and Congress' Abhijeet Mukherjee who have drawn flak for maligning women in the past few days. While chief minister Mamata Banerjee had termed the Park Stree rape case a "sajano galpo (concocted story)", never before had any of her Trinamool colleagues raised questions about the victim's character in such blatant and gross terms. Immediately after the incident, transport minister Madan Mitra had questioned why a mother had to go to a night club.

Senior Trinamool leader Subrata Mukherjee, who was quick to condemn Anisur Rehman's sexist comment against the chief minister, was not so forthcoming when asked for his reaction on Ghosh Dastidar's insensitive remark. "You ask the person who made the comment," the minister said.

Park Street case no rape, but ‘deal’ gone sour: MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar - The Times of India

    **************************************

This lady (if indeed that is the word I want) is totally insensitive, daft and a disgrace to society.

Let us assume she is right that it was a 'deal', but does it mean that the woman be raped?

It is even an affront to society if a sex worker is imposed upon psychically against her wishes.

This Kakoli is a medical practitioner and has a her medical degree from R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, Therefrore, she is not an illiterate.

Her maternal grandfather served as the postmaster general of West Bengal. Her paternal uncle, the late Arun Moitra, was a freedom fighter and a former Pradesh Congress President. Her maternal uncle, Gurudas Dasgupta, is a current sitting Member of the Indian Parliament. And finally, her father, Late Ajit Moitra, served as the Chairman of the National Jute Manufacturing Corporation.

With such a pedigree, for her to act like a village idiot is most extraordinary and even the village idiot shows greater intelligence and sensitiveness that what this woman MP has displayed.

If this is the type of attitude our representatives show, then Bhagwan bachai Hindustan

The most disgusting behaviour I have seen in response to the rape cases is that of Politicians. They act village bumpkins and not like lawmakers who need to make laws to prevent such things from happening again. But then, this is India.

These are the people whom we elect/vote & the illiterate voters' vote are bought for a quarter of booze at most of the backward area or in the slums of big metros. This kind of election results in to Indian politicians[ majority ] sans apathy, conscience rather pathologically corrupt to the core in all dimensions of humanity.

    Cheers pseudo democracy !!

This is the type of idiot who is a politician.

He aamns the media for reporting the news. This tribal head, who has the audacity to claim he is a Raja, displays his feudal irresponsibility be feeling he is still in the dark ages of tribal leadership where cracking the whip was adequate to hide the truth.

If anyone is to be muzled, then this is the man who should be muzzled as would an irresponsible and senselessly rabid cannine because amidst the damage that has visited the Congress Party, over the tenure of the UPA2, this man takes the cake as the fountainhead for the decline of the credibility of the Congress Party with his irresponsible, populist and at times, immensely misplaced and provocative lunatic meanderings of his warped mind!

To imagine him wanting freedom of speech curbed!

If what is being said is wrong, there are laws.

But since the Govt does not act, it sure proves nothing is illegal being done or said.

So, what this man demands is actually illegal, undemocratic and disgraceful to the democracy given to us by Gandhi, Nehru and Ambedkar amongst others.

Is this man so arrogant to feel that Gandhi and others were fools and he, Diogvijay, is the sole wise man?

    The man is an idiot!

this woman is known as the "loud mouth" within the ruling party:blah:!she had made many such "disgusting" comments in the past also.how can a woman say such cheap things about another woman as we all know that only a woman can understand another woman's pain:mad:!the victim in the park street rape case is not a prostitute for chrissake, she is just another woman who went to the bar at night and some "animals" took this opportunity and raped her in a car in the pretext of giving her lift!now instead of punishing those criminals the Govt. of West Bengal is trying its level best to malign the victim!this is a real sad day for an ordinary Bengali like me:tsk:!
