Lucknow: The reported initiatives of the Hyderabad-based Asaduddin Owaisi to seek a foothold in Uttar Pradesh has alerted political outfits in the state as the move – if it goes ahead as planned – may cause a substantial shift in Muslim voters away from the so-called ‘secular’ parties.

According to reports in Lucknow, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi and his younger brother Akbaruddin Owaisi have established a line of contact with the community through a couple of local Muslim leaders in Lucknow and Azamgarh. This had first come to light in November 2014, and since then, the AIMIM has been running a membership drive.
Interestingly, it was initially reported that Asaduddin Owaisi, the MP from Hyderabad, wished to adopt the Muslim-dominated Sanjarpur village under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY). Before that, the senior Owaisi had given statements on the condition of Muslims and communal riots in Uttar Pradesh that were quite uncharitable towards the ruling Samajwadi Party.
It is learnt that Asauddin Owaisi had visited Lucknow during the month of Ramzan (corresponding to July) last year and met, among others, Maulana Saeed Athar Qasmi of the Tehrik Umar Society, an outfit ostensibly dedicated to welfare projects for the Muslims. Qasmi was reported entrusted with the task of strengthening the membership drive and Mohammad Shaukat Ali of Azamgarh was made the party convenor in the state.
Shaukat Ali also said that the membership drive has been continuing since 2014 across the state and will continue till June this year. After that Asaduddin Owaisi is expected to tour different districts and also organize a big programme to spell out his plan of action for the Muslim community.
A report said that besides Azamgarh, the AIMIM is likely to focus on Gorakhpur, Fatehpur, Unnao and Varanasi – areas represented by Yogi Adityanath, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Sakshi Maharaj, all so-called Hinduttva hardliners, and Narendra Modi. Apparently, the party would like to take advantage of the unease among the Muslims after polarizing statements given in the past by some leaders.
The reported move of AIMIM wishing to adopt Sanjarpur is seen as a ploy to polarize the Muslims of this region. Sanjarpur itself had bagged the headlines after revelation that the two persons gunned down in Delhi’s Batala House encounter in 2008 belonged to this village. Azamgarh also happens to be the Lok Sabha constituency of Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. The district has a population of roughly 47 lakh, with nearly 30 percent Muslims, according to local estimates.
According to the party’s website (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen) Asaduddin Owaisi has already given his choice to adopt Sanjarpur and is “awaiting approval from the government.” The party website also confirms that the AIMIM already has its units working in about 15 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Owaisi was also quoted as asking what was wrong in his choosing Azamgarh, and that he would go wherever opportunities existed for expansion of his base.
“By revealing his intention Owaisi has made it clear that he wishes to make inroads into Uttar Pradesh by playing the Muslim card,” says a SP leader. He adds that rather than a Muslims-only party, it is only a “secular” party that can improve the lot of the minority community. The Congress, too, believes that the Muslims need to become a part of the mainstream rather than float their own party. “Their interests have always been secure under the Congress,” said a UPCC spokesman.
Despite having a substantial Muslim population, Uttar Pradesh has not seen a Muslim community-oriented political outfit achieve electoral success in the last several decades. On the other hand, caste-oriented parties have done much better - Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party are examples, having pursued OBC and Dalit politics, respectively, to achieve dominance in the state. Muslims have preferred to support either of these after the Congress lost its appeal about two decades ago.
One major attempt to form a Muslim-driven party was the formation of Peace Party, started by Dr Mohammad Ayub Khan, a medical practitioner of eastern UP in February 2008. It contested the UP Assembly elections in 2012 and won four seats. Although it professed to espouse the cause of Dalits and Muslims, its approach was to offer an alternative to Muslims as ‘their’ party. It is learnt that several office bearers of some smaller parties have been contacted by AIMIM leaders to seek their support.
AIMIM has retained Hyderabad parliamentary seat since 1984 but its presence is limited in and around the Old City of Hyderabad. In June 2014, the Election Commission recognized AIMIM as a state party in Telangana. It contested 20 Assembly seats in Telangana and 15 in Seemandhra, and six Lok Sabha seats in undivided Andhra Pradesh, winning seven Assembly seats in Telangana besides the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat. Later, the party won two seats in Maharashtra assembly elections.

Owaisi's plans for UP Muslims: Should 'secular' parties hit the panic button? - Firstpost

    ----------------------------------------

MIM should contest election in Assam, WB, TN, Kerala & other muslim dominated areas. This will further polarize & BJP has good chances to win in UP.

So the formal process begins to divide India based on religion after 1947. :hmm:

Re: Owaisi's plans for UP Muslims: Should 'secular' parties hit the pa

    This is ominous. Very worrying.

MIM won a few seats in Maharashtra this time, and there were already shouts of "bhaag Hindu Owaisi aaya". Of course, they managed to win seats only because of the BJP-SS split. Wherever MIM won seats, the vote distribution was like BJP: 24000 votes, SS: 23000 votes, MIM: 32000 votes. But then, that's how our history has always been. Natives have been fighting amongst themselves even when the enemy is at the gates.

Now, what's going to happen is: the "secular parties" will initially try to be more green to retain their minority vote. But no matter how hard they try, they cannot be greener than Owaisi. So, they will quickly realize that the "minority vote" is a lost cause. Then, chameleons like Congress and SP will quickly try to become more saffron. Some of them will amalgamate, some of them will fall by the wayside.

