Your point apart, subcontinent has come back largely because India has tried to undo the "South Asia" coined by the Pakistanis backed by the Americans and the west back in time since the 50s/60s.

If one gets to hear more of subcontinent today than SA, it just shows us how well the undoing of SA is happening, and its good Pakistanis are taking to the term.

That said, it is time we moved to Indian-Subcontinent nomenclature, which is what this region always was.
