Sanjarpur returns to haunt Digvijay
Manjari Mishra, TNN Dec 11, 2010, 12.36am IST .
LUCKNOW: Emerging links between Tuesday's Varanasi blast and Sanjarpur town in Azamgarh district may prove embarrassing for Digvijay Singh, Congress general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh.
Singh had sometime back visited the small UP town that has gained infamy as a terror nursery. A number of Sanjarpur youngsters have been linked to recent terror incidents like the Delhi serial blasts.
The senior Congress leader had striven to build bridges with these families who protest the stigma and deny that their children have any terror links. Singh's detractors within Congress say the Sanjarpur trip would rebound on him and hand the opposition a handle to beat him with. In fact, BJP has been quick to seize the opportunity and has raised the pitch.
On Friday, BJP vice-president Vinay Katiyar created a flutter in Faizabad when he publicly requested Mayawati to order a probe into Singh's "misadventure'' and take stern action. Within hours, party state president Surya Pratap Shahi spoke on the same lines in Kasganj. Stumped, Congress hasn't yet reacted to the charges, wild as they may be.
In February last year, Singh had gone to the town which had alleged links 13 young suspects of the 2008 Delhi blasts to connect with the affected families. He had mooted a special court be set up to expedite justice.
Seeing an opportunity to embarrass Congress, Katiyar launched into an offensive and claimed that Singh had visited the house of Dr Mohammad Shahnawaz, a key accused in the Varanasi blast.
"I demand that Mayawati order an investigation into Singh's motive and the content of the conversation,'' Katiyar said, even as Shahi expressed satisfaction over the discovery that "those raising fingers on saffron terror have muddied hands''.