At the end of the day however, we will see a polarization. And that could prove very dangerous.

Re: Owaisi's plans for UP Muslims: Should 'secular' parties hit the pa

I hope so, but that is a great concern nevertheless. The problem with our dumbass Hindu right-wing is, they are inspired by Islamic right-wing and fundamentalist Christian right-wing.

All these duffer Senas think its cool to beat up couples, vandalize public property, do moral policing, preach about "virtuous living", peek into people's bedrooms, and so on. They basically suffer from Victorian morality, which the Brits themselves gave up long back. If retarded assholes like Mutalik and his Ram Sena become too powerful, God help India.

Currently they are a minor presence, and are completely marginalized. That is why we don't get much trouble from them. Shiv Sena was much worse in the past - subsequently, association with the BJP has tempered them down a bit. Also, with change in guard - as the newer generation has taken control of the Shiv Sena, they have become slightly more liberal.

I want a Hindu RW which is economically right wing, and socially liberal, with modern values.

Re: Owaisi's plans for UP Muslims: Should 'secular' parties hit the pa

Never going to happen, since most right-wingers are inspired by religion in the first place. So their understanding of RW politics is based upon religious norms, outdated rules, etc., NOT upon economic principles.

Let me tell you something. 99% of the Modi supporters on Twitter etc. are agnostics. Borderline atheists, in many cases.

But of course, a Paki like yourself wouldn't understand this.

This time we will give them Gujarat instead of another Partition, and I have no problem saying that. There is no MK Gandhi this time to save them.

I am talking about leaders, not internet followers. A hindu rw leader will invariably be a Muthalik or a Togadia. The agnostic progressive types of rw hindus are most likely restricted to internet heroism.

Re: Owaisi's plans for UP Muslims: Should 'secular' parties hit the pa

I think its more of a politics then anything

Look how it has been carefully plain by congress

I mean owasis wants to fight UP and west bangal but not Delhi or up coming bihar election

Plank is too woo younger generation of muslims towards its own party so as to weaken SP and TMC but not app or RJD-JD(u)

Where congress thinks it can directly taken on BJP there is no owasis paln eg MP or CG or rajasthan

plan is to migrate votes to owasis party rather then other religion party.

Congree plan its looks like to create/pop-up new regional parties that are not awarse to congress and cannot run independently in long terms of its own eg sp and tmc can run in long term and be anti-congress as and when required while RJD/JD0u are pro congrees till modi is there .that why we have AAP in delhi and owasis in other parts

    What do you think ???

Re: Owaisi's plans for UP Muslims: Should 'secular' parties hit the pa

Your original statement was, "most right-wingers are inspired by religion in the first place". That is something that can only come from a Paki. And now you are changing your statement.

This isn't Pakistan, where some smelly Mullah can dictate action, with a horde of brain-dead followers willing to carry out whatever crap is asked of them. Togadia and Mutalik don't control right-wingers, right-wingers control them.

Mutalik was given a fitting response by the Hindus of the country in 2009. And this time, when BJP thought of inducting Mutalik, the right-wing followers of BJP gave the BJP such a good dose that they hurriedly rescinded their decision.

A Paki like you cannot understand that in India, the right-wing is actually very liberal. And they will dictate terms at the end of the day.

Re: Owaisi's plans for UP Muslims: Should 'secular' parties hit the pa

Whatever they try, I think Owaisi is a beast which cannot be controlled. Even if this is a grand plan by the Congress, they will not be able to contain the demon (MIM) once it becomes too powerful.

MIM and Owaisis are forever threatening Hindus and India, speaking of "3rd wave of radicalization", "2nd partition", "killing of 100 cr Hindus", etc. even now, when they have almost no power. Once they get 15-20 MP seats in India, that will be a decisive phase in India's history. Some hard decisions will have to be taken then.

Re: Owaisi's plans for UP Muslims: Should 'secular' parties hit the pa

Is that why partition happened ... a small minority could so easily tame a huge majority?:taunt:

Truth is, Hindus of all types - secular, communal, right wing, left wing - are after one thing only: power. They will do anything for power, sacrifice anything and anyone for power. Not much honor left. This is why Muslims always triumph over Hindus - because the former fight for something they believe in, whereas the latter only fight for power.

Even in the past, the worst of the Muslim rulers fought for what they believed in, whereas the hindu maharajas were fighting among themselves to acquire the throne. No wonder they lost repeatedly. The same mindset is present in the Hindu right wing - the likes of Togadia and Muthalik are more interested in beating up couples, do moral policing, than make India a developed nation.

Re: Owaisi's plans for UP Muslims: Should 'secular' parties hit the pa

Short to medium term, the likes of MIM will lead to consolidation of Hindu votes and thus help BJP.

In the long run, these are very dangerous trends and at some time a turning point will be reached where as you say hard decisions will be taken. The decisions taken will depend upon who is in power at that time and how much spine they show.

Yet another reason BJP needs to realize that merely winning elections is not enough, you need to alter the discourse in the society. In any sane society, such elements would be unacceptable and the media would call them out as such, unfortunately in India, the general discourse is at most time insane.
