But just look at this.. i don't know what to make of the quality of metal they're using.

It looks like some fibre material put on top of the metal sheet... may be to hide some bare metal look or it may be to reduce radar cross section... I am just assuming ...

Any metal can not be so crumbled look...

look closely, it looks like some lattice work below the sub surface, it may be to reduce radars reflection, or strengthen the frame. reducing radar reflection looks most plausible. and it is not new other navies have same surface on their ships too.

A stealthy ship shape can be achieved by constructing the hull and superstructure with a series of slightly protruding and retruding surfaces

yes the principle is similar to reflection of sun rays from a polished surface and not so from a rough or uneven surface

Honest question, why do the suface of the ships look like they are wrapped by the oil dabba sheets of metal? Are they using low quality material to save weight?
But just look at this.. i don't know what to make of the quality of metal they're using.

These are not sheet metal, but composite sheets on top of metal skeletal structure. Now metal and composite can never have similar expansion/contraction coefficient. So with ambient temperature change there is bound to be some buckling of the surface composite sheets.

they are metal and " more and more thinner Steel Plate used on the modern fighting vessel" is the root of such phenomenon...

we call it 'orange peel' effect in Shipbuilding Tech which is quite normal...

but Indian shipyard could do a little bit better on this with better tech and process...however it's not a big deal indeed...

KOLKATA: The INS Kadmatt. second in a series of four Kamorta-class Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Corvettes being built by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd was handed over to the Navy in Kolkata on Thursday. This advanced weapons platform will formally be inducted into the Navy's Eastern Fleet in the next few days. The first ship of this class, the INS Kamorta, which was commissioned into the Navy on August 23, 2014, at Visakhapatnam, is already engaged in active service with the Eastern Fleet.

GRSE chairman cum managing director Rear Admiral (retd) A K Verma, who calls the INS Kadmatta a 'super-sophisticated' frontline warship, handed it over to commanding officer Cdr Mahesh C Moudgil in the presence of Rear Admiral Narayan Prasad, chief staff officer (technical), Eastern Naval Command and other senior officers of the Navy and GRSE.

"It is a known fact that warships of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) are foraging close to Indian territorial waters in the Bay of Bengal region. PLAN submarines are detected on a routine basis close to the Ten Degree Channel that separates Andamans from the Nicobar group of islands. On an average there are four contacts every three months. This is an attempt at muscle flexing and probing India's defences. The Chinese know that we are watching but that is only half of the job done. With ships like the INS Kamorta and INS Kadmatt on the prowl, China would also know that we have the capability to destroy in case of any mischief. India is developing her own submarine fleet but they will play a more offensive than defensive role. A submarine is not meant to protect a country's maritime interests," a senior naval officer said.

The Andamans has a tri-services command but no naval fleet though this has been the demand from several senior officers and strategists. For the moment, ships like the INS Kamorta and INS Kadmatt can patrol the Andamans Sea from their base at Visakhapatnam.

GRSE is building four ASW Corvettes under the Navy's Project P-28. The basic design for these ships was developed by the Navy's Directorate of Naval Design and the details were filled in by the in-house design department of GRSE, The INS Kadmatt is 109 metres long with a displacement of 3,200 tonnes. The ship has a maximum speed of 25 Knots, with an endurance of over 3,400 nautical miles at a speed of 18 knots. She is designed to accommodate 17 officers and 106 sailors and is armed with torpedoes and rocket launchers apart from a main gun. She also has excellent stealth features, both above and below the sea surface.

"These ships have an extremely low radiated underwater noise signature making them difficult to be detected by sonar, whilst the 'X' form of the hull and superstructure gives the ship a low radar cross section. The successful construction of ASW corvettes with advanced stealth features bears testimony to GRSE's growing capabilities in building state-of-the-art naval combatants, comparable with the best in the world. The ship has also been built with over 90% indigenous content and this is a major step towards achieving self-reliance in state of the art warship design and construction." Rear Admiral (retd) Verma said.

^^ Is it just me? Or most similar western corvettes look more cleaner and stealthier with a flushed deck? Even the Turkish Ada class for example.

Visakhapatnam:
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R K Dhowan today said the Indian Navy will in future build all types of ships including those designed for warfare indigenously in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” initiative.

The Admiral was addressing a gathering here after the commissioning of the second indigenous stealth Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) corvette INS Kadmatt, built by M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) at Naval Dockyard here. “Commissioning of Kadmatt is a another milestone in self -reliance of Indian Navy,” he said adding “now Indian Navy is builders navy not buyers Navy.”

The Indian Navy has planned, in another 15 years, to strengthen science and technology and build warships indigenously in association with the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) and public sector shipyards and private companies, he said.

Speaking to mediamen, he said ‘Kadmatt’ will take part in international fleet review scheduled here from February 4-8. “Commissioning of Kadmatt will add a new dimension to the ASW capability of Indian Navy and in particular, the Eastern Fleet. The multifarious missions that can be undertaken by the ship truly reflect the enhanced multi-dimensional capability of the Indian Navy,” Dhowan said.

He said the unique feature of the ship is the high-level indigenisation incorporated in the production. About 90 per cent of the ship is indigenous. The ship has been indigenously designed by Indian Navy’s in-house organisation, Directorate of Naval Design and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, Kolkata. DND is Navy’s Design Organisation undertaking indigenous design of all surface combatants, he added.

‘Kadmatt’ is the latest indigenous ship after Shivalik class, Kolkata class and INS Kamorta wherein a plethora of weapons and sensors have been integrated to provide a ‘Common Operational Picture (COP)’.

The ship has many state-of-the-art equipment which include the rail-less helo traversing system and foldable hangar door for integral ASW helicopter which not only increases the strike capability of the ship but also enhances the detection capability manifold.

Dhowan said the ship’s weapons and sensors suite is predominantly indigenous and showcases the nation’s growing capability in this niche area.

The ship also boasts of an advanced 3D Medium Range Air/Surface Surveillance Radar developed by DRDO and produced
by Bharat Electronics.

The radar has an integrated IFF system co-mounted on a planar array antenna capable of tracking air/surface targets hundred of kilometers away and differentiates between friendly and enemy units.

The ship is also designed to carry an anti-submarine helicopter which not only increases the strike capability of the ship but also enhances the detection capability manifold, he said.

The ship has a potent strike capability with guns, close-in weapon system, heavy weight torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets.

Very soon the ship will also be fitted with vertically launched Surface to Air Missiles to neutralise enemy missiles, a release said. :clap2:

The ship will be manned by 13 officers and 180 sailors with Commander Mahesh Chandra Moudgil at the helm as her first Commanding Officer. It would be an integral part of the Eastern Fleet under the Eastern Naval Command. As an ASW corvette, the ship carries on the legacy of her predecessor INS Kadmatt (P78), which served the Indian Navy for 24 years from 23 December 1968 - 30 November 1992, Dhowan said.

Earlier, he inspected the guard of honour, took salute and also unveiled the ships’ plaque.

Flag Officer Commanding-in Chef, Eastern Naval Command Vice-Admiral Satish Soni said the Indian Navy has had a long association with the GRSE, which delivered the first warship INS Ajay in 1961.

Chairman and Managing Director of the GRSE Rear Admiral A K Verma (retired) said with the latest technology the shipyard had been constructing 95 warships and has already delivered 62 of them to the Indian Navy. Large number of naval officers including retired officers and other attended the function.
