Probe ordered into Chhattarpur sisters' suicide
PTI, May 27, 2010, 06.18pm IST

BHOPAL: An inquiry has been ordered into the alleged suicide of two sisters in Chhattarpur district of Madhya Pradesh amid allegations that two police constables had taken nude photographs of one of them by force.

"Two Additional DGPs R C Arora and K N Tiwari will hold an inquiry and submit report to the state government," DGP S K Raut told PTI.

He said the two constables, who allegedly took snaps after asking them to disrobe themselves, have been booked. While Kanhaiyalal Tiwari was arrested, efforts were on to nab Arvind Pal, Raut said.

Dipanjali, 21 and her sister Pushpanjali, 16, allegedly consumed some poisonous substance after two other constables Praveen and Ashok yesterday came to their house and threatened them to withdraw cases against Tiwari and Pal.

Dipanjali died in Chhatarpur yesterday while her sibling succumbed today at a hospital in Jhansi.

The elder sister had complained to Chattarpur SP P S Bisht that the two constables recently misbehaved with her and took her objectionable photographs.

Man beats up Manipuri girl in Delhi

A 20-year-old girl, who hails from Manipur, was severely beaten by a man at Murnika, in south Delhi on Thursday evening. The girl suffered injuries on her face and eyes.

The girl went for a walk in a nearby park when a man stood in her way and allegedly tried to molest her. When she tried to retaliate, the man punched her on face, which caused her the injuries.

The girl then called up North East Support Centre & Helpline for help, a human rights group, who contacted the Vasant Vihar police station. After initial reluctance, the police finally swung into action and reached the spot, the press release issued by the NESC&H said.

What seems more atrocious is the fact that the victim and the accused were taken in the same police van to the station, a TV report claimed.

Meanwhile, NESC&H also accused of racial discrimination by the Delhi police officials when they tried to file the complaint, the statement said.

The attack comes in the wake of an alleged murder of a Naga girl in south Delhi by an Indian Institute of Technology scholar in October 2009.

Mood right, Mamata now hopes for results

Express news service

Kolkata Despite sporadic clashes between Trinamool Congress and CPM workers, the civic polls in West Bengal on Sunday were by and large peaceful with 65 per cent voter turnout. The election, which is being seen as a semi-final before the 2011 state Assembly polls, was held in 81 civic bodies and in the 141-ward Kolkata Municipal Corporation, involving 85 lakh voters.

All the three major players — Left, Trinamool and Congress — have a lot at stake in today's polls. For Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, a good showing by the Left can be projected as their revival after the debacle in the Lok Sabha election.

For Mamata Banerjee, who has campaigned vigorously for the polls, the results are expected to give enough indications on whether she will ride to power in the Assembly polls due next May. An important factor is that the Trinamool has parted ways with the Congress for the civic polls and may choose to go it alone in the Assembly elections if the results are in its favour.

On Sunday evening, the Trinamool seemed at ease. Union Minister Mukul Roy, a close aide of Mamata, said, "Voting was by and large peaceful. In Jadavpur, we have asked for repolling in two wards where CPM cadres had resorted to violence."

In Kolkata Municipal Corporation polls, the Congress, which had fielded its candidates in 115 of the 141 wards, seemed out of fight except in 20-25 seats in its strongholds in north and central Kolkata. Its offices

in many places wore a deserted look.

In ward numbers 100-113, which fall in Jadavpur, the Assembly constituency of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the CPM and Trinamool were in a direct fight.

There was speculation that the Maoist carnage on railway track might have an impact on the civic election. But TMC leader Partho Chatterjee said: "The incident will go against the ruling party."

CPM leader Shyamal Chakraborty was not sure about their prospect. "We should not compare the poll results of previous elections," he said.

At Hatibagan, Kolkata, where Trinamool Congress strongman Atin Ghosh was contesting, Congress offices were almost empty. In North Kolkata's Beleghata Shanti Sangha School stood the lone umbrella bearing the Congress hand symbol, but none of the supporters were there.

Traditionally, wards 1 to 47 have been the support bases for the CPM and the Congress. But since former state Congress president Somen Mitra left the party and joined the TMC, prospects of the Congress have gone down.

The wards 48 to 97 and 114 to 137 are dominated by Trinamool because most of the wards fall under Mamata's Lok Sabha constituency.

