No more good morning from now on, its Jai Hind for Indian Army - daily.bhaskar.com

New Delhi: In an unique initiative to "free" Indian Army from its British colonial influence, Chief of the Army Staff General Bikram Singh has asked all its officers to greet each other with a crisp "Jai Hind" instead of any other word. This means it is no more going to be "Good Morning" and "Good Afternoon" greet in the Indian Army, which was mainly a practice among the officers.

So far the jawans of certain units greet with a Jai Hind, while many use other forms of salutations according to their regiments. While that continues, Gen Bikram Singh has asked officers to use "Jai Hind" since this form of salutation is more secular and has a patriotic reverence attached to it. Similarly, all Army functions will now end with "Bharat Mata ki Jai."

The Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy have been using "Jai Hind" for a very long time but the Army was not using it uniformly. The salutation Jai Hind – or Victory to India – was first coined by Major Abid Hasan Safrani of Indian National Army (INA) and was immortalized by Subhash Chandra Bose as the battle cry during fight for independence. This battle cry is believed to have appealed to the freedom fighters and over a period of time became the most sought salutation in the country. Since Indian Army has its roots from East India Company many of the customs and traditions were inherited from the British, including forms of salutation based on different Regiments.

The Army chief has also asked the force to shed frills and five-star culture in unit activities including ceremonial function keeping in mind austerity measures. In order to bridge the gap between personnel, the chief has also asked for cutting down of officer-centric unit events and make them wider by involving persons of all ranks in the unit.

The chief has also asked to give equal opportunities to children of JCOs and Other Ranks to participate in self-development and social-recreational activities to obviate any perception of class divide. The COAS is also personally sensitizing all cadres on these issues.

Meanwhile, to sustain motivation levels of non-empanelled officers it has been decided to send them on foreign postings. "There is high level of frustration among officers who do not get promoted to higher ranks and feel stagnated. To keep them motivated a provision has been made that to give them foreign posting in order to keep them motivated," said an official in ministry of Defense.

Instead of concentration on artillery, armour and helicopter's our army chief is engaging in purely symbolic gestures just like our politicians. This move will not result in anything at all. It's the same like renaming Bombay as Mumbai. If the army Chief so much wants to free the army from British influence then he must ensure that no one uses English and speaks only Hindi. Moreover even the clothing of the army should be changed from British pants and shirts to Indian dhoti kurta. This way we would rid the army of all British influence and make it truly Indian again.

My thoughts exactly.........and what purposes are solved getting rid of British influence? Combat effectiveness is key here, not empty gestures. For example, we have 2nd largest standing army in the world. Does that make us better than US, Israel, Germany and UK? The Brits have only 4 Para Commando battalions, compared to the 8-10 fielded by us. Instead of asking how the Brits are able to operate in different theaters of war (Af-Pak, Malay, Sierra Leone, East Timor,Bosnia) with less nos, our COAS is bent on removing "Good Morning" with "Jai Hind". I dont care if our boys use "Good Morning" or "Jai Hind", as long as opponents cannot say "Good Night" to us. But, this messy situation , no one seems to understand and people playing silly turf battles and asserting their power with such rules.

These are the stupid cosmetic stuff that has no meaning.

Something as asinine as JJ Singh and his Friday combat dress direction.

How does these things make anyone more nationalistic or war frenzied?

It just shows bankruptcy of ideas to address real issues that plagues the Army.

If Good Morning is a British colonial stuff, I hope all Indians will stop it.

Why the Army alone?

What has Bika to say to that?

At what level does an officer feel frustrated and stagnated? As I remember a US Army LTC had to "get his ticket punched" by serving as a BN commander to make O-6.

Me, I have always regretted never making Sergeant-Major. :yuno:

Quite a few officer gets frustrated when he misses the promotion to the next rank.

That is after Lt Col, when it is by selection and not time scale.

There was a case of a Brigadier who shot himself when he did not make it to a Maj Gen and a Maj Gen who did not make it to a Lt Gen jumped from the top floor of the office building. and died!

Misplaced ambition and not ready to accept Fate.

I say Fate since promotion is no indicator of a man's professional prowess. It is supposed to be Objective, but like everything in life, it is Subjective. If th Boss likes you, it is all Systems Go.

This is more a PR for Gen Ji..

' JAI HIND ' is always said in official conducts, Evening or morning is something remain within private conversations not something common as article paints it ..

SECULAR !!!! Does this have to become a trend in the armed forces also ????

He should have just said it is patriotic and that would have set a good precedent !!!

If Biram Singh is so keen to be 'secular', why not disband all Regiments that are community or religion based?

That would be real secular.

Does he have the guts to do so?

Political clot!

Stupid man with stupid ideas.

because if institutions like army or even universities is still under british colonial influence ,

how to expect any civilian to be free from it ,

one needs to create good example which our ' colonial mind ' set population clearly needed.

what a army chief alone could do on development of army , if govt. like corrupt congress delaying indigenous efforts of modernization of army to make more reasons for more foreign tenders and chances to do more corruption.

sir,what was your last official rank in the U.S. Army(sorry for asking a personal question)?
btw sir, is there any provision for a recruit joining the U.S. Army as a Private First Class to get promoted to the Officer's Training Course if he/she tops the basic course(i saw this concept in an American military soap called "the Unit" which was based on the U.S.Rangers)?

So, Good Morning is British colonial repression?

Then why are we writing in English?

Let us convert to regional languages (many would refuse Hindi as a link language), wear dhotis and kurtas and instead of rifle use ancient weapons or go backwards more into history, use stones!

That would be wresting ourselves of all foreign influences.

But, the question still is - what is the original culture?

Maybe being ape men?!

One must be practical, contemporary and sensible.

Secular?

What stops old Bikram to disband his own Regt - Sikh LI and make it a secular Regt with all and sundry.

After all, charity begins at home!

What ho?

He cannot even salute properly as they do in the Army!

That looks like a Naval salute that has gone off to sleep!
I didnt know Army, Navy and AF have different kind of salutes till now !

Why is that so ? Any specific reason for that ?

I retired as a Master Sergeant (E-8). Any enlisted person can apply to Officer Candidate School and select a branch in which to serve upon completion. Enlisted persons with certain qualifications can also apply to the US Military Academy at West Point.

Army : When a soldier salutes his superiors, his right hand goes up on his forehead with his palm showing. What this means is that he has no weapon hidden up anywhere and that his intentions are good.

====================
====================

Air-Force : Palms are shown partially and way it is done resembles plane taking off, Another is a casual salute used by pilots while flying so it stuck as this way..

====================
====================

Navy : The Naval salute differs in that the palm of the hand faces down towards the shoulder. This dates back to the days of sailing ships, when tar and pitch were used to seal the timber from seawater. hence a dirty palm, decreed the sailors of the fleet would salute palm down, palm rotated 90 degrees of a typical salute with the palm now pointing towards the member's shoulder.

====================

This is how it is different, All Major Armies descended from British Army have these tradition going ..
