NSG pulls out 900 commandos from VIP security for anti-terror
NEW DELHI: For the first time in two decades, the elite National Security Guard(NSG) has pulled out its commandos--numbering around 900--from guarding high risk VIPs, scaling down its security duties.

The NSG, according to sources, is now guarding the least number of protectees-- 15 VVIPs/VIPs--after a long time following the de-induction of a large number of commandos and redeploying them for operations for which they were meant for.

The commando force has shifted around 900 of its commandos rendering VIP security duties for training in specialist counter-terror operations as part of its original charter, an official said today. It has de-inducted these 'black cats' from one of its three VIP security units - the '11 Special Rangers Group (SRG)' - from its existing duties, the official said. NSG commandos were deployed for VIP security duties in 1992.

It was raised under an Act of the Parliament in 1984 as a federal contingency force. The formations of the NSG are segregated into five units, two Special Action Groups (SAGs) manned by officers and jawans from the Army and three SRGs comprising personnel from para-military forces.

Kunal, could you explain the implications? What happens to the VIP security gap now? Who takes their place?

Government has been in the process of looking into the number of VVIPs under the Z and Z plus category. The logical conclusion is that many of the so called VVIPs have had their security category downgraded and the job of securing them has fallen to the local cops.

I have never understood why people like MR.Mulayam Singh Yadava and Ms.Mayawati had been enjoying NSG Cover. There will undoubtedly many such figures all over India, who have had their NSG cover only for the so called importance it gives them.

I would like to see the list of 15 protectees still under NSG cover. Since PMs, presidents and ex-es are covered by SPG, who are these 15?

Its merely ego trips scaled down.

What threat most of them have in any case?

If Brig (Retd) Israr Rahim Khan, and 7 other Op Bluestar people could do without security cover all this while and they were actually vulnerable, then these people who have their own private goons as it is, should not feel worried.

Just ego lemon has been squeezed.

Time to squeeze it totally dry!

I know of a Chief of the Army who wangled a Z category for himself.

He was brought down to Y.

He ran from pillar to post to get his Z back since it allowed him a platoon of the Army (not commandos either), which he used to look after the premises!

NO terrorist would use a bullet on him since the bullet would cost more than his life!

All skulduggery with cockananny stories of danger!.

Even Ram Vilas Paswan and Lalu Prasad Yadav have NSG protection.

It was very bad to see our ELITE COMMANDOS carrying towel, water bottle and other personal things of robert vadera and running back of him. Is this what our ELITE COMMANDOS being used for, in the name of V.I.P. security they are making them as dogs for beggars who become rich by cheating people of INDIA......
Shame on the GoI to do such a idiortic thing. Security is meant for providing security and not for carrying personal things and running back of that V.I.P.......

I agree. Many of the leaders are not worthy of NSG cover.
Which enemy of the country would be fool to kill them and help us in turn?
There's debate on validity of regional hubs for NSG. What is that fuss about?
