Russia to arm Cameroonian military in fight against Boko Haram

The Russian Government is reportedly planning to supply modern and sophisticated weaponry to the Cameroonian Army to help it to better fight the Nigeria-based terrorist group Boko Haram.

Russian Ambassador to Cameroon Nikolay Ratsiborinskiy was quoted by The Cubic Lane as saying on national radio that the country will deliver 'weapons and [the] latest generation of the most sophisticated systems'.
The equipment will include 'artillery guns, air protection, anti-aircraft missiles and cannons, armoured trucks and other equipment and armaments', Ratsiborinskiy added.
Ratsiborinskiy also said to AllAfrica: "We may expect the arrival of the most modern and state-of-the-art Russian equipment and arms for Cameroonian Armed Forces, as well as training of army officers in Russia."

The announcement comes as Boko Haram insurgents abducted dozens of people, many of them children, from two villages in north Cameroon on 18 January.

The assault on the Maki and Mada villages in the Tourou district near Mokolo city left three people dead, and follows Chad's decision to deploy a contingent of soldiers to northern Cameroon to combat Boko Haram in Cameroon and Nigeria.

Cameroon Far North Region governor Mijiyawa Bakar was quoted by CNN as saying that the first contingent of Chadian soldiers arrived in a convoy of more than 400 vehicles, with a second wave of soldiers expected to arrive shortly.

Cameroon Defence Ministry spokesperson colonel Didier Badjeck said the Chadian soldiers arrived with tanks, armoured vehicles and other military equipment.

Cameroon recently claimed that the terrorist group attacked a military base in Kolofata in the far north, leaving 143 'terrorists' and one Cameroonian soldier dead.

Having seized control of several towns and villages in north-east Nigeria, Boko Haram has begun expanding its operational zone into some of the country's neighbours.

Germany has also provided more than 100 military vehicles to Cameroon, The Cubic Lane reported.

Boko Haram attacks key Nigerian city of Maiduguri

Nigerian Islamist Boko Haram fighters have attacked the strategically important north-eastern city of Maiduguri, with dozens reported dead.

Earlier on Sunday they captured the north-eastern town of Monguno.

The BBC's Will Ross in Lagos says that with the insurgents gaining ground, Maiduguri is increasingly at risk.

People in Maiduguri woke up to the sound of explosions and heavy gunfire as Boko Haram launched a pre-dawn attack on this strategic city.

Ground troops, air strikes and local vigilantes managed to stop the jihadists from penetrating the city. Much of the fighting was around a barracks.

In a separate attack the town of Monguno was captured - the latest to be seized by the group.

With the insurgents gaining more and more territory Maiduguri is increasingly vulnerable. It is home to tens of thousands of people who have fled their homes because of the conflict.

Re: At least 120 dead in Nigeria mosque attack

200lb virgins??
It depends on how many lb's of explosive you have when you blow up, now divide it by the number of people you kill, multiplied by how many times the person said Allahu akbar before blowing.

Chad attacks Boko Haram in Nigeria as African Union chief presses for troops

A Chadian warplane and ground troops drove Boko Haram fighters from a Nigerian border town, leaving it strewn with the bodies of the Islamic extremists, witnesses said Friday. The African Union moved to send ground forces to Nigeria and the United States said it would assist.

Thursday's fighting marked the first such action by foreign troops on Nigerian soil to fight the Islamic extremists.

The African Union chairwoman, at an AU summit in Ethiopia, called for deployment of 7,500 African troops to fight the spreading Islamic uprising by Nigeria's home-grown extremists. A senior U.S. official told reporters that the United States government will take a role in the fight against Boko Haram.

"We are prepared to provide technical support, training and equipment to fight the Boko Haram group. The group's activity in the region has clearly affected our attention in Africa away from development," said Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa.

Abari Modu said he witnessed the Chadian offensive on Malumfatori village in Nigeria's Borno state.

"We saw the fighter jet when it started shelling and bombarding the insurgents who were lodging mostly inside the local government secretariat and the district head's palace," he told Associated Press.

He said the bodies of many Boko Haram fighters were still in the town Friday morning. Modu spoke by telephone after crossing the border from a Chadian village where he had sought refuge after Boko Haram seized Malumfatori at the end of October.