Trinamool is already in an advantageous position in Salt Lake. This is because out of the 25 seats in the municipalities, the Congress had fielded candidates in only 14 seats, leaving 11 for direct fight between the TMC and the CPM.

CPM sources said that a section of Congress voters did not turn up for voting, which might prove to be an advantage for Mamata.

In Congress stronghold of Murshidabad there was 85 per cent polling in the six municipalities. The Congress is expected to do well here.

Mamata may take post, but CPM not routed: Exit polls
31 May 2010, 0325 hrs IST,ET Bureau

KOLKATA: The 2010 West Bengal Municipal Cup has been fought for. Favourite Trinamool Congress, with Mamata Banerjee up, was lengths ahead of the field in a largely three-horse race, where the Congress brought up the rear quite strongly and the CPM seemed to have recovered substantial turf round the bend, courtesy the snapping of pre-poll seat adjustment between Congress and Trinamool.

Standout feature of the day, however, wasn't the race as much as the turnout. Average polling percentage was an incredible 75%, which showed the kind of interest the electorate had taken in exercising the franchise. It was also an indication of the mass participation expected to happen in the West Bengal Assembly Derby 2011. In Kolkata, polling for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) varied from 65-70% while at Salt Lake, for the municipal board there, polling was 69%.

CPM knows it has lost KMC and the Salt Lake Municipality. Out of the 79 other municipalities being fought for throughout the state, Alimuddin Street thinks it will be a cause for great hope, if even 30-35 of these municipalities are won by the Left Front. "This election, we have been benchmarking against the 2009 Lok Sabha poll results and if we are able to get 30 to 35 municipalities out of the balance 79, we would know that our tireless efforts to woo back the electorate is paying dividends," an Alimuddin Street source said. A tally of 30-35 falls far short of the 54 municipalities that the Front won in the last municipal polls in 2005, but considering the circumstances, even this would be a positive indicator for the Reds, should it happen.

Exit polls, incidentally, also showed the possibility of the Left Front getting 54 wards against Trinamool's 78, Congress's 7 and BJP's 2 at KMC while at Salt Lake the prediction was 11 wards for the Left Front against 14 of Trinamool. If that turns out to be true, the Left may not indeed have fared as badly as it was widely expected to be. On that basis, if the Left Front manages the number Alimuddin Street is fervently hoping for, it will perhaps give CPM and its allies a ray of hope for 2011.

Clashes, firing mar Bengal civic election
Kolkata, May 30, DHNS:

Amid sporadic clashes, police firing and lathicharge, and largescale malfunctioning of electronic voting machines, West Bengal on Sunday witnessed polling for 81 civic boards and the prestigious Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

While the police firing left one injured who was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, at least 20 others including two policemen and as many women suffered injuries following police baton charge at five places in the city and elsewhere in the districts.
The high-voltage polling began at 7 am and ended at 3 pm, with the opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) blaming the state election machinery for Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) tampering and malfunctioning. All eyes are also on the 141-ward Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) which the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC has vowed to wrest from the Left.

However, contrary to the previous civic polls that saw at least 25 deaths due to violence on a single day, the present edition of civic elections was free of incidents of killing. Nonetheless, there were clashes between CPM and TMC activists, specially in Maldah, Burdwan and Hoogly districts.

According to reports, EMVs in a number of wards at Bandel, Arambagh and Kolkata failed to function, leading to suspension of the polling for several hours.

At Paluli, in the city's southern fringe, a police constable deputed from Tripura on poll duty had opened fire to prevent a clash, injuring one person.

In Burdwan, nine persons, including two policemen and a TMC candidate, were injured when TMC and CPM activists clashed in Jamuria municipality.

The two sides, police said clashed while voting was on at Sripur. When police reached the spot, stones were thrown at them and two of their jeeps damaged. Several bombs were also hurled during the clash.

Sripur police station officer-in-charge Saikat Ray, another policeman, Trinamool candidate Sadhan Chandra Ray and six villagers were injured in the incident. The arsonists dispersed after police resorted to lathicharge and six people were detained.

In the city, clashes were reported from four wards following which Rapid Action Force (RAF) had to be deployed. Repolling has been ordered in three wards on June 1. Incidents of bomb throwing were reported from Hoogly, Howrah and Maldah districts and reinforcements were rushed to restore the law and order.
