May be it is not 100% sucessful, but it is also matter of fact that it went 30% of intended distance before it w
as made to self destruct.
So all is not lost. It is not that midway it ditch flight control computer, and without navigation it moved further.
After identifying problem they will test it again.

Can't agree more, and as per reports next flight is just after couple of months, and i am sure our hard working scientists will rectify the problems(whatever they may be) and come with more improved missile.:)

No it's a two stage launch. Ejection and then boost.
:dude: even the Brahmos have a two stage launch the solid rocket propellant and the ramjet engine but it is ejected using cold launch as opposed to the current arrangement of Nirbhay it seems.

Propulsion failure, Guidance failure, Mechanical Failure or just snapping of wiring, the fact remains that this terrain hugging missile will see couple dozen test firings before induction. So whatever went wrong will be rectified within the expected time.... A failure now means less surprised later.

Congratulation to DRDO for successful testing of launcher and all the systems which can go anywhere between 350 to 500 Km....

It will be interesting to see whether the Nirbhay can be launched via Kilo class torpedo tubes. Also if it can be carried by the MKI. All this apart from being launched from surface ships, TATA 12X12 trucks and the vertical launch tubes of the nuke submarines.

This will give the armed forces a versatile strike capability complementing the supersonic but shorter ranged Brahmos(that will use the same infrastructure as the Nirbhay).

by looking at the current launcher the missile seems like a hot launch as opposed to that of BrahMos
Yes like Prahaar it also has enclosed rail launcher instead of canisters with hot gas ejectors like seen on K-15.

Its over weight missile like Agni, its range is also short
Thats just silly, its range remains classified, they claim 700-1000km but if you know anything about all Indian missiles, you will know ranges are always understated. In reality its range will be around 1000-1500 km depending on flight profile. Furthermore, it is meant to have the ability to loiter, thus extra fuel needed to stick around a contested zone while waiting to pounce on target. Its weight is claimed to be around 1000 to 1200kg, which is actually very good considering the missile should be able to loiter and is possibly one of the longest range cruise missiles that can be deployed by a pure fighter like the MKI.

No issues with the fact that it was a part success. Still I would go for step by step testing.

nirbhay a failure

The first test-firing of India's indigenously developed medium range sub-sonic cruise missile 'Nirbhay' failed to hit the target.

The maiden launch developmental trial of the sophisticated missile was carried out from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, about 15 km from Balasore, in the presence of top defence scientists and senior officials.

"The missile blasted off from a mobile launcher positioned in the launch pad - 3 of the ITR at about 11.54am," defence sources said.

The surface-to-surface missile has the capability of being launched from land, sea and air, they said, adding Nirbhay has good loitering capability, good control and guidance, high degree of accuracy in terms of impact and very good stealth features.

Nirbhay was developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratory based in Bangalore.

India has the technology of super-sonic missile like BrahMos which is jointly developed by India and Russia. BrahMos has the striking range of 290 km.

In the early morning, the Balasore district administration temporarily shifted 453 families, comprising 2,586 adult members and 698 children, residing within two km radius of the Launch pad-3 at the ITR to nearby shelter places during the test launch of the missile as a safety measures, said a district revenue officer here.

For this temporary shift of the families they were compensated, he said.

if it is a copy/paste tech like babur, then it would have suceeded :)

Unfortunately we wanted to use our own brain

FYI :-

After identifying problem they will test it again.
Our scientists destroyed it unlike Paki missile which fell over its village ditching flight control computer

This was a failure in trajctory and it is reported as a range failure?? Well i am sure there are
other seekers and guidance systems that will be tested with the 32 different warheads.
