The following thread is intended to chronicle incidents of terrorism in Pakistan. Requesting moderators to move all related posts in other threads here, and members' contributions with regular updates on the same.

Thread is neither intended to be comprehensive, historical nor is it intended to discuss in great detail specific acts of terrorism or instances of violence in Pakistan. In the event of an incident eliciting substantial further discussion, I request members to open a separate thread on the specific event to analyze it in depth.

Major, catastrophic events the likes of the recent Lahore attacks on the SriLankan cricket team or the Islamabad siege or events evincing considerable follow-up in the form of news updates, op-eds, etc. will automatically be started in a new thread.

EDIT: To give this thread a uniform approach, and to aid in a chronological compendium, I would request posters here to highlight and embolden the title of the news report in a font larger than that of the body of the text, and to not forget to insert the date of the said report as well.

Appreciate members' cooperation in this regard.

Cheers,

Suicide car bomber kills seven policemen in Peshawar

A suicide car bomber ordered to stop his vehicle detonated it instead at a road block in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, killing seven police officers and wounding several others, a senior police official said.

The bombing underscored the challenge facing Pakistan in rooting out Al-Qaeda, Taliban and other militants who are based in its northwest and believed involved in assaults on US troops across the border in Afghanistan.

The Saturday morning explosion occurred in an area on the outskirts of the main northwest city of Peshawar, senior police official Safwat Ghayur.

Bombings kill 11 in Pakistan amid political feuds

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A bomb-laden car exploded Saturday in northwest Pakistan as police tried to pull a body from it, authorities said, killing eight people amid growing international concern over the nuclear-armed country's stability.

The blast came days after gunmen brazenly attacked Sri Lanka's cricket team in eastern Pakistan and preceded planned anti-government rallies involving the main opposition party, whose leader was recently barred from elected office.

The deepening political turmoil concerns U.S. and other Western officials who need Pakistan to focus on fighting militants. Al-Qaida and Taliban fighters are believed to use pockets of Pakistan's northwest as bases to plan attacks on U.S. and NATO forces in neighboring Afghanistan, as well as against government and civilian targets in Pakistan itself.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said Friday it was "vital" for Pakistani politicians to stop feuding and "unite against the mortal threat that Pakistan faces, which is a threat from its internal enemies."

Taliban and al-Qaida-linked militants have staged numerous attacks against security forces near the Afghan border, including a roadside bomb that killed three civilians and wounded four troops Saturday in the town of Darra Adam Khel. Still, the strike that killed seven policemen and a bystander near the main northwest city of Peshawar appeared to be the first to use a body as a lure.

Local police chief Rahim Shah said his men went to the Badaber area after an unknown caller told them a body was in a parked car. Residents and police recently evicted militants from the area, prompting threats of retaliation.

"They found the white car. They also saw a body inside, but when they were pulling it out, the car bomb went off," Shah said, calling the setup a "new technique."

Pakistan recently claimed victory in an offensive against militants in Bajur, one of the nearby tribal regions overlooking the Afghan frontier. Officials also say they are close to flushing militants from the adjacent Mohmand tribal area.

At the same time, Pakistan also has raised alarm bells in the West by engaging in peace talks with Taliban militants and agreeing to impose Islamic law in the nearby Swat region.

The rest of the country has not been immune from violence, as demonstrated by Tuesday's attack on the cricket team in Lahore. Heavily armed gunmen killed six police and a driver and wounded several players before fleeing unscathed.

The assault bore some resemblance to November's terrorist rampage in the Indian financial capital of Mumbai. The Pakistani militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba has been blamed for that attack, in which 164 people were killed.

The group's chief spokesman, Abdullah Ghaznavi, on Saturday denied it was involved in the attack on the Sri Lankans. He blamed Indian spies, but offered no evidence to back that up.

"We consider it an attack on Pakistan," he told The Associated Press.

The group also denies involvement in the Mumbai attacks, which spurred outrage in longtime rival India.

Indian Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram declared Friday that Pakistan could become a failed state and raised doubts about who was in charge in the Muslim-majority nation, according to a news report.

"In Pakistan, with regret, I would say we don't know who is in control there — whether it is the army or the president or the government," the Press Trust of India news agency quoted Chidambaram as saying at a seminar. "It is not a failed state, but it is threatening to become one."

The Sri Lankans were attacked in Punjab province, stronghold of Pakistani opposition leader Nawaz Sharif.

The federal government recently dismissed the provincial government, led by Sharif's brother, after a court disqualified the Sharifs from elected office.

Their party intends to participate in a massive march on the capital in the coming week organized by lawyers calling for an independent judiciary.

An exceptional show of strength could hamper support for the federal ruling party, which is a year into its term as Pakistan's first civilian administration in nearly a decade.

Bombs kill 15 in Peshawar, Khyber

* Five cops, two FC men killed in Peshawar attack
* Two civilians killed in Darra car blast
* Five AI activists killed in Tirah blast

PESHAWAR: Three separate bombings killed at least 15 people in the NWFP and Khyber Agency on Saturday.

