Pakistan: Christian woman given death sentence under blasphemy law appeals in SC

Lahore: A Pakistani Christian woman and a mother of five, convicted under the controversial blasphemy law in 2010, on Monday filed an appeal in the Supreme Court challenging a High Court's ruling upholding her death penalty.

"We filed an appeal today in the Supreme Court (Lahore registry) against the Lahore High Court's verdict in the Asia Bibi case," Asia's counsel advocate Saiful Malook said. He said Asia Bibi, 47, had been implicated in a false blasphemy case and she would prove this in the Supreme Court.

"Supreme Court is the highest forum and Asia Bibi has not given up hope of getting justice," he said. Malook said there had been legal defects in the judgement of the High Court in the case. Last month, a two-member Lahore High Court bench dismissed the appeal of Asia Bibi after her lawyers failed to prove her innocence in the court.

"We have raised various points in the appeal. The FIR has been registered against Asia under blasphemy laws five days after the incident. While in the Ayub Masih case 2002, the Supreme Court had taken notice of a three-hour delay in registration of FIR and given relief to the accused on this ground.

"The complainant, cleric Muhammad Salam, reported the matter to police five days after the incident which is itself a testimony of his being a lair," Malook said while sharing the contents of the appeal.

He said two Muslim women who gave statement to police against Asia did not testify in the court. Asia Bibi, a mother of five, is a resident of Ittan Wali village district Sheikhupura, some 60 kilometers from Lahore. She was arrested in 2009 under blasphemy charges - Section 295 B and C of Pakistan Penal Code, subject to capital punishment - while working in a farm with Muslim women.

Her two fellow Muslim women - Asma and her sister - accused her of making drinking water unclean by touching the pot. Christians are prohibited to touch eating or drinking utensils used by Muslims in Pakistan. The Muslim women reported the matter to a local cleric Muhammad Salam who filed a blasphemy complaint against Asia with the police. Asia Bibi was sentenced to death in 2010.

Her case shot to prominence when Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer was assassinated in January 2011. Mumtaz Qadri, the assassin of Taseer, in his statement to police said he killed Taseer for calling blasphemy laws "black" and pursuing the case of Asia Bibi.

Saiful Malook was a prosecution lawyer in the Taseer assassination case. During the proceedings, the trial judge left the country because of threats from extremists. Asia's husband has also submitted a plea for clemency to the President Mamnoon Hussain.

In any case there will be death.
Actually, the woman's death warrant was signed the moment somebody pointed a finger at by a cleric.
If she is acquitted, a mob will kill her. If jailed, policemen will kill her.
And additionally, in case she is acquitted the judge will be gunned down.
Yes, long live blastocracy!!

Re: Pakistan: Christian woman given death sentence under blasphemy law

I don't understand foolishness of non muslims in muslim lands, why they still stuck to their gods other than alla peace be upon him .They know one day some neighbor muslim call other peaceful muslims and kill/rape men and women so on.:frusty: It is happening 1000 yrs and it will.

So better change ur religion or migrate or turn suicide bomber
Alla do not need peace I think, he is not a prophet !!

I do not understand why people say peace be upon him, is that guy in the state of war or what??

Why would anyone change their religion ??

People find strength and peace in worship it is not specific to only Islam. Some are deeply religious.

Fear grips Christian locality in Lahore over alleged blasphemy case
LAHORE: Fear gripped a Christian locality in Lahore for a second day on Monday, a day after a charged mob of hundreds attempted to attack a church and looted houses over the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran by a member of the locality.

Humayon, the accused, was allegedly seen burning pages of the Holy Quran after which he was handed over to the police.

Following a complaint by Sayed Zeeshanul Haq, police registered an FIR against accused Humayon under section 295-B of Pakistan Penal Code and arrested him.

The complainant, Haq, told The Express Tribune that they spotted Humayon burning pages of Quran. Haq said an owner of a tea stall told him about it and they spotted him and handed him to the police.

“Many people gathered on the spot and some of them even tried to burn him alive, however, we saved him and handed him to the police,” he added.

“Later a charged mob reached the house of the accused and recorded their protest.”

The mob, some armed with deadly weapons, chanted slogans of Allah-o-Akbar also resorted to aerial firing. They looted around 15 houses in the area.

Fearing for their lives, most residents left their houses, a resident of the area Khalid Shehzad told The Express Tribune.

“Humayoun is mentally instable and does not understand the sensitivity of the matters,” Khalid added.

The resident of the locality further said the charged protesters looted belongings from houses, broke electricity metres and also broke down doors of houses.

“Some were chanting abuses against Christians while firing,” he added.

