WASHINGTON: Pakistan is the least favoured nation in India with only 18 per cent seeking better relations with the neighbouring state while 64 per cent wanting to stay away from it, says a new survey released here on Thursday.

The survey by the Washington-based Pew Research Centre claims that nearly three-quarters see Pakistan as posing “a very serious threat to India”.

The survey also describes Pakistan as “a long-running and particularly neuralgic problem in India-US relations”.

But more and more Indians now see the US government being on their side in the India-Pakistan conflict.

About 45pc Indians say American policy favours India rather than Pakistan while only 12pc say it is otherwise. This is a ratio of nearly four-to-one.

An additional 28pc believe that Washington’s policy on the subcontinent fairly balances between Delhi and Islamabad. In 2013, 36pc thought the US favoured India, while 12pc said Pakistan.

Just 43pc have a positive view of Russia, relatively unchanged over the past few years. About four-in-ten (41pc) see China favourably, yet that sentiment is up 10 points from 2014.

And just 28pc are favourably disposed towards Iran. In each case, those with at least some college education have a better opinion of other countries than do those with a primary education or less.

But, for many Indians, especially those living in rural areas, other countries are truly foreign. Roughly four-in-ten Indians express no opinion about Iran and Russia, almost three-in-ten have no view on China, and about two-in-ten say they don’t know how they feel about the US.

And about six-in-ten (63pc) say it is more important for India to have strong economic ties with the US, compared with just 14pc who hold the view that a closer commercial relationship with China would be in India’s best interest.

A year after an election swept the opposition Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) into power, public satisfaction with India’s direction has nearly doubled while pride in the country is up, as about two-thirds of Indians have a very favourable view of current Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

That's not surprising! Pakistan will remain a thorn on our side so long as the extremists and the Pak Army control foreign policy. The lame duck civilian government has no say in this. Nawaz is heading a sham democracy.

As the world says, a country has an army but in Pakistan the army has a country.

Multiple reasons for the USA shifting towards supporting India.

1. Most of the Indian immigrants that came to the USA were skilled professionals. That generation has now matured and gotten into positions of power and influence and their populations has grown to about 3M people in the USA. Usually white Americans see most minorities as against them, but the Indians here being rich tend to be seen as neutral or even friendly by all sides. Many Americans have now had at least 1 Indian friend in America that they like/have gotten to know and this does wonders.

2. There is a powerful Jewish lobby in America and they have been in recent years strongly advocating for India and teaming up with the influential Indians. This effect often goes unmentioned but is quite significant and is a direct result of closer India-Israel ties.

3. There is a lot of anti-Muslim sentiment in America lately. Before Americans use to think of the Soviets as "Godless savages" and saw Muslims as a fellow Abrahamic religion. Now they see the world as "radical Islam" vs liberal/tolerant/progressive cultures and religions and Hindus are seen as hardworking, into technical fields and non-aggressive

4. There is a view in America that "our ally" was taking our money and backstabbing us with their ISI by helping terrorists kill American soliders. Right now they haven't made as big a deal out of it because they need Pakistan's help while they have troops in Afghanistan, but some American revenge/pay back in the future is likely.

5. America fears nothing worse than a rival that could take their place as the global super power. Anti-China rivalry is getting higher and higher around here, with presidential candidates already talking about being "tough on China". Pakistan is seen as pro-China and India as an anti-China ally in the USA. Honestly most Americans think India is a strong political ally. They assume since they have Indian friends they get along with/like, surely their two nations must have a similar relationship. It is only the American political elite that is aware of the past history between the two nations and how India is about non-alignment/apprehensive of an alliance with the USA. Hell most Americans don't even know India is pro-Russia, the last republican presidential candidate McCain wrote an article in which he mentioned "showing India that America is committed to resisting Russian expansion in Europe". Obviously he didn't realize the last country in the world India is worried about is Russia.

:megusta:

Only 18% Indians are morons/anti nationals who want +ve relations with Pakistan? I thought majority of Indians are morons.

Do not cast aspersions on a whole group. A section maybe having an issue but you cannot lump them with the entire group.

Not to be apologetic, but there is actually a very significant % of Muslims who hate porkis. Many due to rightful resentment for what porkis have done for them, .ie being made suspicious in India

I think 50% of that 18% are commies and the rest may be muslims

True.

There are many Muslims in India who absolutely loath Pakistan for what it stands for. But they are most likely not the mainstream. I have seen very few who are rabidly anti Pakistan compared to pro pakistani muslims.

But. Almost all of the commies I know are paki sympathizers. Exceptions are too few.

There is a % of the trader & industrialist community who rightly see enormous business from Indo Pak relations.

Lahore after all for instance is closer to say Ludhiana or Delhi than to Karachi.

There is no denying the business opportunity if things were not so bad.

Maybe its them.