At least eight people, including five policemen, two FC personnel, and a civilian were killed in a remote-controlled car bombing in Mashugagr village. Some villagers also sustained minor injuries.

Muhammad Wali, a villager, said the car was unlocked and the villagers had found the body of an old man in it. “The blast occurred when police officials walked towards the vehicle,” he said. Security officials said about 40 kilogrammes of explosives were packed in the vehicle. They said it was likely that the militants who had blown up the shrine of Sufi poet Rehman Baba were involved.

According to Online, President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and several other political personalities have, in separate statements, condemned the bombing.

Darra blast: In a separate car bombing, at least two civilians were killed and seven others, including six security personnel, injured in Darra Adamkhel. Eyewitnesses said the Taliban detonated a car parked alongside the road when a convoy of Mehsud Scouts reached Bazikhel graveyard. They said security forces launched indiscriminate fire after the attack and arrested 15 locals. At least 10 people were injured, Online quoted a private TV channel as reporting.

Tirah blast: Also on Saturday, at least five people were killed and eight injured when a shop in the remote Tirah area of Khyber Agency was bombed, sources said. They said five volunteers of banned organisation Ansarul Islam (AI) were killed. An AI spokesman blamed rival militant outfit Lashkar-e-Islam for the blast. manzoor ali shah and qazi rauf/agencies

Taliban kill three US spies in Pak: Security official

PESHAWAR: Taliban militants shot dead three men in Pakistan's restive northwest tribal belt after filming them confessing to spying for the
United States, officials said on Monday.

"This is the first time in South Waziristan that militants have made confession videos. Before they just used to put notes on the bodies of alleged spies," Allahbagh Khan, a local administration official, said.

The bullet-ridden body of local tribesman Tahir Khan was found dumped on Monday in a bazaar in Wana, the main town in the semi-autonomous South Waziristan tribal region, a notorious hub of Taliban and al-Qaida militants.

"Khan, who was kidnapped 10 days ago, had multiple bullet wounds on his body," a security official said.

A DVD found with the body showed Khan confessing to spying and passing on information that led to a series of US missile attacks in the region.

A note found on the body said, "All those spying for the US will suffer the same fate," according to the official.

Two more bodies of alleged US spies were found an hour later with similar notes and DVDs. One was a brother of Khan and the third man was identified as Shabbir Khan, residents and officials said.

12 Militants Killed In Suspected U.S. Missile Attack In Northwest Pakistan

(RTTNews) - At least 12 militants have been killed in a suspected U.S. missile attack on a militant hideout in northwest Pakistan on Thursday, said Pakistani security officials and witnesses.

They said that the suspected U.S. missile attack targeted a house frequented by militants in the tribal area of Kurram near Pakistan's porous border with Afghanistan.

Witnesses said that they had seen U.S. drones hovering over the area shortly before the attack. They added that Taliban militants sealed off the area shortly after the attack and were retrieving bodies from the rubble of the building.

The tribal area of Kurram is one of seven semi-autonomous regions near Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, where US troops are engaged in fighting Taliban insurgency. It is the second such missile strike there since December 2008.

Pakistani government has lodged strong protests over U.S. cross-border missile attacks in the past, saying that such attacks violate the country's sovereignty and they end up killing civilians along with the targeted militants.

The attacker threw the hand grenade as trucks loaded with supplies waited for customs clearance near the Chaman border crossing in Balochistan, local police officer Gul Mohammad said.

“Soon after the grenade blast people saw a man fleeing the area and (he) disappeared in the rush,” he said, quoting witnesses. The truck was carrying a machine for drilling wells. The blast caused “minor damage” to the machine and no casualties, the officer said.

The crossing was briefly closed to trucks after the attack, for which nobody has claimed responsibility.

“Police have closed the crossing and are searching other vehicles,” the official said.

US and NATO forces in Afghanistan are landlocked in Afghanistan and rely heavily on two major supply routes running through Pakistan. About 80 percent of the coalition forces’ supplies are transported through Pakistan. The main one goes through the Khyber Pass in the northwest, and trucks that use it have frequently been attacked in the recent months.

The shorter route through Chaman has attracted less attention from attackers, but has not been exempt from violence. Agencies

Balochistan has been rocked by a four-year insurgency waged by militants fighting for political autonomy and a greater share of profits from the region’s natural resources. The province has also been hit by attacks blamed on Taliban. agencies

LANDIKOTAL: The security forces in Landikotal tehsil of Khyber Agency on Thursday clashed with the Taliban after they attacked an army camp using short-range missiles and mortars.

Fifteen people were reportedly killed in the missile attack.

The assailants targeted the military facility near the Landikotal bazaar from their hideouts in the mountains.

One of the rockets missed the target and hit a warehouse close to the bazaar, killing 15 men.

The men used to work at the warehouse and had also been using it as a makeshift residence.

Daily Times learnt that six bodies had been recovered so far from the rubble, while authorities did not have the necessary equipment to retrieve the rest from the debris.

Following the attack, the security forces retaliated hitting the attackers’ positions in the nearby mountains.

A source said a madrassa adjacent to the army camp was also hit in the missile attack.
