BETTIAH: Team Anna's itch to enforce its moral code on politicians suffered a setback on Thursday, when Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said it should not stretch its role too far and get judgemental about the Lokayukta bill framed by his state.

"I don't need a certificate from anybody. I am in direct contact with the people of my state," Kumar said. In other words, he has a better understanding of what people expect from the government.

The strong attack on Team Anna came a day after the Kaushambi-based Arvind Kejriwal took upon himself the task of assessing the Lokayukta bill's draft prepared by the Bihar government. Kejriwal, who donned the role of the 'final authority' on such exercises, said it resembled the document prepared by the Congress-run central government.

In yet another display of an extravagant role, Kejriwal said the bill was not acceptable to Team Anna. Alivid Kumar said the critics of his bill should not cross their limits. "Anna had come to me seeking my support for his agitation.

I have given word to my people and I am in direct contact with them. After Independence, it's my government which has put in place so many initiatives and measures to curb corruption," Kumar said. The Bihar chief minister's statements do not augur well for Hazare and his group, as it signals unease among leaders over the activists attempts to dictate terms of discourse on the corruption issue.

The Bihar government had recently passed a services law and another legislation empowering the administration to confiscate properties of corrupt bureaucrats. The first such seizure was made recently and a house in Patna belonging to a senior IAS official was converted into a school.

Given this backdrop, Kumar's assertions were aimed at telling Team Anna that he did not need any dictation from the activist crowd. Kumar's attack is certain to embolden Congress to up the ante further against its tormentors.

The fear of public backlash was prompting many of its leaders to put up with Team Anna's incessant attack. Only Digvijaya Singh has been running a noholds-barred campaign against Hazare and his supporters.
