NEW YORK: A Pakistan couple are suing American Airlines after they were handcuffed and escorted out of a plane based on a phone call with a hijacking threat, which turned out to be a hoax.

"The only reason police went to them is because their names were Maheen Ghani Taseer and Shahbaz Ali Taseer," Joel Siegal, their lawyer, was as quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

"They were singled out and treated as the most vile terrorists," he said.

The Daily Mail reported that Shahbaz is the son of Salman Taseer, the governor of Punjab province who was assassinated by an Islamic extremist in January.

The incident occurred on August 19 last year, and the case was transferred from the San Francisco Superior Court to the federal court this week.

The couple were vacationing in the US and were heading to New York to catch a flight back to Pakistan. They are currently in Pakistan.

This is the time Asians should united together, be it Pakistani, Indian, Chinese or even Japanese, to counter arrogant Americans.

When I was young and was travelling from Canada to USA, I had an "Indefinit USA Visa" and therefore I attached my passport when I renew. The immigration check point of USA was located at the airport in Canada and the officer who checked my visa was very impatient to find the valid visa. I turned the pages showing him where the visa was. AFter he stamped my passport, suddenly he said "Beat it". My English was not so good to understand this kind of English at that time and I did not know what to say and what to do. Then a South Asian (May be Indian, pakistani or others) challanged the officer and complained to his boss of his languange. The officer said sorry to me later and telling me he had hard time with his kid that morning. I was very impress of Asians helping each other.

I was growing up with heavy influnece by Hollywood movies and musics and consider Americans are fair, justice, rich and nice. That was not the case when I stayed there for some time.

One day, I drove along the main street in DC and I saw policemen arrest a Black lady for fast driving and tighted both her hands to the lamp pole in the broad day light. Many drivers could see the lady crying. If you were living under British law, you know that when the police arrest you, you are only a suspect and being invited to the police for further investigation. You are not a criminal, at least not yet. It is the court who has the power to judge whether you are gilty or not. In America, the police are the law enforcer, the judge and sometimes the executioner of punishment. Human rights, my foot.

It happens all the time. Even I have been randomly searched at airports; my name is not Arabic or Islamic at all but I look like an Arab (apparently) and have a full beard. That's enough to get you pulled over.

These are the kinds of posts that make me laugh.

When I was 9 years old in Malaysia me and another Indian classmate got pulled over riding pillion on a bicycle. the cop who pulled us over handcuffed both of us to the bicycle and made us push the bike all the way to the police station a mile away.
We were 9 year old kids !! All the way to the station he had his hand on his revolver, and i heard him say that he would have shot us if we tried run. He was a dumb old Malay idiot.....nothing more to it. When we got to the station, there was an Indian inspector who promptly released us and had a stern word with the policeman and told us that the other guy was a nut.

You cannot extrapolate things about a country based on a few personal experiences. If you lived in the US long enough and you know anything about the crime rate in predominantly black heighbourhoods - then you would probably understand why the cop did what he did. No cop is going to turn his back on any suspect(black or white) in a black neighbourhood, and especially the black areas of DC which is one of the worst.

Black folks in America get treated a lot worse by the police than other races - its true. But understand the reasons; its not so much about race. It is simply because the crime-rate among in black america is simply ridiculous. A full 20% to 30% of young black males between the ages of 18 and 35 are in prison at any given time. So the cops respond accordingly based on their survival instincts. Sometimes they overeact, but if you were a DC police officer - who knows what you would do.
As a police officer you are trained to be safe rather than sorry. Guns are a fact of life in the US, and the police respond acoordingly. Also the more belligerent you are, the worse it gets.

Likewise Pakistanis are being profiled especially in the Western countries because Pakistan has made a world-class reputation for itself as a cottage industry for nurturing psychopathic killers in the name of religion, jihad or whatever.
The entire Pakistani society has contributed to this current state of affairs and they fully deserve the outcome of their decisions.

If I was boarding a plane in the US with a group of middle-class looking educated Pakistanis and a bunch of white people - I would rather that the security people focus their limited resources on the Pakistanis than a bunch of white folks. Even if I myself come under increased scrutiny because of my brown skin - it still wouldnt bother me.

BTW: Pakistanis are under increased scrutiny everywhere in the world and even in Muslim countries.
Maybe when the whole world starts treating Pakistanis like crap when they try go go abroad - then these upper middle-class Pakistanis who run the country will finally get the message.

Indians were being racially abused even in the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's till now. What terrorists from pakistan blew bombs in the uk then ?

Right now it is only an excuse to racially discriminate and get away with it by citing the terrorist card. Blame the fucking bastard that is discriminating you rather than accepting it and justifying it by citing pakistan.

Should i go and beat up a tourist from belgium because some white cnut in australia beat up an Indian ?

