DRI quizzes Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and aides

Armed with his contract papers, Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, appeared at the office of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence as directed. The singer was accompanied by his aide Maroof and his Indian agent Chitresh Srivastav.

Tthe singer looked composed as he walked into DRI office at around 2 pm, dodging questions posed by the media.

DRI sources said that their questions were primarily based on their investigations into the various event management companies based in Jaipur, Delhi , Rajkot, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Many of the organizers the DRI contacted told them that they had paid him in Indian currency, while during his interrogation on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, the singer had told DRI that he was paid in dollars by them.

Sources said that the singer maintained that he was paid in dollars by his agent, Chitresh Srivastav. Khan claimed that all his payments were collected by Srivatsav. Asked why he did not declare the amount as is required by the law, Khan said that he was not aware of the stringent laws relating to foreign exchange. He also told the DRI that he has taken out foreign currency in a similar fashion in earlier instances. That money also, he claimed, he had earned in dollars in the shows he had done in India.

Sources said that they will further investigate Khan's claims and see how event management companies had access to such large amounts of foreign currency.

The probe has already been widened to investigations into the event management companies. If found guilty, provisions under the Customs Act and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), which can lead to imprisonment and a monetary fine.

Rahat's detention conspiracy against our artistes: Pak

Commenting on Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's detention issue, MPA Zobia Rubab Malik has claimed that "Pakistan expresses love towards Indian stars but gets only hatred in return".
Zobia made these comments while talking to media persons outside the Punjab assembly on Friday, The News reports.

The MPA stated that the arrest of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in India and related investigations were all part of a conspiracy against Pakistani artistes.

The government of Pakistan should fully stand by him and make sure that the celebrity returns to Pakistan at the earliest, she added.

Zobia also said that whenever India acted against Pakistan's artistes or players, the 'Two Nation Theory' came in her mind.

"India had in the past proven its enmity with Pakistan when it acted against Mohsin Hassan Khan, Shakil Siddiqi, Umer Sharif, Adnan Sami Khan, and now it is acting against Rahat Fateh Ali Khan," she alleged.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence released Rahat on Monday, a day after he was detained at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport for allegedly attempting to leave the country with over $124,000.

Rahat has been asked not to leave India, as his passport has been impounded.

Law is the same for everybody irrespective of nationality, if crime is committed in India. And Rahet Fateh does not carry a diplomatic passport. So law should take it's course, and if found guilty Rahet should be handed over a sentence for tax evasion. This would also send a strong message to Pakistan that our laws do not spare even tax evasions, while yours do not even touch terrorists.

Charges slapped against Pak singer Rahat

Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who was grilled on Saturday by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), has been charged with violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and Customs Act.

His manager Maroof has also been charged for similar offenses.

Earlier Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was questioned on Friday by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials for allegedly carrying $ 1.24 lakh (about Rs 60 lakh) of undeclared foreign currency.

The investigation was against Rahat and four of his associates.

This was the fourth time that Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was quizzed since his detention on February 13 at Indira Gandhi International Airport here.

The DRI officials had also interrogated two foreign exchange dealers in Mumbai on Friday in connection with the matter.

Besides Rahat, his manager Maroof, owner of an event management company Chitresh Shrivastava, and two employees of Mumbai-based Foreign Exchange firm were detained and questioned at length about the source of the money.

Rahat was detained when he, along with his 16-member troupe, was on his way to Lahore via Dubai.

Soon after their detention, searches were conducted simultaneously on the premises of "Eyeline Telefilm and Events" in Mumbai, owned by Chitresh, elder brother of bollywood singer Aadesh Shrivastava.

Sources privy to the investigations claimed that the sleuths found Rs 51 lakh in cash which was seized besides some documents.

As per norms, no one can carry beyond $ 5,000 in cash and $ 5,000 in other instruments. The person has to declare the amount if he is carrying more than this to the Customs Department.

Meanwhile, authorities here have extended singer's visa to 10 more days after its expiry on February 14, sources said.

Khan is rated as a one of the top playback singer of Hindi film industry who has several hit numbers to his credit. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer this year for 'Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji' from the movie 'Ishqiya'.

Rahat let off with a fine of Rs 15 lakh

Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and his manager Maroof have been slapped with a penalty of Rs 15 lakh each in connection with recovery of huge amount of foreign currency from them which stands confiscated, official sources said on Sunday.

The duo were to board a Dubai flight when the sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence detained them at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on February 13 with allegedly undeclared amount of $1.24 lakh (nearly Rs 60 lakh) and some other instruments too in foreign currency, the sources said.

The duo will be allowed to leave the country after they pay the penalty imposed on them by the Customs Department. The foreign exchange will remain confiscated, the sources said.

After completing its probe, the DRI has charged them with violating provisions of the FEMA and Customs Act and sent the matter for adjudication to Customs, they said.

The Customs department imposed a penalty of Rs 15 lakh on each of them but they have not paid the penalty yet, they said.

The investigations against event manager Chitresh Shrivastava, who is under detention, and two foreign exchange dealers of Mumbai, would continue, the sources said.

The DRI had questioned Rahat (37) and Maroof about the money recovered and payments received during their shows in the country and the mode of money transfer.

It had also quizzed a number of other persons in the case, which included his event managers.

Meanwhile, the agency sleuths had raided the premises of "Eyeline Telefilm and Events" in Mumbai, owned by Chitresh Shrivastava, elder brother of Bollywood singer Aadesh Shrivastava.

Sources privy to the investigations claimed the sleuths found Rs 51 lakh in cash from the company, which was seized besides some documents which could be helpful in the probe being carried out by the DRI.

Rahat and his entire 16-member troupe, including Maroof and the event manager, were detained by the authorities. The troupe was on in its way to Lahore via Dubai.

Rahat was quizzed by DRI officials for 10 hours on Thursday.

As per norms, no one can carry beyond $5,000 in cash and $5,000 in other instruments. A person has to declare the amount if he is carrying more than this to the Customs Department.

According to sources, the payments by an event manager to Rahat were made in Indian currency and US dollars and these people were allegedly found converting the dollars to Indian rupees "through unauthorised channels".

Rahat is rated as a one of the top playback singers of Hindi film industry and has several hit numbers to his credit. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer this year for Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji from the movie Ishqiya and his first Bollywood hit was Laagi Tumse Mann Ki Lagan from the film Paap.

Seek NOC before travelling to India: Pak govt to singers

Islamabad: Close on the heels of the detention of singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in Delhi on charges of illegal possession of foreign currency, the Pakistan government today announced that actors and artists will have to obtain a No-Objection Certificate before travelling to India.

The Culture Ministry will certify Pakistani actors and artistes before the NOCs are issued to them by the Interior Ministry for travelling to India, an official statement said.

A decision to this effect was made at a high-level meeting chaired today by Interior Minister Rehman Malik.

The meeting, which was attended by representatives of all ministries, decided that no artiste or actor will be allowed to travel to India without an NOC after March 15.

Malik had announced in parliament that artists will have to obtain NOCs to travel to India in the wake of Khan's detention last week.

Khan was detained after he and members of his troupe were found to be carrying undeclared foreign currency worth USD 124,000. He was let off after he paid a fine of Rs 15 lakh.

The singer blamed the incident on his lack of knowledge of Indian customs laws.
