NUCLEAR CONFRONTATION IN ASIA - Doval India must prepare itself for war on two fronts and build deterrence that ensures conflict is not an option for its adversaries. This statement was issued by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership summit on Saturday. One of the components of the system for containment is deployment of ballistic missiles of the “Agni†series, capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The Indian Army is planning to conduct trials of these missiles in the near future. The most formidable of them is the “Agni-5â€, capable of delivering 2 to 10 nuclear warheads over a distance of more than 5000 kilometers. Pakistan, on its part, as a deterrent to the aggressive designs of India, considers deployment of its nuclear arsenal. The recently published analytical report of the American Council on Foreign Relations states that Pakistan is stepping up its production of fissile material. And by 2020, it will be able to produce 200 additional nuclear warheads. The Pakistani army may use aircraft, ballistic and cruise missiles to carry nuclear weapons. Top brass of the military in India and Pakistan, by their actions, seem to be guided by the Roman ideology - “if you want peace - prepare for a warâ€. Indeed, an increase in the arsenals of weapons of mass destruction is determined by the logic of building relations between the two countries, explains Ivan Konovalov, director at the Center for Strategic Studies. “This is a logical path of progress for any country that possesses nuclear weapons. Especially, if it considers that the possessing of nuclear weapons serves as a guarantor for its existence. And in India and in Pakistan, this is exactly the way they think. Therefore, they are developing their nuclear weapons. But each of these countries has allies who are not interested in the uncontrolled growth of nuclear weapons. So, I think this whole situation will develop on the basis of consensus amongst all the concerned statesâ€. It is known that, for example, the United States are showing an increased attention to Pakistan's nuclear arsenal. Islamabad is afraid that the US may even undertake military operations to seize Pakistan's nuclear weapons. “This concern is based in part on reported contingency planning by the US military to prevent Pakistani nuclear weapons from falling into the hands of terroristsâ€, states the report prepared by the Council for Foreign Relations. But, it is the threat of terrorism that may become one of the foundations for a transition from confrontation to cooperation. Both in India and in Pakistan and also in China, which are considered in Delhi as one of the possible military enemies, the authorities are presently resolving similar tasks to counter terrorism and extremism. And here, extensive international cooperation is essential to replace the nuclear standoff between the powers. This also applies to the field of nuclear safety.
