From recently updated SIPRI trade register,
50 3M-54 Klub/SS-N-27 Anti-ship MI/SSM (2003) 2012 (10) For Kamorta (Project-28) frigates
10 3M-54 Klub missile delivered in 2012 out of 50 ordered in 2003.

Hope this clears any confusion abt whether P-28s have anti-ship capability or not.

our lack of a detailed acoustic library such as that the US has compiled over the decades and about the advanced tech needed to make the towed array sonars for ASW.
I presumed every Navy that has practiced or trained against platforms with sea-denial capability would have maintained this. How do you know about our lack of the same ?

Navy ship runs aground in Haldia (P28A Kamorta)
KOLKATA: The INS Kamorta, the first in a class of Indian Navy's ambitious Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Corvettes under Project-28, currently under construction at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) ran aground in the Hooghly near Geonkhali in East Midnapore on Friday during sea trials.

The INS Kamorta is nearing completion and was scheduled to be commissioned into the Navy by the end of this year. However, the failure of its engines and steering gear on Friday may result in a delay in its joining active service in the Navy, officers said.

"The ship was undergoing sea trials. As it was negotiating the bends and bars of the Hooghly, its engines seem to have failed. Its steering gear also got jammed and it moved away from the navigation channel and got grounded near the shore at Geonkhali. Two tugs of the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) were sent to the spot. There was nothing that could be done immediately as it was low tide. The tide will come in around 3am on Saturday after which the tugs will attempt to pull it free. The ship will then be towed back to GRSE for inspection and necessary repairs," a source revealed.

GRSE was awarded the contract to build four ASW corvettes for the Navy. The grounded vessel is the first in the series that is being called the Kamorta-class of ships. The other ships of this class are the INS Kadmatt, INS Kiltan and INS Kavaratti. The Kamorta would have been commissioned by now had the Navy not sought certain changes during the latter half of its construction.

"We aren't seeing much into this incident. Sea trials are meant to check out a ship's performance. Now, we will have to check the engines and the steering gear and make necessary changes," a source in GRSE said.

According to the Navy, extensive checks will be carried out once the ship returns to the yard at GRSE. A team of naval designers and engineers will ascertain what caused the engine failure and the steering gear to fail. Even if the schedule for commissioning gets delayed, there is no way the Navy will settle for a ship that is not 100% fit, an officer said. This is not the first time that a ship has got grounded at Geonkhali. Several years ago, the MV Harshvardhan, a passenger vessel from Kolkata to Port Blair also got grounded close to the spot after its steering gear jammed.

Electro-hydraulic steering gear usually is provided with a standby pumping unit for emergency use. It is composed of a pump and an electric motor, identical to those shown in figure 2-6. If the steering engine being employed has a casualty, the six-way pump transfer cock is adjusted to align the ram with the standby pumping unit; the power is turned on in the standby unit;and steering is transferred over to the standby unit.Emergency steering for destroyers also uses the trick wheel, shown in figure 2-6. If a steering signal failure occurs between the steering wheel on the bridge and the receiving unit, the helmsman standing watch in after steering operates the trick wheel and receives steering orders on the sound-powered telephone. Should a power failure occur in steering aft, the rudder is moved by disengaging the running electric motor, and hand-pumping oil to the ram by means of a hand crank. This procedure is very slow. The rudder turns only a small amount for every revolution of the crank.

Steering Engine Cutout

A safety device is installed on every steering engine. This safety device stops rudder movement when the rudder is brought against the stops. The limit most rudders can be turned is 35° to either side of center. Full rudder on most ships is 30° right or left; the extra 5° is applied only in emergencies. Unless you are ordered to do so, never put the rudder hard over. It is possible for the rudder to jam against the stops, causing you to make circles in the ocean.

Another reason why Steering might have failed.

Probe: Jammed steering linkage caused seaway lo-lo grounding

"The vessel experienced a loss of steering control when the articulated flap linkage arm, which was detached, became wedged in a position that prevented the movement of the rudder," Charbonneau wrote. "This caused the vessel to veer to port and run aground. The investigation has not determined when the linkage arm became detached. However, the TSB is aware that the rudder flap linkage axle nut and axle were missing."

In addition, Charbonneau noted that the investigation found that the articulated flap rudder had not been installed according to the manufacturer's specifications.

"In this instance, the axle nut was found to be locked using a tab welded between the linkage arm and the nut, as opposed to the designed arrangement that called for a welded locking plate between the nut and the axle," he wrote.

A warship normally has three conning positions and three steering positions-Bridge, Ops room and emergency conning position (ECP). ECP is positioned directly above the rudders and has separate hyd supply which is dependent on manual operation. Failure of engines and steering together is extremely rare. We can control the ship with differential power even if steering fails.

No Updates on this ship , Now almost 2013 Ending and This Ship is Expected to Commissioned Into Indian Navy by the End Of 2013 but engines and steering gear failure may result in a delay in commissioning the ship with the Indian Navy, which was initially scheduled for the end of 2013.

Why this is taking such long period

This is the news Published in 2011 about INS Kamorta which shows that ship was first expected in 2012..

However Now i am looking for the current status of this Project... Does any one have updated article on this ?