He said the Chadian jet had pursued fleeing fighters to the border, and that the bombardment was co-ordinated with Chadian ground troops, offering the fighters no escape.

A Nigerian military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press, confirmed the account. There was no immediate official word from Nigerian authorities about the Chadian offensive.

Boko Haram's five-year Islamic uprising has killed about 10,000 people in the last year and displaced 1 million people.''

200 Boko Haram fighters, 9 Chadian soldiers 'killed in clashes

Clashes between Chadian troops and Boko Haram fighters during a raid in neighbouring Nigeria have killed 200 Islamists and nine soldiers, Chad's military said Wednesday.

"We regret nine dead and 21 wounded. On the enemy side: more than 200 deaths...," a statement said in reference to clashes on Tuesday, adding that the toll could rise since clean-up operations in the Nigerian town of Gamboru were continuing

BBC News - Boko Haram crisis: Is the Nigerian army failing?
The campaign group Amnesty International has previously said it has seen "gruesome footage" from its fight against Boko Haram, including alleged members of the military slitting the throats of detainees.
The dumbasses of the so called modern society are the reason terror is winning everywhere. They fail to sway any significant power and damages weaker ones.

Boko Haram abducts 8 Cameroon girls, kills 7 other hostages

Residents in northern Cameroon say Boko Haram extremists have killed seven hostages and abducted eight young girls who were aboard a public transport bus hijacked by the militants over the weekend.

Chetima Ahmidou told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the bodies of seven victims had been dumped near Cameroon's border with Nigeria. Ahmidou's brother was the driver of the bus and was among those slain.

Ahmidou said that eight girls between the ages of 11 and 14 were taken back to Nigeria by the Islamic extremists. Boko Haram abducted more than 200 schoolgirls last year from Chibok an act which drew international condemnation.

Boko Haram has intensified its attacks in Cameroon and Niger over the past week after both countries agreed to provide soldiers to a multinational military force.

Members of the Canadian Forces are in a Niger town that was attacked by Islamist extremist group Boko Haram on Monday, CTV News has learned.

Canadian Special Operations Forces are in the town of Diffa, where they are participating in a military exercise, CTV's Mercedes Stephenson reported late Monday night.

They are unharmed and believed to be safe.

Boko Haram is believed to be responsible for a car bomb that exploded in Diffa at around 3 p.m. Monday. There was no immediate death toll for the attack, which took place near a customs office.

The Canadian Forces members are in Diffa as a part of Exercise Flintlock, an annual military exercise designed to help African militaries co-operate and build the capacity to fight terrorism.

21 dead in two Boko Haram attacks in NE Nigeria: community leader, witness

At least 21 people were killed in two separate Boko Haram attacks on villages near the key city of Maiduguri in northeast Nigeria, a community leader and a witness said on Friday, AFP reported.
"They (Boko Haram) killed 12 people in Akida village and nine others in Mbuta village during a raid," said community leader Mustapha Abbagini.
A witness to the attack in Mbuta gave the same death toll while both said that the insurgents destroyed shops and homes in the raids, which happened on Thursday morning.

Boko Haram invades Nigerian city, warns against voting

Boko Haram invaded the restive northeastern Nigerian city of Gombe on Saturday and warned residents against voting in next month's elections as the Islamists defied regional force aiming to pursue them.

Residents said the attackers later left the city and stormed another area some 40 kilometres (25 miles) away, where they burned homes.

The violence prompted the state governor to impose an around-the-clock curfew.

Witnesses said the extremists stormed the city at around 9:00 am (0800 GMT) and advanced without any resistance from the security forces. It was unclear if there were casualties.

A Nigerian fighter jet encircled the city but did not appear to attack the insurgents, said witness Kabiru Na-Gwandu, adding that he had received a call from friends outside of Gombe warning him the gunmen were on their way.

"I evacuated my house along with my family before they arrived in the city and I'm happy that I did because from information I'm receiving they have taken over the military barracks," he said.

The Boko Haram fighters called on residents to boycott elections which had originally been planned to take place on Saturday before they were postponed until March 28.
