Pakistan Cricket Team Prevented From Entering Mosque In Dambulla

Members of the Pakistani cricket team, who were in Dambulla today, were prevented from entering the Masjidul Khaira mosque in Dambulla for their Friday evening prayers

The decision, which earned the ire of the Pakistani cricket team and its management, was taken by authorities who overlooked the security of the team. The team arrived at Dambulla today for the third and final ODI with Sri Lanka which would take place at the international cricket stadium in Dambulla tomorrow.

Some players of the team were of the view that the incident amounted to an insult to the cricket team of Pakistan.

Following the incident, the Pakistani players had been instructed to go to the mosque in Galewela for their evening prayers. However, defying such instructions, some players had entered the Dambulla mosque and conducted their prayers.

A controversy occurred two years ago surrounding the mosque in Dambulla with several Buddhist groups calling for its demolition.

Riots broke outside the mosque with over 1,000 protesters led by Buddhist monks staged a demonstration calling for the demolition of the Masjidul Khaira mosque in Dambulla.

The protestors were calling for the demolition of the mosque claiming that Dambulla is a holy area exclusive to only Buddhists and that the mosque is situated in a sacred area
The area is already sensitive, Why defy orders and go inside?

Showing solidarity with their fellow Muslims i would presume, nothing wrong in that alone however when you take into account that this was a foreign nation and doing so was tantamount to disregarding any considerations the host nation might have this was a diplomatic faux pass at the very minimum.

Yup this and the Dilshan incident have made it a really bad tour for the Pakistanis (outside of the ground). Then there is the situation at home which made Rajapaksa cancel his visit to Pak, plus the recent news about ISI trying to use SL as a base of terror, not good at all.

You can pray to God from your hotel room also. Needless controversy.
Srilankans don't want a repeat of what happened to their cricket team in Pakistan.

These players are not allowed since the mosque is a highly sensitive area and providing security cover is difficult. But the Pakistani players defied the security norms given to them.

@jus- The Religion is never the problem the problem lies in the fact that Islam lends itself far too easily to warped interpretations that nefarious people from around the world have used ,are using and will continue to use for their own political purposes to attain power and wealth unless moderate, progressive Muslims stop them(which sadly they haven't really tried to do).

Some SriLankans would also be painfully reminded of the bombastic treatment their team got on a Pakistani tour few years back...

Of course i know it, u said "convert West Indies during WI tour" that is why i asked
that part is there in the article, go through it.

The Pakistan board finally introduced a clause in the players' contract that barred the players from discussing religion or politics on the field when reports began to emerge during the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies that most TJ players were bunking training sessions to go out and find new converts among the West Indians!
