Pak wants defence pact with China

Pakistan has apparently been secretly lobbying for a defence pact with China though the initiative has been met with caution in Beijing, which feels that such an agreement could put the two 'all-weather' allies in trouble with the US and India, a media report said on
Tuesday.

Pakistan made overtures to China regarding the defence pact early this year when its relationship with the US was weakened by several controversies, 'The Express Tribune' quoted unnamed diplomatic and military officials as saying.

However, there is "little hope" for an immediate breakthrough, it said.

Islamabad used "backdoor and regular" diplomatic channels in an attempt to convince the Chinese leadership that the agreement would be "mutually beneficial", the officials said.

"Our view is, and it is also shared by authorities in Beijing to an extent, that this will send a strong signal to the world that Pakistan is not alone ... an emerging world power is standing behind it," an unnamed official was quoted as saying.

Pakistan formally raised the issue during a visit by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to China immediately after al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was killed in a covert US military raid on May 2 in Abbottabad, the official said.

"He put forward Pakistan's desire formally," said an official privy to the development who requested his name not be mentioned due to the sensitivity of the issue.

However, the Chinese leadership advised Pakistan not to push for an agreement that could put Islamabad and Beijing in trouble with Washington and New Delhi, officials said.

yeah defence pact would be great................something like this,
if someone attack China......................Pakistan wont do anything.
If someone attack Pakistan..............china wont do anything,
if either party attack anyone........... other wont do anything.

one will not defend other..........

at most rapid equipment transfer will take place with few military strategist and councillor getting transferred in case of war. nothing more than that. because pakistan is known for doing mischief in international platforms and then china will find it difficult to manage its rowdy friend every time. so i dont think anything beyond what it is already happening in this scenerio.

moreover i guess this stunt is only to show usa that we got new husband and i dont need you. same like test firing of missile by nations on tit for tat basis.

That would be the last thing China would want to do before fireworks season starts.

i seriously doubt china will fall for the bait any time soon.

china certainly wont want to be in a situation where it is them who will have to start fighting pakistan's war and come to their rescue which then could pit them against the US/west or even india. there is too much at stake for the chinese to lose something i doubt they even want to risk for a country like pakistan which is as good as a failed concept which is withering away.

it will be always the weapon transfer, intelligence sharing but anything that brings the chinese in direct confrontation with the outside world because of pakistan, no not happening.

on the contrary it is pakistan which will have to fight all the china's war and very soon it seems they will in FATA.

NO I believe they want something similar to the Indo-Soviet Pact we had during the Bangladesh war 1971 :)

Will China accept that let's see btw I remember reading an article where a Chinese diplomat told his US counterpart that Pakistan is their Israel...

china is in no shape to feed blackhole pakistan.they recently donated $1.25 million in the name of aid for enhancing security forces capability( read military aid). neither pakistan will find it sufficient to even think ahead of it.

of essence here really are the timing and the source of leak.

timing because this is happening when US-pak are both high on rhetoric and it comes on the back drop of PRC's vice-pm on pakistan's visit.

leak is coming from the pakistanis who are desperately trying to avert the US attack.

thing to remember, last time the pakistanis threw the bait of gwadar port to the chinese, that again happened when the US-pak relations were tanking and the rhetoric was on a high and eventually the chinese never took to it, but the pakistanis tried to present it as a case where chinese had taken to the idea.

pakistan finding it self increasingly isolated in troubled waters is desperately trying to make sure they dont get hit by the americans by spreading all such propaganda and no more.

even they realized it. for flood relief they offered $4.7 million against 100 million from iran and similar amount from usa and saudi. chinese company backed off from thermal power plant project on security issue even when usa is maintaining its assistance on similar project as of 27/09/11. china is selling weapons on long term simplified loans when usa is gifting perry class warships with just refitting cost included.
pak-china...happy honeymoon
This amount is a joke.

Meng extended China's "full support" to Pakistan's "sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and vowed to work with it for progress and peace in the region and the world", state-run APP news agency reported. Pakistan is the only country that enjoys an "all-weather friendship with China," he said.
Gilani thanked China for backing Pakistan when it needs support "the most", said a statement issued by the premier's office.
Gilani added, "Your friends are our friends, your enemies are our enemies and your security is our security".
The two countries together "can progress and prosper and bring the dividends of development to their people", he added.
After his meeting with the visiting Chinese minister, Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik also pledged to crack down against Chinese militants hiding in the country's restive tribal belt, saying China's enemy was an enemy of his country.

if anyhow uighurs are related to al qaeda or any other islamic fascist group then it will surely create a problem for pakistan if not china. china will become another usa pressing pakistan in the name of all weather friendship to do more( ironic terms) while pakistan will face direct burnt of terrorist by not complying by their diktat that muslims in need should be helped in deed at any place any time.