There is racial discrimination based on color everywhere in the world including India.
There are thousands of gorgeous dark skinned Indian women who will never get a job in TV or in Bollywood or in the front desk of a major Indian company because Indians don't like dark-skinned women.

But by and large it's a thing of the past in the US, even though there are pockets of racist people everywhere.

Most Americans are very ignorant of the outside world and know little or nothing of other races. In that respect, you can say that there is little racism in the U.S., because unless you're really flamboyant most people won't pay any attention to you.

Most people who see me for the first time think I'm either Arab or Mexican. I've never met an American who has correctly identified me as an Indian.

Oh, and people always seem to confuse Sikhs with Muslims (most Americans, of course, probably don't know that there is a religion called 'Sikhism').

Of course you may laugh and I afraid you could be the only one laughing here. I have been in North America for over ten years and my above "personal" encounter is just a few example. The excuse you used has been used by every one in USA as well as politicians.

WTF......can the average Indian on the street tell the difference between a frenchman and a Belgian and A Danish guy and an English guy ?? Can the average Indian tell the difference between a Thai and a Vietnamese and a Filipino ??

I can because I have met enough of them and grew up in south-east Asia.
But why would I expect an Indian guy who has never left India to know the difference between a Vietnamese or Thai or Malay ?

In case it never occurred to you there is the Pacific on one side and the Atlantic on the other.
Most Americans have not left North America and even if they did they probably went to Europe.
Any American can tell between Canadians and Mexicans - their only 2 neighbors.

So why should Americans know who or what a Sikh is. Sikhs are a tiny minority even in India let alone the US.

Do middle-class Indians know who a Mormon is ? And why should they when they are a tiny group in the US.

Think before you post this utter nonsense !

They think we're all the same. The only types known to most of them are - black people, yellow people, brown people, red people and white people.
I remember vaguely that few days after 9/11 a sikh was assaulted (I don't know if killed or not) there because the dangerously ignorant assailant thought the man was a muslim (turban and beard) and hence a terrorist.
Sometimes people make your life so cheap that you could lose it on plain ignorance, that too of someone else.

Please use your brain before posting an analogy. Vietnamese, Filipinos, and Thais are all East Asians. Similarly French and Belgians are both West Europeans. Now what relationship do Indians and Mexicans have, two very different people who live on opposite sides of the planet? Indians and Mexicans have nothing in common besides some superficial physical characteristics, but these same superficial physical characteristics make them indistinguishable in the eyes of the average American.

Virendra said it better than I could. Most Americans identify people based on skin color and other superficial characteristics. For example, anyone with yellow skin and small eyes is stereotypically called an 'Asian'.

Now, most Indians are as ignorant as Americans when it comes to ethnic and cultural awareness, but India is a developing country where the majority of people are rural farm folks and a good number are illiterate. America, on the other hand, is supposed to be a developed country, and it is truly mind-boggling how a superpower and developed country has such an ignorant population. Other developed countries have a far more aware population, just look at Japan or Western Europe. The problem is that American primary and secondary education is completely devoid of meaningful human and cultural geography curriculum.

Add to that the limited communication ability of the general population and dearth of intellectualism. How many Americans can speak more than one language, compared to West Europeans, East Asians, or even Indians? It's very difficult to find a bilingual American; to find one you need to either go to a minority hotspot or troll a university campus.

This article appears to be very incomplete and short on details. It is impossible to determine if the actions were correct or not based on the little information that is supplied. If no action was taken after a threat was received, the news would be screaming about lack of response, especially if something happened. The big unanswered question is WHY were these people "targeted"? Did the phone call say that two people from Pakistan traveling as a married couple were actually planning action? That would be enough to focus on these two people.

The couple suing American Airlines will lose the case. It was law enforcement that took the couple off the plane. The airline crew was not involved with the passengers.

So according to your logic all the sophisticated Spaniards in Barcelona and Madrid who rattled away at 100 miles an hour in Spanish to me (when I was vacationing in Spain 2 years ago), before i stopped them and told them that I am not Spanish are also ignorant because they couldnt distinguish the fact that I was ethnic Indian.

Or maybe Civ, you also think some of the Indians guys I meet here in the US who look at me and say "I didnt think you were Indian" are equally dumb, right ??

People only learn languages if they need to. Europeans are almost always multi-lingual because they live very close to each other and need to learn other languages. They also have anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks of vacation a year mandated by government rules which allows then to take 1 or 2 months off every summer and travel if they have the means. Americans on the other are lucky if they get 3 weeks. If you live anywhere in Western Europe you can be in another country in a matter of a few hours drive.

Learning a foreign language in a country where you cannot use it is a pointless exercise. Unless you use it - you will never be fluent in any foreign language.