Although heavy contingents have been deployed in the locality to avoid any untoward incident but most residents have still not returned to their houses fearing a repeat of the Joseph Colony. In March 2014, a charged crowd set 200 houses ablaze in a Christian locality over alleged blasphemous remarks by a resident of the area.

On Sunday night, police stopped the mob from torch the church and house of the accused which led to violent clashes between them and the protesters.

As the mob pelted police with stones, two contingents of Punjab Rangers were sent to the area to restore peace. The police also resorted to baton-charge after Lahore DIG Operations Dr Haider Ashraf suffered a head injury in the clashes. Five other police officials were also injured during the clashes.

An FIR in this regard was also registered at Sanda Police. The police has not yet said whether arrests would be made in this regard.

Although the alleged incident took place in the jurisdiction of Gulshan-e-Ravi Police, a charged mob led by local clerics reached the Christian locality in Dhoop Sari area where the house of accused Humayoun alias Faisal is situated.

this has been a norm. some nincompoop walks in a police station or/and spreads rumours about his witnessing a particular person burning the pages of the scripture, and what follows is the usual rapture. later the attacked person is told to be mentally unstable. such a thing happened in afghanistan earier this year, and the truth revealed later was something else than the 'mentally unstabe' version. settling scores is easy in islamist countries.

It's easy to kill someone using the "Law" in Pakistan without any gun.

Just blame anyone(specially minority) of insulting Koran and burn few pages and throw it in their houses and raise hulla boo and game over.

So as His Holiness rock127 was explaing this another major attack on Christians was taking place. Church, homes were attacked, looted, religious books burnt and what not.Christians ran for their lives.

This is a STATE SPONSORED TERRORISM against minorities in Pakistan which is happening on daily basis now.So minorities are forced to convert or flee Pakistan so it becomes a SUNNI PAKISTAN.

BREAKING NEWS: Pakistan Mob Attack Churches, Homes In Lahore
"The Christians of the area were already warned and informed about the attack by police and they locked their homes and fled away to save their lives," said Sardar Mushtaq Gill, who leads the Legal Evangelical Association Development (LEAD) group."The enraged mob attacked Christians homes and they broke windows, doors and electric meter reading equipment. They also looted household things," added Gill, who visited the area.

Rights activists say Pakistan’s blasphemy laws have contributed to an atmosphere of hatred as it makes it easier for Muslim mobs to "fabricate" evidence against Christians. The rights activists told BosNewsLife that 2015 "has so far been the most violent in terms of sectarian violence and attacks on the minorities in Pakistan."

In 2013, more than 100 houses were burned in a Christian neighborhood in Lahore after a Christian was alleged to have made blasphemous remarks. Most recently, two churches in Lahore were attacked in March. At least 17 people were killed and many more seriously wounded.

Pakistan: Anti-Christian violence erupts in Lahore after alleged Quran burning

Humayun Masih, the man who allegedly burnt the Quran, has been described as mentally unstable.Humayun who is mentally unstable and a drug addict was burning some newspaper with holy verses. There were violent protests in Lahore in March this year after two suicide bomb attacks on churches killed 17 people.

According to the blasphemy law, there is a procedure to be respected and no one must be allowed to take the law into his hands.

Alleged Quran Desecration Sparks Muslim-Christian Violence In Lahore, Pakistan

Mob violence erupted in the Sanda area of Lahore, Pakistan, Sunday following reports a Christian man had burned pages of the Quran, various reports on Twitter and in niche media sources indicated. According to Christians in Pakistan, a nonprofit organization, a Christian man named Humayun Masih was burning newspapers when onlookers assaulted him, claiming he was burning verses of the Quran. He was taken to the local police station to be charged under section 295-B of Pakistan’s penal code, which makes it unlawful to desecrate the Quran.
Sources in Pakistan and local media are offering conflicting reports, but several indicated a mob of Muslim religious leaders gathered in the Sanda area to protest, blocking roads and demanding that Masih be burned alive. Other reports suggest a church was pelted with stones.

Pakistani Christian Colony ‘Dhup Sarri’ Attacked in Lahore

Xavier Patras William concluded by saying, "This year has so far been the most violent I can remember in terms of sectarian violence and attacks on minorities in Pakistan. We urge the authorities to intervene and ensure the safety of the religious minorities, especially as Lahore has witnessed the loss of lives in the Youhanabad incident."

He was referring to an attack on Sunday March 15, 2015, when least 17 people were killed and more than 82 injured when two Taliban suicide bombers attacked churches in in Lahore's Youhanabad neighborhood, home to more than 100,000 Christians.
