QUETTA: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), Balochistan, has banned relay of programmes of popular Afghan television channels by cable operators, but Indian channels can still be watched in the province.

Pemra's Regional Director Jalal Khan told Dawn that Afghan TV channels RTA, ATN, Shamshad and Lemar had been shut "because of instructions from headquarters of the organisation". He said he did not know the reasons, but added that he had acted "in accordance with directives of Pemra headquarters".

The official claimed that he was unaware of the Indian channels. The Afghan channels are popular among the people because they telecast programmes, including dramas and songs, in many people's mother tongue.

This is the same country which has based it entire identity on hatred of India.. Does there need to be a threat perception?

RTA is the state TV, so you will get the healthy dose of pro-government material plus cultural shows. The rest are purely entertainment TVs which offer foreign dramas and music programs.

Their haterate for India I understand but against Afghanistan with whom they share the religion and culture more so on the Khyber areas..,

Any state media will definitly propagate government views same in Inda too, but banning is someting extraordinary unless one in a war like situation or creating public disorder...

These bans are done that time only when the existence of any country is in danger , Pashtuns are seeing how much they are neglected and denied by the Pakistani establishment

Watching Afghan programmes might influence Pashtuns into fighting for Pashtunistan.
