Pakistan Airlines crash: Pop star turned cleric Junaid Jamshed feared among 47 victims
Plane went missing shortly after taking off from the northern city of Chitral.

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane is feared to have crashed shortly after taking off from the northern city of Chitral on Wednesday (7 December), according to officials.

42 passengers and five crew were on board the aircraft, which was reportedly bound for Islamabad.

"We regret to inform that PIA's ATR-42 aircraft operating as PK-661, carrying around 40 persons lost its contact with control tower on its way from Chitral to Islamabad a short while ago.

"All resources are being mobilised to locate the aircraft. Media will be kept informed as situation develops," a PIA spokesman told Geo News.

"Rescue teams are reaching the scene of the crash, and then we will know more," Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) spokesman Pervez George said.

CAA sources told local media that the plane's pilot made a mayday call before losing contact with the control tower.

The aircraft crashed near Havelian between Majab and Piplian, 70km (43 miles) north of Islamabad, police told Express Tribune.

Geo News, citing civil aviation sources, said the plane lost contact with civil aviation authority at around 4.30pm local time (11.30am GMT). The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority said a search for the plane was underway.

Among those reportedly on board was Pakistani singer Junaid Jamshed. The singer's brother told Samaa TV that he was on board. Jamshed's name also appears on the flight's passenger list, according to Geo News.

The name of Chitral Deputy Commissioner Osama Warraich also appears on the list.

"All of the bodies are burned beyond recognition. The debris is scattered," Taj Muhammad Khan, a government official based in the Havelian region, told Reuters.

Khan, who was at the site of the crash, added that witnesses told him "the aircraft has crashed in a mountainous area, and before it hit the ground it was on fire".

In December 2014 Jamshed issued a pleading public apology after a video of him apparently criticising the Prophet Muhammad's wife was shared on social media, leading to an investigation into suspected blasphemy being launched by authorities.

Jamshed, who was the lead singer of band Vital Signs, was caught on camera while allegedly making derogatory remarks about the prophet Muhammad's youngest wife Ayesha. Jamshed allegedly claimed that the girl would always demand more attention from the Prophet.

ISLAMABAD: A senior aviation official has confirmed that the ill-fated Pakistan International Airlines aircraft, which crashed near Havelian with 47 people onbaord, suffered engine problems.

Speaking to reporters at the Islamabad airport on Wednesday, Secretary Aviation Irfan Ilahi confirmed that the ATR-42 turboprob plane suffered engine problems.

"It is premature to say anything at the moment, but we know that the aircraft had engine problems," he said.

When asked about the operation, he could not confirm how many bodies had been taken out from the crash site, but he said that an information desk has been set up at the Islamabad airport to guide families of the passengers.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, pilots told Geo.tv that the ill-fated PIA ATR tail registration AP-BHO had previous complaints of engine flameout.

CAA sources confirmed that the pilot of flight PK-661 sent a mayday call to the control tower shortly before the aviation staff on ground lost communication with the plane.

The PIA plane carrying 47 people crashed on a domestic flight near the town of Havelian in Abbottabad district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province from the mountainous northern city of Chitral to Islamabad.

The plane took off from Chitral around 3:00PM but communication with the control tower was broken around 4:30PM, shortly before it was about to arrive at its destination.

Pakistan has had a poor air safety track record in recent years.

The country's last major air disaster was in 2015 when a military helicopter crashed in a remote northern valley, killing eight people including the Norwegian, Philippine and Indonesian envoys and the wives of Malaysian and Indonesian envoys.

In 2012, a Bhoja Airline plane, a Boeing 737 carrying 121 passengers and six crew members, crashed near Islamabad just before touchdown.

The worst aviation tragedy on Pakistani soil came in July 2010 when an Airbus 321 passenger jet operated by the private airline Airblue crashed into hills overlooking Islamabad. The flight was coming in from Karachi. All 152 people on board were killed in the accident, which occurred amid heavy rain and poor visibility.

Another deadly civilian plane crash involving a Pakistani jet came to pass in 1992 when a PIA Airbus A300 crashed into a cloud-covered hillside on its approach to the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, killing 167 people.

It is not yet clear how many casualties there were. The airline said it has mobilised its emergency response centre.

on a totally unrelated note why india has never tried to ship some few manpads and have them target civilian airliners in pakistan its not that much hard to accomplish and requires less planning then the attack on army bases also scares the shit out of foreigners to visit the shithole also mean less investments even their expats would be scared shitless in visiting their shithole every which way this is a good idea india should for sure look into this i would be really happy if we did something like this.

PS if mr NSA you're reading this i would like to donate some chanda like enough funds to buy a manpad you know for blowing some flying pigs ehm ehm ehm uhh i mean humanitarian causes.:biggrin2::biggrin2::rofl::rofl:

recently Paki rangers Got anti Aircraft Guns in Karanchi .........................I'm Sure BLA will Get all Types of weapons if RAW is Supporting them .

by the way Targeting civilians is wrong approach for Any freedom Fighters Group , this reduces Public support for them & not Good for Organization.

Check BLA tweets they Rarely Target Paki civilians , thy always Target Paki soldiers or chini workers .

We should arm the Balochis preferably with Chinese/American made hardware, what they do with it is their business at least until Pakistan hands over Maulana Azhar, Hafiz Saaed and flat out disassociates itself from the cause of Kashmir independence.
