This is how future freighters might look. You can read about the characteristics of these heavy lifters in the future.

A noob question...

We have inducted C-17s which can carry 1 MBT at a time. Why are not heavy freight carriers used instead which can carry 2-3 MBTs at a time?

  • Antonov An-124
  • Antonov An-225
  • Boeing 747-400ERF

Because freighters that are more than the size of C17s are so heavy that they cannot be used for tactical ops or on short/rugged runways, or in high altitude improvised airstrips should there be a need for rapid deployment of assets.

Yes, C-17 can take off and land in 2.5km runway, where as the ones i mentioned require 3.2km runway with MTOW.

But 700m extra airstrip vs ability to carry 3 times more freight (2 times in high altitude)... shouldn't it be worth looking into?

3 MBT per airlifter if your moving spearhead armored division to fight wars in Europe (where there numerous airfields that can take on enormous aircrafts) during the Cold War. But in the battlefield of the 21st century where flexibility is the rule, especially I think in the most immediate potential flashpoints of India, the rugged, heavy-lifting and versatile C-17 is the best freighter around. If it is that bad really to transport 3 MBTs then just send in 3 C-17s. The C-17s can even send MBTs to some of the highest airfields in India... But then again in those areas you don't need MBTs, you need lighter tanks or IFVs to do the fighting for you, vehciles that the C-17 can carry in several units with ease.
